Has anyone swapped in a 9800X3D for a 7800X3D?

Featured Replies

As the title suggests, has anyone in Flightsimlandia done a one-for-one swap from the 7800X3D to the newer 9800X3D?  I bit the bullet and acquired a 9800X3D as well as a number of other critical system components as backups, as my unhappy memories of the COVID supply chain disruptions and shortages are still quite fresh, and the Great Tariff Shootout of 2025 looks like it may upend the supply chain once again.  Considering swapping the 9800X3D in to the existing system, and keeping the 7800X3D around as my backup--if it's not too much butt pain.

If you did swap the CPUs, was it a simple drop-in replacement, or were there complications like Windows reactivation, license problems with MSFS add ons etc?  Was the increase in performance worth whatever trouble it may have given you?

My current MSFS box runs an MSI mobo and X670E chipset, and I know it's compatible with the 9800X3D after a BIOS update.  And MSFS 20/24 are the Steam versions, so that'll be fine once I login to Steam again.  The biggest unknowns at present are what happens with add-ons installed via the various add-on managers--Contrail, Simmarket, iniBuilds etc.

TIA

Did the same thing for the same exact reasons.. I decided to "stand on business" and head to the nearest microcenter when the tariffs got introduced.

So it was an easy swap. If you are on an AMD 6xx series MB the only thing you have to ensure is that you have a bios version that supports the newer chip.

No windows reactivation. I needed a new license when i changed my motherboard last year. Windows booted right up detected the new chip and carried on. I would just update to the latest chipset drivers for peace of mind.

For me there is a substantial difference in performance between the two chips and i am very happy with the decision to purchase even though it wasn't planned to be until later in the year.

Thanks for the reply.  So I take it there were no complications with installed third party add-ons?
