wx avoidance during departure and approach

Featured Replies

Browsing thru the (extensive) RC4 manual, I wasn't able to understand if a "deviation for wx" option is available during departure and approach phase of the flight. This could be very useful if storms are lingering around the departure or arrival airport. Thanks for any clarification.

i believe that deviations for weather are only available after your first resume own navigation, up until you contact approach. if there is no approach controller, or no departure controller, then deviations for weather may be available.got any room for a new signature? ;-)jd

Hi JD,so, if the weather is getting stormy expecially during approach the only way will be either hold for an improvement or weather the storm? And, yes, I'll be pleased to change my signature with a RC banner as soon as I get the new RC4, which I'm sooooooo eager to try !Regards,

weather the storm, call miss approach and hold if the weather sucksjd

OK,so this brings another question (but maybe I know the answer, ehehe): no chance to ask ATC to hold before trying an approach ? This option would be very realistic.

As I interpret the manual, there is an option whereby RC4 will issue a hold for bad weather. I think it is one of three new options regarding holding. If that event does not occur and for safety you do not want to attempt it, then as JD says go missed. I don't recall the manual's statement about when you get taken out of the missed approach holding pattern. With RC4 if it does not look like a weather improvement within a resonable time (for fuel burn planning) then it is time to elect going to your alternate destination.FWIW I use Reality-XPs WX500 weather radar in many of my aircraft. It helps.

the chance of hold, which is determined by your holding setting on the options page, occurs about 70 miles out. if the weather stinks, you might be held. you can also change destination anywhere between 70 miles and approach. within approach, you almost have to try it, and miss if necessary to get to the options of trying it again, holding, or changing destination inside approachjd

Hi Ronzie,I also use the RealityXP wx radar and it helped me out of the worst soup many times in the past year !What I really would have wished in RC4 was the ability to ask controller to hold for weather, not to be told to hold for weather: this to avoid an (almost sure) missed approach (and this happens in real world, at least here in Europe: when the weather is below minima or a TS is really bad, planes just ask - normally to the Approach controller, sometimes, if the holding stack is already a little bit busy, to the Center controller - to hold for an improvement). But since RC4 will bring us a wealth of realism, this is just a minor issue. Thanks a lot for your opinion.

We can't let JD relax too much, can we :).It does make sense, however, since aircraft at high altitudes have a good viewing range for cloud type/location (PIREPS) and I have often via comm scanning at KMSP heard controller requests for them especially from aircraft entering approach jurisdiction during local TRWs.Thanks for adding that to the wish list.

Hi all, thanks a lot for adding this to the wish list: another step to total realism !
