November 21, 200718 yr After all the moans and groans about FSX [including me] I thought I should tell all about the following.I messed up FSX the other day so decided to do a clean install,ok no probs there.I was looking for some different to try so decided on VictoriaPlus by Don Grovestine,Jon Patch and Holger Sandmann [available in the Avsim library]I also downloaded the Custom AI file by Don Grovestine. Also Kelowna airport by R.A. Baum. All installed ok.I decided on a trial flight from Kelowna to Victoria International to see what happened.I set up an IFR trip in the flight planner using the De Havilland DC8-300 by Premier Aircraft Design.Well I have to say it was stunning. The trip was flying west at dusk into the setting sun and using real world weather. The Vicplus is a truly great addon. Full of detail.I set my sim settings as suggested in the write up.It covers a fairly big area and there is loads to do for the floatplane and GA enthusiast.Despite the heavy graphics my system handled it well. An average of 20 FPS at Vic. and well into the 70's at 12000ft.I have NOT tweaked ANYTHING nor did I run Ati Tray Tools as I have been doing. This addon/s is really well worth trying.A QUESTION.Despite the good frame rates they did fluctuate considerably. Now I remember reading something about a formula one can put in the CFG file to even out the frame rates. Does anyone know of this and if so is it worth trying OR is there any other way of evening out the frame rates.RegardsRichard
November 21, 200718 yr Sounds like you have it set up as unlimited so maybe locking the frames to the point they do not fluctuate like 20 or 30.The evening of the frame rates could refer to the average frame rates in the frame rate counter. This gives a high, low and average and adds a v: percentage. That percentage is what I use to guage my frame rates, the higher that number the worse the sim runs so I try to keep my fps lock at a number that maintains the V percentage below 1 or 2 percent.I can't remember what the V stands for, maybe video utilization or something. You have to add a line to the config, but I can't remember what it was off hand.
November 21, 200718 yr Thanks Ian, yes I run my frame rates unlimited as I have always done as that is what works best for me. It is suggested in the Vicplus write up that this is the best configuration to use.The fluctuation I get is substantial, something like 30 or 40. If I run at a set figure, ie 25 then I get a drop to something like 5.I read about this formula in the forum here but can't now find it.I did also read something about setting the frame rate to something divisible by the refresh rate!!!!!!.All a bit complicated but maybe some one can shed some light on this.RegardsRichard.
November 21, 200718 yr The refresh rate of your monitor, for example I have a dell 19 inch with a refresh rate of either 60 or 70. Setting a frame rate divisible by either of those numbers like 20 or 35 etc.... I think this had more to do with blurries than frame rate fluctuation, I believe with unlimited set, frame fluctuation is unavoidable.

November 21, 200718 yr That's the one. I remember seeing an explanation of the Variance and it has to do with the percentage between the low fps number and the average fps I think, so if you hit a high scenery/traffic area or, as happens with ASX, it begins updating weather, and frames drop, the V percentage will increase.
November 22, 200718 yr I guess I will leave things as they are as it is not really a problem.RegardsRichard
November 22, 200718 yr Author Where did you get Kelowna airport by R.A. Baum,I searched here and could not find it.Is it for FS9?Thanks,Ron Bring back Chief Illiniwek!University of Illinois.
November 22, 200718 yr I found it at the Perfect Flight site.It is for BOTH FS9 and FSXwww.perfectflight.org [Perfectflight 2000 project-latest sim news] On the left you will see a list of places to go to. Select the search engine under the FREE downloads, type in fsx scenery and then scroll through until you find it.RegardsRichard
