being left high and dry on approaches

Featured Replies

Hi allJust recieved RC4 a couple of days ago so Im still on the learning curve here. On 2 seperate IFR flights to Boston Logan and Hartfield Atlanta both large airports after I have been told to expect to land at a particular ILS runway I have had RC4 suddenly without warning close my IFR flightplan and leave me to have to find my own way to the airport. I find this odd so I must be missing something here. Please help.Don

rc crashes, or ends. are you sure you're not asking for a visual approach?jd

RC does not terminate IFR unless you request it. It stays active until you are taxiing to the gate at which point you'll see a termination choice in the menu.If the program unexpectedly terminates when approach comes up be sure you have run the database update utility in case you have installed add-on airports and afcads.

Hi again ,Thanks for your responses RC4 does not crash but the controller suddenly when Im about 40 miles from the destination airport closes my ifr flightplan and tells me to proceed to the airport on my own. Now I have checked and asked for full IAP approach and was granted same but never recieved any instructions from the tower as to which direction to vector to to intercept the ILS, except while on decent on the ILS giving me clearance to land. This also occurred after I ran the rebuild scenery button. I will try and experiment somemore hereThanksDon

Read the manual. You are on your own, if you request a full IAP approach. You have to fly the full approach with plates. If you don't have them, then there's really no reason to fly an IAP approach.Bottom line: Fly IAP approach only if you have plates and can program the route in the FMC. Fly vectored, if you want approach to to vector you to the intercept.Hope this helps,Pat

As aerdt stated when you request an IAP you do not receive vectors to the IAF. (FWIW if in departing your first waypoint is within 30nm of take-off you will get a cleared at takeoff to follow a published departure meaning you are on your own to 30nm out.)IAPs are handy for those who wish to also fly those portions of a STAR where approach would vector you off too early although that is probably truer in real world circumstances to accommodate the current traffic flow environment. I use IAPs in areas where high obstructions exist in the area where RCs obstacle clearance altitudes can get confused by the area it samples around the flight path bringing you in too high such as a runway along the side of an adjacent mountain. For the US IAPs, DPs (SIDs), STARS, and airport diagrams as published by the FAA are available on-line here:http://naco.faa.gov/index.asp?xml=naco/online/d_tpp

>Im about 40 miles from the>destination airportYes, at ~40 miles from the airport you will be handed off to Approach. Approach will tell you to "expect vectors" for a specific runway.>closes my ifr flightplan and tells me to>proceed to the airport on my own. Now I have checked and>asked for full IAP approach and was granted sameLet's get straight on the sequence. If you do not asked for a full IAP, then you will be vectored by approach to intercept the LOC for an ILS approach. If you do ask for the full IAP, then you will be cleared to an altitude and expected to fly the approach as published. In neither case is you IFR flight plan cancelled. That only happens if *you* cancel IFR.>but never>recieved any instructions from the tower as to which direction>to vector to to intercept the ILS, This is correct. If you ask for a full IAP then you are expected to fly it one your own. Approach will not vector you but will turn you over to tower when ~5 miles from the runway.>except while on decent on>the ILS giving me clearance to land. This is correct. Once about 5 miles out you are told to contact tower. In summary:A. If you want vectors, then do not make any special requests, let the default RC approach logic execute.B. If you do not want vectors, then request a full IAP and fly it as published.-michael

Hi again allThank you all for your input it has been most helpful. I am pleased to announce that on my last 2 flights RC4 worked as advertized and vectored me into the ILS approach with no problem. I can assure you all that on my decent into Boston Logan and Hartfield Atlanta that I did nothing but acknowledge instructions from the controller when like I said earlier, without warning, the controller cancelled my flight plan after telling me to expect to land on a particular runway. Why this happened I do not know but I am going to now after flying 2 successful missions try those airports again and see what happens.Don
