XboxPcTray.exe Causes MSFS2020 to Crash

Featured Replies

Dear All,

I thought that I had fixed the problems with my MSFS2020.

How foolish was I.!

I've had 3 successive CTD's and this is a typical report from Event Viewer:

Faulting application name: XboxPcTray.exe, version: 2507.1001.9.0, time stamp: 0x686f2780
Faulting module name: XboxPcTray.exe, version: 2507.1001.9.0, time stamp: 0x686f2780

Faulting package full name: Microsoft.GamingApp_2507.1001.9.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe
Faulting package-relative application ID: Microsoft.Xbox.App

Any help to resolve this would be gratefully appreciated.

Best regards,

Peter

Dear All,

I'm sad that no-one has replied to my question - I spent over £2,000 upgrading my PC and MSFS crashes every time.

MSFS2020 loads without any issues and I just tried a flight with an empty community folder.

About 40 minutes into the flight, I experienced the CTD.  This time it was mild - sometimes the PC reboots itself after the crash.

The only update is that the exception code is a buffer overflow code. The buffer is filling up and causing this.

Again, any help would be appreciated.

Best regards,

Peter

Perhaps if you browse for the exception code (0xc0000409) you might find a solution.
I found a few threads that mention the "ucrtbase file" and they hint that it is a Windows issue.

Xbox app keeps crashing : r/XboxGamePass

You can at least try to let windows check for issues and repair those if needed. There are a few manuals but How to Repair Corrupted Windows System Files with the SFC and DISM Commands seems quite easy to follow.

My drives are new, with data copied over from old drives, and the windows 11 installation is new.

I've made numerous checks on the discs and windows and nothing comes out.

So I'm stuffed.

Since you recently upgraded hardware, have you tested system stability? Run some benchmarking and testing tools like 3D Mark (stress test) and so on. lots of guides on YouTube on stability testing.

No point trying anything before first stress testing the PC. MSFS is quite heavy on resources and often crashes if you have overclocked, memory timings are off and so on. You may not run into these scenarios under normal loads, which is why I’m suggesting stress testing.

Bit old but still relevant.

Thank you Jonathon,

I'll give it a go. Thank you for your suggestion.  I'll let you know how I got on with it.

I managed to complete one flight about a week ago OK.  Since then nothing but CTD's.

This morning I tried a flight using the iniBuilds A320v2, no addons (i.e. empty community folder) apart from TrackIR, and 20 minutes into the flight I had a CTD.

When I start flying, it's great - very smooth, everything looks MSFS 2020 scenery standard excellent,  and then out of nowhere I get the CTD with no prior warning (no stutters, sound break-ups, etc.).

So I'm very sad and frustrated.

Ultimately, I think that it's a Windows 11 thing, but I've made all the checks as recommended on the various forums and Windows 11 is up to date and there's nothing concerning about the drives,

Best regards,

Peter

Yeah, my hunch is that this is likely a hardware issue - specifically, power, cooling or something off in BIOS settings. These tests will help you eliminate that possibility. If the hardware is absolutely OK, then you can try the software side of things.

Out of curiosity, what hardware are you running now, and what is your PSU rating? Also, what kind of cooling do you have on your CPU?
