black screen/blown out Nvidia drivers during pilot creation?

Featured Replies

Now that there's a workaround for the incompatible/undesired 2020 marketplace stuff I decided to go for it and pick the new sim up.  Has anyone else had an issue with the sim corrupting GPU drivers?  I was running the newest Nvidia ones that are supposed to support the sim.  They've been fine with other games/etc since installed them a few days after release.  While setting up my pilot avatar's look both my monitors went black and I had to force a reboot.  Seems the sim blew out my GPU drivers or something because after that DWM kept crashing just on the desktop within a couple minutes of booting up.  I had to DDU them and have temporarily put an older driver on.  So far system seems stable again and ran a bunch of hardware checks in OCCT with no issues.  Will probably try the new drivers and 2024 again in a bit, but wanted to see if others have had an issue and what to do to fix it if so?  I definitely need to limit GPU usage in the menus I was getting 350W of power draw on the GPU alone sitting in the menus.

I installed FS 24 today to see for myself what's going on.

When I turned on the battery for the 737 Max at JFK the same thing happened. The screen immediately went black and locked up the entire computer. I waited 5 minutes and FS 24 CTD and I didn't have to reboot.

Well, I saw for myself what's going on. Played CoD Black Ops for the rest of the evening.

Thx both of you guys.  I'm re-testing stability with the new drivers now on games that have been working with it since I installed it a few days after release and if I'm still good now, I'll try MSFS 2024 again (2020 etc is fine still).  If it happens again in 2024 I'll try my older drivers, I was just trying to make sure I was on one updated for 2024.  I've been using 556.12 since the Diablo xpac came out though before these.  I was actually on a 555.x and D4 forced me to update a bit and I'd held off due to reports of VRR/freesync flickering on the newer 560+ drivers for my monitor brand/year/series

You need to find the StreamedPackages folder in the folder that has the usercfg settings file.  For Steam it's appdata\roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024\StreamedPackages.  I think Store versions are in that appdata\local location instead.  In StreamedPackages find the folder name for the addon(s) you want to block, then create a blank folder of the same name in your Community folder.  Apparently the sim overrides streamed packages with community folder ones when both exist and since the community folder version is empty it just doesn't load anything.  You can confirm it works if you go back into your library in the marketplace and it should no longer show up in the Streamed section.

Also, I reloaded the latest driver and started the sim back up.  Not sure what happened the first time but it behaved this time.  I also locked FPS in Nvidia Control Panel though it didn't seem to work at first run, so I temporarily turned on half refresh rate vsync to cap fps while doing the setup stuff.  I wonder if some bug with the runaway fps in the menus caused the sim to crash and corrupt the driver on its way out.

Thanks for the workaround info :) ... good to know!
