December 10, 200718 yr Flying into KSNA yesterday I was vectored to 19R but after hitting the approach button on the AP the bug did not come alive, passed the airport and had to turn back. Don't believe that this is a RC issue but rather FSX. So, does the ILS freq go into NAV1 or NAV2, I can't seem to get it right and I know I have done this before. Thanks
December 10, 200718 yr Commercial Member i put it into both. but nav1 is the one you want.were you receiving the ils signal before you engaged APPR?jd JD Read my blog
December 10, 200718 yr Yes sir. I am going to fly it again tonight. Actually to save time I am just going to leave from KSNA and return on the same heading that was assigned by RC. It was 225 and the rwy is 194 so the angle was not of bounds. I was at the 4900 foot assigned alt also.
December 11, 200718 yr You do not hit the APP button until the the bug is alive. It will be off center maybe slammed at the edge. My procedure is to have the frequency in NAV 1. As I am on the intercept vector I look for the bug to start moving toward the center. As it does I turn the HDG control so the aircraft starts tuning inbound and then as the bug is near the center engage APP.I do not know about FSX but in FS9 if the ILS frequency was the same at both ends of a runway, the nav radio would lock onto the wrong one frequently until you were with a couple of degrees of the center line. I always had the audio on or the nav identifier indicator on and check to make sure I was receiving the correct ILS before arming APP sometimes (if on the panel) arming VOR/LOC first to get horizontal lock and if a GS is present moving to APP as the GS indicator starts dropping to center. For FS9 you could go into the airport and turn off the back course property on each ILS at each runway end. There is a payware application called AEX that might let you do this for FSX airports. I think a new freeware utility similar to AFCAD lets you do the same basic airport editing. I can't recall what it was called.A useful source of bundled charts for FAA airports is at flightaware.com. Just enter your ICAO identifier and click resources, then download the charts as a bundled .pdf. It is always best to have charts on hand to assist with situational awareness and they work in concert with a GPS or ND if present and also give you the navaid identifiers (for real world current facilities). It is handy to have the vertical profile for the approach.Another catch is to insure that you do not have any outstanding acknowledgments on the menu as this might cause RC to stall in giving you the next command.
December 11, 200718 yr Thanks Ronzie, I must have had the ILS freq on the wrong NAV becuase I made it work this afternoon. As far as charts I have unlimited access because I work for Jeppesen/Boeing. I use my flight planning software to confirm that FSBuild is doing right. I have found that the fuel burn in FSB is off considerably. But hey, it's just a sim builder. Thanks for the response.
