Problems at FACT

Featured Replies

I would appreciate some advice about a recurring problem with RC at FACT Rwy 19Approaching FACT from J'oburg or London one is appropriately vectored but maintained at FL10 and not given descent instructions until too close to the airport to make a safe (or any!)approachIs this a known problem or is there something that I can do to correct this?Otherwise this is a great program thanks for all the work to make it so good!

I looked at the RWY ILS plate. It appears east of 180/360 centered on the VOR MSA is 7300 within 25 nm. RC samples the area around your approach path about 1 1/2 quads for the highest indicated obstacle as indicated on sectionals and adds I believe 2000 feet. In this case 9,300 is rounded to 10,000.The plate shows basicly a descending teardrop entry to a descending racetrack using the VOR 5 DME outbound at 6500 as an IAF or if entering from the north at 12 DME CTV an MSA of 6500 to start a descent to 5.8 DME inbound to 4000 along 189, then outbound within a 30 degree limit east of the inbound going out at 009 to 12 DME to 3000 then doing a right racetrack at 3000 inbound to GS interception.6500 is the MSA for the ten nm radius around CTV.To get around this you can:1. Apply NOTAMs to your landings, or2. Request an IAP ILS/DME/NDB/VOR approach to 19 following the plate in which case RC expects you to do your own nav.In this case (under NOTAMS) you would come in and turn to the 189 inbound and once within 12 DME CTV descend to 6500, then left turn to 09 out following what I stated in paragraph 2.Also in the Controller panel you can specify an AGL level for MSA reducing it a bit, but not recommended by me, anyway. It really helps to have an approach plate for these high terrain surrounded areas to get the horizintal path matched to the vertical profile.Others here might be able to tell you where you can get a plate of this area.

Thanks I appreciate your helpful response!I am a bit surprised since I have flown into FACT a good number of times, almost always on Rwy 19 and had never considered the descent to be so pronounced - especially when approaching from the NW. It is more so coming in from NE or EI will try your suggest alternatives and will also seek the approach plates which clearly held the answer!

Pick up the arrival plates as well when you find them for coordinating your transition to the desired runway. They are a bit confusing.I just picked up a number of hard copy DOF plates and enroutes since their availability will be restricted come October. It was quite expensive but it fills in a lot of holes in the various CD collections and downloads available. But while Flightsim may change every couple of years, most of these earthbound locations should not too much withtheir associated navaids. I expect these routes/plates to be usable throughout my remaining years of flight simulation and I am not bound to any particular sim or flight planner.I do have the SimPlates2004 collection with updates but in many areas it is just not all inclusive and it is not a product for enroute info other than departures and arrivals for transitioning. Capetown is in there however and it does match the DOD info actually in the current or just past nav cycle.I had planned to purchase the DOD charts and plates over an expanded period but their announcement made me push it up to get as much as I can now. I also find it easier to look at hard copy charts than working with the limits of the screen map resolutions such as with FS Build, etc., but those apps for routing are very good.
