May 31, 200224 yr I think the "D" had a packard engine in it. The "D" came out in '44.The originals sent to the RAF had allisons, '41(?). The RAF had the rr-merlins installed, which is what got the USAAF thinking the P51 wasn't such a bad aircraft after-all and started using them with the rr-merlins.Jim B.
