Anyone Still Using MSFS 2020 in VR? Stutter and Freeze?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

After a long pause with flightsim, I recently got backto MSFS 2020 and upgraded to a RTX5090.  Either MS server for 2020 is not many or something happened, since I got constant freeze of a more than 5 sec and upon the return the sim decided to put my aircraft at whatever it feels like.  My settings are not ultra, with LOD: 150 and Object details at 80, bloom was off.  I have plenty of headroom in the GPU, and CPU for the settings that I have had before the GPU upgrade was good.  I disable MS defender scan for all MSFS folders and the executable itself.  Mde sure that the firewall is allowed for MSFS and my internet DL/UL speed is fast at 1 GB/s.  Therefore, I am at a lost on why this constant freeze is happening.  I have not made the plunge to MSFS 2024 yet, and using VR with XP12 is fine.  Is there any late development from MSFS 2020 that broke this any helps or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

P.S. I am using Win11 with the latest update, my NVIDIA driver version is the latest 591.74

IMO 2020 works better than ever, so your problem would probably be somewhere else. BTW my gpu is RX 7900 XTX and win 11 version 22h2

I am at a loss to know where to go next to diagnose this problem.  I have tried the suggestions from Googling the net.  The sim just froze and then when it unfroze the plane was thrown somewhere else.

Since you have upgraded your gpu, make sure your psu can deliver the power needed for the 5090 and that the cooling is ok.

Ok, so I have no explanation for this, but I decided to just use the preset graphic setting, first for Medium system, which removed the stutters, and then I selected High-End preset, and now the freeze is gone.  The default High-End settings were higher than what I was using before, so now I am a loss on how that worked, but it did.  For now the issue is gone.

Thanks

P.S. My PW is a 1200W one so that was not the problem.

So to further zooming into what caused all of this, it was the Terrain Level of details.  It seems that for my system, setting above 100 caused freeze and stutters.  For airliners, I had to lower to 80.  Most of the Youtube video suggested this to be at 150.  So given my system spec, why can't I use 150?  Does anyone know?

Strange, I have an inferior system and have not that problems, even at VR mode - Using 150 terrain level  - i5 13600  64 Ram  5070ti
