  1. Over the last 5½ years, Canadian Xpress® has visited some of the most amazing airports around the world. From time to time, we are going to hold a Throwback event of some of our earlier flights, so those pilots who are new to the flight simulator world can enjoy our past adventures. However these events aren’t simply just a recycle version of old. New flight plans, updated charts and scenery have been added where possible, to show off new add-ons and changes to the airports. This month we are doing a Throwback event to November of 2012 and revisiting Paro which is the only international airport in Bhutan. The airport is located 4 miles from Paro in a deep valley on the bank of the river Paro Chhu. With surrounding peaks as high as 18,000 ft it is considered one of the world's most challenging airports. As of October 2009, only eight pilots in the world were certified to land at the airport. Flights at Paro are allowed under visual meteorological conditions only and are restricted to daylight hours from sunrise to sunset. Canadian Xpress would like to invite all pilots & virtual airlines to join us on Saturday, February 21st at 10h00est (15h00z) and 21h00est (Sunday 02h00z) for our February 2015 fly-in where we fly from Delhi (VIDP) to Paro (VQPR). This is an open invitation to all pilots no matter what your flying experience to attend this Canadian Xpress sponsored event that will be flown on the VATSIM network. More information regarding this event including operational details, charts, optional add-on scenery and Canadian Xpress Model Sets can be viewed by visiting www.CanadianXpress.ca or by directly downloading our Fly-In document here. See you all on Saturday the 21st!

  8. For some places in the world the weather is warming up and spring is slowly starting to break free of winter’s grasp, if you live in the southern hemisphere. For those of us in the northern hemisphere winter is on its way. Already here in some places like Buffalo NY, it has seen 6+ feet of snow over a period of 3 days. This month, we are flying to the coldest airport in the world. Yakutsk Airport in Russia will allow you to experience what could be one of the chilliest travel hubs on the planet as the city is regarded as the coldest in the world. With the average temperature in January standing at around -39C (-38F). What makes this airport even stranger with its cold temperatures, is the airport isn’t high up in the mountains. It sits at only 275 feet above sea level. Canadian Xpress would like to invite all pilots & virtual airlines to join us on Saturday, December 20th at 10h00est (15h00z) and 21h00est (Sunday 02h00z) for our December 2014 fly-in where we will travel from the east coast port city of Magadan at Sokol Airport (UHMM) and head 630nm inland to Yakutsk (UEEE). 11. Normally at Canadian Xpress we avoid simulating real world events so that we stay neutral on current events in the world. However, we think this month’s fly-in is a subject that everyone can relate to no matter what your background. November 11th is Remembrance Day in Canada, the UK and all the commonwealth nations. In the United States it’s called Veterans Day. Regardless of the name, the meaning is the same. It’s a day to remember and to pay respect to those who have fought and gave their lives in the line of duty. Canadian Xpress would like to invite all pilots & virtual airlines to join us on Saturday, November 15th at 10h00est (15h00z) and 21h00est (Sunday 02h00z) for our November 2014 fly-in where we will travel from the Nation’s Capital of Ottawa (CYOW) headquarters of military command and fly to Halifax (CYHZ), home port for the Canadian Atlantic Naval Fleet and a major supply port during both world wars. 14. An aurora is a natural light display in the sky (from the Latin word aurora, "sunrise" or the Roman goddess of dawn), especially in the high latitude like Canada’s Arctic regions, caused by the collision of solar wind and magnetosphere charged particles with the high altitude atmosphere. The charged particles and solar wind are directed into the atmosphere by the Earth's magnetosphere. A geomagnetic storm expands the aurora zone to lower latitudes. Canadian Xpress would like to invite all pilots & virtual airlines to join us on Saturday, October 18th at 10h00edt (14h00z) & at 20h00edt (24h00z) for our October 2014 fly-in where we will travel from Vancouver (CYVR) and head north on an 1h45 minute charter flight to Yellowknife (CYZF) with people heading to Aurora Village to spend a night sleeping under the stars, taking in the spectacle of Canada’s Aurora Borealis. From Yellowknife our passengers will travel on to the Aurora Village for an evening they will never forget. This is an open invitation to all pilots no matter what your flying experience to attend this Canadian Xpress sponsored event that will be flown on the VATSIM network. 