Not sure I understand how this works. I understand what it does (according to the manual), but when I use it I'm not sure the plane is actually doing anything. If I don't have the autopilot on, then it switches to Roll and Pitch mode, but doesn't engage the AP. If the AP is engaged, then it briefly displays LVL and then switches back to ROL, and disengages the AP. 

Is it broken, am I doing something wrong, or is it working as intended?

 

When I was trained in the GFC500 autopilot, I recall pushing the blue LVL-button engaged the AP and cancelled out any previous ROLL and PITCH modes and replaced them with "LVL". This was instant and quite violent 😂

So yeah, sounds like it's not working as intended on your end
