Do I need to upgrade my 3080?

Featured Replies

I'm still a bit of a novice when it comes to GPUs and MSFS settings....

I just re-built my desktop, with an AMD 9800X3D, x870 mobo, 32MB DDR5-6000, and AIO, but for now I've kept my EVGA 3080 10GB VRAM (I think it got it for around $700 early on in the 30 series launch).

I have both 2020 and 2024, with airliner and airport add-ons, and I have 3 4K monitors (two 32", one at 144Hz, and one 27"). Not surprisingly, with primarily "high" DX11 settings in 2020 and DX12 in 2024, my FPS on the ground at med-large airports is 15-20, sometimes slowing to an unflyable slideshow when taking off.

I think I'd be happy with 20-30 FPS at all phases of flight, which I can probably get by going to "low" settings (which I don't love).

Any suggestions? I think my options are:

1. Get a new card - I'm assuming I need as much VRAM as possible, which would likely mean a 4090, 5090 (not doing it if the price rumors are true), or maybe a 5080 (but given what I've seen/heard so far, not sure that will be enough). It sounds like a 4090 might even struggle with my setup at high settings. Maybe the new AMD cards in Crossfire will be an option?

2. I could not use the other 2 monitors - maybe I do that temporarily? I use the secondary monitors for Navigraph, Vatsim, etc, but I suppose that's not critical.

3. I can adjust my settings - I know Terrain LOD is likely the most impactful, but are there other settings that I should adjust?

Thanks!

Honestly I dont think you would benifit much. The 3080 is still a very good GPU

Pete, what's your FPS like on the 4090?

What does it say in game when viewing FPS?

Sounds like you have LOD and some other settings too high...

I get mid-twenties with FPS set at 30 in game on a 2080 Super 8gb and am still limited by my main CPU thread and not my video card!

Are you limited by Main Thread?
