(MSFS2024) Airbus adventure in the high Rockies...

Featured Replies

I recently flew the Vision Jet in the Alps mountains (see my earlier post, if you wish). I'd however originally intended to fly it from KTEX (Telluride Regional Airport), in Colorado, (see my shot #1 below). My motivation for visiting KTEX/Telluride are twofold: (1) KTEX, I noticed, is one of the hand-crafted airports (newly) listed for MSFS2024 (so is Aspen/KASE, btw) (2) Telluride, Colorado, is one of the most picturesque small towns in the Rockies, and its iconic small-town (main) street, dramatically poised against a rising mountain backdrop in the far-end, has been used in many film shootings, a couple of which films I recall well. This is a town, so to speak, is situated on top of the high Rockies. It's not only at 9,000+ ft elevation itself, but surrounded, practically on all sides, by rising mountain peaks between 13,000 ft to 14,000 ft, in close proximity. Telluride is said to sit in a "Box Canyon" i.e., a Canyon within mountains or gorges that have an opening on only one side. Consider also this fact, "Telluride is home to more than a dozen peaks over 14,000 feet and 300 over 13,000 feet..." ...mountains belonging to the rugged and beautiful San Juan Mountains Range.

So, as I (leisurely) continue test the a/c, one by one, in MSFS2024, to find the ones that fly normally for me (in Xbox) without causing me trouble, I thought today of the A330. I must say, most airliners in my Xbox/MSFS2024 are currently un-flyable for me for one or more reasons (especially those by iniBuilds e.g., A330, A321, A310, A400 etc.). I did however fly the (Asobo) B748 in my previous post. Anyway, most airliner type a/c, I think, were released into MSFS2024 without adequate testing, if at all. Moreover, I've been checking often my "Marketplace" in Xbox which has had a perpetual "Coming Soon" banner hanging there since release, so, it's not possible to pick up any add-on a/c or/and liveries (old or new) from the Marketplace. I am hopeful that once the Marketplace opens for business, things will improve quickly...

One of the new a/c in MSFS2024 that I wished to fly is the iniBuilds A330-300, seen in the MSFS2024 Trailer/launch Video, in the form of that KLM A330, pictured on the apron, along with an abundance of United Airlines (large) jetliners (777s/787s etc.) sauntering around, what I might recall as a typical scene from my home town airport, Chicago O'Hare. Unfortunately, so far, I have not been able to fly the iniBuilds A330, due to obstacles posed by this SIM. So, after several (unsuccessful) attempts today with it, I have gone back to the (other) modest offering of LVFR A330-200, in my hangar, which, a much less complex SIM, flew faultlessly today. Now, back to, KTEX/Telluride: The Airport has a single (09/27) runway of "7,111" ft length. Since I was committed to fly the A330 today for this post, I checked that the A330-200 has a takeoff distance requirement of 7,500 ft. Nonetheless, yours truly undaunted (virtual) aviator...🙂...did not shy away from (successfully, I might add...🙂...see pictures below) lifting off KTEX/Telluride, on an Airbus A330-200 today, an airplane I've travelled umpteen times on, in the RW.

However, a word of caution to the wise (virtual) aviators of my kind...🙂..., "This flight is conducted by a (professional) virtual simmer on the (imaginary) closed course of a home TV screen...🙂..., so, do not attempt w/o sufficient advisement...". BTW, my caution to you, here, is inspired by a commercial I've caught recently of a Porsche Macan Ad by Dua Lipa...🙂... (search for these keywords, "Dua Lipa for Porsche", if you are interested in this worth-viewing 2min video). Though the Porsche Macan is touted to be, "...Five doors, five seats, yet incomparable, unmistakable and unstoppable...", you will spot the small print "Professional Driver. Closed Course. Do Not Attempt." warning interspersed throughout the video clip, at multiple points of this commercial...Oh well...

I lift off Rwy 27 (KTEX), in the (westward) direction usually reserved for takeoff from this airport (please recall that the town is located in a "Box Canyon"), and get barely airborne just before I run out of (precious) real-estate runway...🙂...Phew..., then I manually maintain pitch to clear the impending mountains first and soon activate LNAV (aka: the managed mode) guidance towards the nearby city airport of Grand Junction (KGJT), 85 miles away, located on the mile-high plains, just beyond the western edge of this stretch of high Rockies. I've manually controlled the altitude throughout, keeping myself safe from the mountains close by (see pictures), and have descended, from my ~15,000 ft cruise level, by ~10,000 ft (rapidly) over a very short distance, to the runway threshold elevation of 4,800 ft, at Telluride airport.

Hope you enjoy this collection of pictures from my (exciting) trip today...!

Thanks for viewing...!

pmplayer, John, Andreas, Rick:

Glad you liked my adventure flight in the A330, albeit, conducted against my better judgement...🙂...

The capable A330 had helped me cross the oceans umpteen times, without any untoward incidence ever that I can recall...so, I'd full faith in this aircraft...🙂...to pull off this challenging take-off...

Great set of shots! 😉
