Warthog Hotas setup problem MSFS 20200

Featured Replies

Hello,

I just purchased MSFS 2020 from steam.  I've been a long time MSFS franchise user and decided to try MSFS202 due to new computer build and discount price of MSFS 2020.

The layout is a bit different than previous versions, so I'm try to l learn the interface.  I found a YouTube intro series to MSFS 2020 by Squirrel that seems pretty good.  Does anyone have any other intro series YouTube suggestions?

I'm watching his controller setup video.  He has the same Warthog Hotas that I have.  I'm able to program some buttons OK.  But having issues with assigning axis.  In the video he walks through assigning the smaller left throttle handle on the Hotas to the mixture axis (-100 to 100%).  When I click on the start scanning box for the mixture axis and move the handle back and forth, nothing happens.

A couple other oddities I noticed.  MSFS did recognize my Warthog Hotas and the large right throttle is assigned to the Throttle Axis in the default setting.  It seems to work OK.  But if I make a new controller file starting out with nothing assigned, it won't recognize the large right throttle lever when I try and scan it for the Throttle Axis.  The other thing (which may be due to changes in the sim since the video was made?) is in the video he sets the filter to essential and then searches for a function.  When I do that, as soon as I enter a character in the search box, the filter switches to ALL.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated as I'm kind of stuck trying to figure out how to configure my Hotas in MSFS 2020.

I have a Thrustmaster setup and it works just fine.

When you are trying to assign the axis by scanning, are you certain that you have selected the Warthog throttle on the left side and not one of your other controllers or keyboard?

Mine was a breeze in 2020 and 2024. This was a few years ago with just a few minor changes since -

Not sure what you mean by left side?  All my various controllers, keyboard, and mouse are listed on the top of the screen.  But believe that I do have the Hotas/Throttle controller selected.

Based on the couple of responses here, I think I may try uninstalling are reinstalling to see what that does.

Do either of you have the Target software installed?  I uninstalled (I havn't used it very much in the past) it thinking maybe it was interfering with MSFS somehow.  But that didn't make a difference.

St Mawgan,

Thank you for posting your assignments.  I may use some of your setup once I get this all figured out.

Make sure the Warthog controller is selected when you're trying to scan:

I do not have the Target software installed.

Thank you Rich,

I'm a newbie to MSFS 2020 so I do not recognize the screen shot you posted.  Below is a screen shot of the controls options area that I'm using to set my controls up.  I did as you can see in the screen shot try to manually select an axis from a drop-down box for the mixture, but that didn't work either.

Should I be doing something different than in my screen shot?

Tim

I don't have access to your link - I need permission.

I'm sorry - my screenshot is MSFS2024.  I'll load up 2020 and get another capture

Sorry I didn't set the permissions to anyone with link.  Should be good to go now.  Yep, my looks like yours.  Originally it defaulted to the Joystick Slider X like yours is.  I was just following along the tutorial to learn how to make modifications to the default profile so I could personalize as needed.  In the video he reset by deleting the current assignment and then clicked on the scan box and moved the small throttle handle and it recognized the movement and it automatically added the appropriate axis info in the box.  When I move the throttle back and forth in that step nothing happens.

I'm not sure what the issue could be.  I have the same assignment set to Joystick Slider Y (input 20 on the drawing above) and it works fine for me.  My left throttle is assigned to prop RPM and that works fine as well.

Have you confirmed that it works in the Windows calibration utility?

It does work in the windows calibration utility.  I went through and calibrated all the axis on all my controllers (some of them needed it).  Then I went into MSFS 2020 and opened the sensitivity section, and it showed movement there when I move the left throttle.  Then I verified the name of the axis that was moving in the sensitivity section when I moved the left throttle lever.  Then I selected the Mixture Axis -100 to 100% and manually selected the axis that matched the name I verified in the sensitivity section.  And that worked.

Still not sure why it's not recognizing an axis when I try to scan it?  Also want to try testing manually selecting an axis a bit more to make sure I can at least manually select any axis I want to.  Still considering a reinstall before I get too far into setting everything up.

Did you ever get this issue solved? I suggest doing the assignments while on a runway waiting to fly in a simple plane. Exit from the settings menu back to the flight and see if the throttle does work in the plane, regardless of whether or not you see it working in the Controller Settings app.
