15 miles - Dallas Love Field to Dallas-Fort Worth in a PC-12

Featured Replies

In my earlier posts, I'd touched 3 out of the 5 cities/airports that were scoped in the latest (MSFS) City Update 10; namely KDEN/Denver, KSFO/San Francisco, and PHNL/Honolulu. I'd flown a SWA 737 MAX 8 from KDEN to KSFO and a KAL 747-8i from KDEN to PHNL (see my posts if you wish). The remaining 2 cities of (MSFS) CU 10 were Dallas/TX and Fort Worth/TX. I then wished to do a (very) short flight today between these two airports of Dallas (KDAL and KDFW), located just 15 miles apart.

The 107 years old Dallas Love Field (airport) was named after an Army aviator "Moss Lee Love". Love Field is the birthplace, corporate headquarters, and a major operating base of Southwest Airlines. And my destination, Dallas Fort Worth, is the headquarters of American Airlines (I spotted an American Airlines Hangar in the airport; see the last image below).

Once, I lived in Austin (Texas) for about 3-4 years. I still cherish the perpetually warm weather (noteworthy for a Chicagoan...🙂...it's May 9 today, and there is still a perceptible chill around in the air...regretted not taking a light jacket out yesterday...🙂...for a walk), year-round beautiful sunrises and sunsets on the vast and expansive (Texan) skies etc., but, of course, not so much the bees, scorpions, snakes, and other unspecified insects...🙂...Oh well...

I've travelled/driven to Dallas a couple of times, in addition to one memorable (roadway) drive...long-haul...🙂...1,100 miles...from Chicago to Austin via Dallas (Dallas is 200 miles straight north of Austin). On one of my transits via Dallas, I distinctly recall been stuck for an hour or two in traffic, during the peak hours, on the congested freeways of (and around) this city, its traffic certainly rivaling those of other busy cities in U.S., including my hometown of Chicago... (Oh...BTW, I heard that the new Pope is from around here in Chicago...🙂...).

Anyway, for this flight, I depart from Dallas Love Field airport (KDAL) and fly to the nearby Dallas Fort Worth airport (KDFW) located just about 15 miles west of Love Field (roadway travel taking no more than 20 minutes). So, it's obviously a bit tricky to fly between these two airports. Nonetheless, I spotted, on FlightAware, a flight earlier this week, from KDAL and KDFW, flown, a bit surprisingly, by a Boeing 737-800 (operated by Sun Country Airlines), with (RW) data as follows:

  • Direct Distance 12 miles
  • Actual Distance 64 miles
  • Filed Altitude 4,000 ft
  • Actual Route shown in screenshot #4 below (Note the Southeastern departure from KDAL and then tracking northwest to finally loop around southward to land in KDFW)

To mimic this flight plan (see my own route on the display screen of the (on board) Avidyne unit (shot #5) of this SIM a/c); I have also lifted off southward from Runway 13L/KDAL, then turned northward, to finally make a southward loop towards ILS Runway 17L/KDFW. You may spot the (17L) approach fixes (RIVET -> DRAAK -> INWOD -> GBUSH) both on the GPS and the (MSFS) EFB Units below.

I am flying, here, the classic (legacy) PC-12 turboprop, which has been available since MSFS2020, not the modern (next-gen) PC-12 NGX version that came later with MSFS2024. This flight was short but sweet, flown at 3,000 ft cruise altitude convenient enough to (directly) capture the LOC/GS signals of ILS Runway 17L/KDFW for an effortless touchdown...🙂...thanks to this nice Pilatus...Swiss Army Knife of an a/c...

Hope, you enjoy this collection of images. Thanks for viewing.
