Something tells me they will eventually reach their Mach 5 goal.

When I initially saw this, the first thought that came to mind was this will most likely be used as a doomsday machine given it's speed capabilities and likely cost. 

Taking a step back and rethinking it's possible uses, great for reconnaissance and yes, delivering weapons.  I have to believe at it's probable price tag, you want it to come back, not just one way missions.

Maybe I'm missing it's purpose completely and it's just great for aeronautical research.  Let's hope so.

According to Wiki their objective was a hypersonic airliner, but their website seems to suggest military objectives.
