April 22Apr 22 So I won't step climb if it's not scheduled in the F-PLAN in a narrow body generally, since it's very easy to exceed the MLW in some heavy load flight scenario, then I'll have to descend sooner to burn the fuel I saved, so that doesn't make any sense in most of the time. But when comes to wide body, it's something completely different, 'cause I won't use all the capability of the plane in most of my wide body flight, so even if I step climbed to save some fuel , it won't exceed the MLW, but this caused bias against the F-PLAN, so I don't know if it's right to do so. Example in the Pic.
April 23Apr 23 My company generally recommanded requests optimal altitude to ATC whenever you can, even for short haul (the planned altitude filed to ATC might not be optimal to start with), ofc whether ATC will clear you is another problem. Be aware there is wind trade off, if you are in head wind, higher altitude might mean higher head wind so not necessary mean less fuel burn, Morden dispatch software will take account of that, but FMC might not.

Thx! got it. but what about the MLW problem in a narrow body, Sometimes the MLW is calculated right up to the envelope in the plan (A320's 142.2x1000 LBS for instance), so I can only follow the planned altitude. ofc not regard ATC. A fully seated A320/738 is like ~58000kg in my company, with 4~5kKg landing fuel MLDW isn't really a issue
