GMAX shading

Featured Replies

Gentlemen,I notice that when I create something as simple as a box with a white material attached that there is a drastic difference in the level of shading between the sunny side and the opposite side (in FS2004). The opposite side is too dark. Is there a way to lighten it up? Oh, the nuances of GMAX!

Hello Mike,I suspect that this is due to the nuances of Flight Simulator and the way that it applies shading.I have since learned to take screenshots with the sun behind the view point either very early in the morning or in the late afternoon when the light seems to be the brightest.Best regards.Luis

Luis,Your probably right. My hangup is that I am a stickler for reality. The "as real as you get" pitch! If I can get it better then thats the benchmark to shoot for. Usually, I fall far short so don't take early comments as arrogance.

Hi Mike,This is indeed a known problem in FS. But there is not too much you can do about it. By tweaking the normals of the polygons you can get FS to shade them different, but that is mainly used to completely remove the shading difference, not to change the difference between the sides.

Hello Mike,All of us here are probably like that - you could call us obssesed with making it better. I have a small project at the moment where I am making realistic airport edge lights - here is the Siemens 44A2090 runway end-threshold light:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/123706.jpgNeeds some color, doesn't it?http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/123707.jpgI wasn't really happy with the aviation yellow, so I did it again:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/123708.jpgAnd, I am still not happy with the red lens color, so it shall all most likely be redone. And these are only edge lights - who pays attention to that? So far, I have around 70 different models, real brands like Honeywell and Siemens. How's that for obsessive? Do I beat you?Best regards.Luis

OK, guess we have to accept some imperfections. I thought maybe I was missing something. I'll charge ahead. Thanks for the information.
