Perhaps the great English fantasy writer before Tolkien was Mervyn Peake. He also wrote poetry.

The other night I watched an old WW2 movie about the 'buzz bombs' and later the V2 rockets.  They were terror weapons.

The interesting thing about the 'buzz bombs' is they had pulse jet engines (which emitted the buzz sound).  I can't think of anywhere else pulse jets were ever used.

So I went and googled around about the sound of the buzz bombs. When Brits inside buildings heard the buzz they would stop and listen. If the buzzing stopped then they ran out as fast as possible. If the buzz faded then they knew they were safe and rocket had passed over.
