Upgrading monitor suggestions

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking now of getting a larger monitor (from my 32 inch curved) to something like a 4K screen...

Just wondering form those who use such, will a larger screen on the desktop be too big or will it make the immersion so to speak, a little more life like?

Happy to hear any suggestions guys

Thanks

Doug

The nice thing about a larger screen (in the 55" range) is you can set views and zoom to get scenery and (to an extent) instruments to appear in real-world size, which increases immersion.

Thanks for that input...i was hoping that would be the case...

Do you find that sitting close to the screen you can see the pixels? Or is the fact that it is 4K negate that fear?

Cheers

My viewing distance on my 58" screen is about 33.5", giving my a horizontal FOV of around 74 degress which is 52 pixels per degree at 4K. I can't really discern individual pixels, but the best eagle eyes can apparently see up to 57 ppd.

@vonduck, it looks like you have a 2560*1440 32” monitor at present being fed by a 4090.

That graphics card is easily capable of supporting 4K. Regarding size it’s a trade off between sharpness and immersion. The larger the screen the greater the immersion but having the same number of pixels spread out over a larger area means a less sharp image.

Hence why so many 4K monitors top out at 32”. However, Dell do a 43” which looks an excellent option giving you a far bigger display but still ensuring decent sharpness.

About 7 years ago I upgraded to a Dell Ultrasharp 34" curved, 34xx x 14xx resolution. price at the time was approx $1500 Cdn but a weekend sale allowed me to buy for $850. Knock on wood it is still bright, clear, no dead pixels, still very pleased with it. it was not cheap at the time especially for a new retiree but that said sometimes springing for quality is less expensive in the long run.

@vonduck the font you use in your signature is extremely difficult to read. I struggled to see what components you have.

It would help many if you could change it to something easier on the eye. 👍

Honestly, if you are looking to substantially boost the "immersion factor" in MSFS, I would forget about larger 4K monitors and get yourself a quality VR headset.  Some people refuse to or can't fly in VR for various reasons, but I believe 95% of people who give VR a chance refuse to ever fly in "pancake mode" again.  I absolutely fall into that category.  Sorry, I do understand my response is off topic from what you specifically asked...
