Mexico - more large cities

Featured Replies

This a continuation flight in Mexico. We finished the previous flight at the Santa Lucia Air Force Station (MMSM) and we start from here today. We depart to the northwest and overfly some volcanoes before we land at Intercontinental De Queretaro (MMQT).

The city is a strong business and economic center and a vigorous service center that is experiencing ongoing social and economic revitalization. All this has resulted in high levels of migration from other parts of Mexico. In 1867, Maximilian I of Mexico was defeated at the Siege of Querétaro, where the liberals took him prisoner along with Generals Miguel Miramón and Tomás Mejía. In May 1867, the emperor was sentenced to death along with Mejía and Miramón in the Cerro de las Campanas.

We turn southwest and reach Morelia where we land at the International Airport (MMMM). The city’s history in the later 19th century is marked by struggles between liberal and conservative forces in Mexico. During the Revolution of Ayutla, the city was taken by rebel forces under Epitacio Huerta and General García Pueblita but was taken back in 1855 by forces under Antonio López de Santa Anna. Rebels attacked Santa Anna's troops again a year later. French troops imposing imperial rule entered the city in 1863, with the republican forces moving the capital of Michoacán to Uruapan while conservative families in Morelia pledged support for emperor Maximilian I, who then visited the city. In 1867, the city was taken by republican general Nicolás de Régules, and the capital of Michoacán returned to Morelia. In 1869, during a rebellion against Benito Juárez’s government, General Epitacio Huerta attacked government positions in the city but was beaten back by forces under Mariano Escobedo.

We head north and land at Celaya (MMCY) and continue to León (MMLO). On the same course further northwest we arrive at Aquascalientes (MMAS). Aguascalientes is one of the smallest states of Mexico, either by population or land; nonetheless, it is the 4th state by population density, and its economic development in recent years has located it as the 7th state by Human Development Index and the 8th with the highest GDP per capita. Aguascalientes was historically known for its former railroad and textile industry, as well as winemaking, an industry that remains today. During the 2010s Aguascalientes became the fastest-growing state in the country for the whole decade.

Finally we arrive at Zacatecas (MMZC), where we end today’s flight. The city had its start as a Spanish mining camp in the mid-16th century. Native Americans had already known about the area's rich deposits of silver and other minerals. Due to the wealth that the mines provided, Zacatecas quickly became one of the most important mining cities in New Spain. The area saw battles during the turbulent 19th century, but the next major event was the Battle of Zacatecas during the Mexican Revolution when Francisco Villa captured the town, an event still celebrated every anniversary. Today, the colonial part of the city is a World Heritage Site, due to the Baroque and other structures built during its mining days. Mining remains an important industry.

The flight has 375 miles and 5 landings. I will be in the BS King Air 350, but any aircraft in the same speed range is suitable. All runways are pretty long, but the field elevation is between 6000 and 7000 feet at all airfields. Please fly what you like.

The flight plans are here.

One thing I learned on my trip is not to go to Mexico in the summer. Never ever felt humidity like there.
