Dual Release or Dual Headache? 20/24 Compatibility Concerns

Featured Replies

I wanted to start a conversation about something I have been seeing more and more with scenery products that are released for both MSFS 2020 and 2024. Developers often advertise these as compatible with both versions, but in reality, my experience has been inconsistent. In many cases, the product will run well in one sim and poorly in the other. A recent example is Fly2High’s KTUL, currently being sold through inibuilds and labeled as compatible with both versions. When I load it up in MSFS 2024, I get major performance issues, heavy stutters and frame drops throughout. You can see exactly what I am talking about in the videos below. When I run the exact same product in MSFS 2020, everything works smoothly. No performance issues at all. To be fair to developers like Fly2High, I want to point out that not every developer is having this issue. For example, FlightBeam’s KSFO runs flawlessly for me in MSFS 2024. You can see how smooth it is in the last video I posted below.

Still, this feels like a pattern. Developers are releasing scenery that appears to be designed for 2020 and then labeling it as ready for 2024, when it is not quite there. It reminds me of when 2024 first launched and people were just dragging their 2020 content into the new sim to see what would work. Some of it does, but there are often some serious issues lurking underneath. I want to be clear, this is not meant to bash developers. I respect the amount of work that goes into creating these sceneries. But as an end user, it is frustrating to keep spending money on content that ends up needing to be removed or shelved because it drags down performance in the newer sim. VerticalSim’s KRSW is another good example. It runs pretty well in MSFS 2024 on my setup, but there are some visual glitches that have been noted by others. These may be fixed in an upcoming sim update (SU3), but again, it is another product that is being sold as 2024 ready but clearly has some growing pains. After spending the last few months forcing myself to use MSFS 2024 full time, I can say that I do prefer it overall now. But it has taken a while, and the lack of true plug and play compatibility between versions continues to be a sore spot. I am curious to hear what others are experiencing and if you're feeling the same frustrations that I am.

The sim is not there.  How can you judge scenery quality / stability with the current state of 'beta' from Asobo ?  Give it time.

Not sure what you mean by judging a scenery by the current state of a "beta"? I'm not running the SU3 beta in my sim. My only mention of a "beta" was where I said KRSW from VerticalSim is supposedly working better in SU3 compared to SU2. Otherwise, I'm not sure what you mean since MSFS 2024 SU2 is not a beta - it's a complete and final product (excluding future updates).
