Engine Exhaust/Shimmer Effect for FSX

Featured Replies

Hi. In FS9 there was this great add-on called "Engine Exhaust System Plus" that gave this great heat shimmer effect that I thougth was great. Especially for the 'heavies'. In spot view, from behind the aircraft, it really gave you a sense of realism watching the air become distorted by the heat generated from the turbines. It's one effect I'm still missing for FSX. As of yet, I haven't been able to find such an add-on for FSX yet. Is there one around that I have missed? (As I'm writing this, the thought came to me that the FS9 version might actually work for FSX. Has anyone tried?)Thanks a lot. Paulotin

Don't think I ever used it, but its amazing that FSX didn't add an effect like for the default jets!If you find one for FSX let me know!

Hi Paulotin,I can't seem to find anything other than FS9 utilites as well. I guess its worth a crack to try one of these utilites in FSX to see if they work but I wouldn't hold my breath. How did the effect you were using in FS9 come out? Did it really look like heat distortion shimmer or was it more like very light coloured exhaust smoke? RegardsTerry

No. No, Mav, this is not a good idea.

Sorry Goose, but it's time to buzz the tower!

Actually, it was a while since I saw the effect, I've uninstalled FS9 and sim solely with FSX. As I recall, the 'illusion' of a heat shimmer was very well done. I wish I could take a look at it again and really try to answer your question if it was done with, very small, light coloured exhaust smoke, perhaps. I don't know how it was done, but I do remenber that it was quite realistic. I haven't tried the FS9 add-on effect on FSX, but I think I will give it a try. I'll let you know if it worked, or didn't.Take care.Paulotin

the xyz values for FSX changed from FS9 so it won't work out of the box but depending on how it was implemened in FS9 it may be able to be ported to FSX