17. In August, 1949, Joey Smallwood, Premier of Newfoundland, had the opportunity to see Churchill Falls for the first time and it became his obsession to develop the hydroelectric potential of the falls. After years of planning, the project was officially started on July 17, 1967. The machine hall of the power facility at Churchill Falls was hollowed out of solid rock, close to 1,000 ft (300 m) underground. Its final proportions are huge: in height it equals a 15-storey building, its length is three times that of a Canadian football field. When completed, it housed 11 generating units, with a combined capacity of 5,428 MW (7,279,000 hp). Water is contained by a reservoir created not by a single large dam, but by a series of 88 dikes that have a total length of 64 km (40 mi). At the time, the project was the largest civil engineering project ever undertaken in North America. This month we are adding a bit of a twist as the event is not only a fly-in, it’s got a challenge feeling as well. The power station is getting ready for fall maintenance work now that the hot summer weather has passed and electricity demand is at its lowest point of the year. So for this month’s fly-in will be using cargo aircraft to ship supplies from Quebec City. Canadian Xpress would like to invite all pilots & virtual airlines to join us on Saturday, September 20th at 10h00edt (14h00z) & at 20h00edt (24h00z) for our September 2014 fly-in where we will travel from Québec (CYQB) to Church Falls (CZUM). Due to the size of the airport at Churchill Falls, the C130 or HS748 are recommended, but you can fly any cargo aircraft that is smaller than the C-130. Since these aircraft are limited on their navigational equipment, it’s going to be a test of your navigation skills as well. 21. Five years ago, a small group of dedicated flight simulator enthusiasts, found themselves looking for a new place to call home. Lots of ideas went back and forth and four months later with the simple slogan Fly Virtually Anywhere!, Canadian Xpress was born. In those short five years, Canadian Xpress has grown from a small start-up virtual airline with more aircraft than pilots, to a well known virtual airline within the online flight simulator community, hosting more than a hundred events a year, and currently the only VATSIM Canadian virtual airline authorized training organization (ATO) that allows us to train, evaluation and issue VATSIM P1 & P2 pilot ratings. All this hard work hasn't gone unnoticed as in early 2013, Canadian Xpress was named Sky Blue Radio's virtual airline of the year. Today, Canadian Xpress has approximately 200 pilots, a fleet of 53 aircraft, over 65,000 flights and is managed by a team of 16 virtual pilots that range from real world commercial pilots to VATSIM/IVAO network supervisors and ATC instructors. To celebrate our 5 years of operation, Canadian Xpress is going on a year long tour that consists of 13 legs and a 38,739 nautical mile trip around the world where on the first of each month, we'll announce a new route and a new destination. The Canadian Xpress 5 Year Anniversary World Tour starts at our headquarters in Montreal where our pilots will pick up one of our new Boeing C-17 Globemaster III aircraft which is available to all pilots regardless of rank but only for the tour and begin your journey around the world. Join Canadian Xpress today by visiting http://CanadianXpress.ca and help us celebrate 5 years of Flying Virtually Anywhere! *Canadian Xpress accepts 50% of your VATSIM, IVAO or other virtual airline hours with no limits.

  23. Summer is here. For those of us in the south, we have been enjoying the warm weather for a few weeks now. Cottages are open, boats are in the water, and motorcycles are filling the road ways. However, the day still ends sometime between 8:30 & 9:00pm when the sun finally sets below the horizon. This isn’t the case for everyone. Canada’s Northern Territories and Alaska, the first day of summer is the peak of all day sunlight as the sun never sets in some places. Wouldn’t it be great to go golfing at 1:00am with the sun still high in the sky? This month we celebrate the peak of 24 hour sunlight in the north with a trip to Ketchikan Alaska on the Summer Solstice. Canadian Xpress would like to invite all pilots & virtual airlines to join us on Saturday, June 21st at 21h00edt (Sunday 01h00z) for our June 2014 fly-in where we have two points of departure, one for those looking to fly something heavy Anchorage (PANC) and one for those wanting to fly a lighter prop Juneau (PAJN) and enjoy the local scenery. 24. This month, we begin our Dangerous Approaches tour. These next few events will take you on some of the most dangerous approaches and airports in the world. These events will become part of a new tour later on this year. Our first stop will be Toronto’s Billy Bishop City Centre Airport, following a real world flight of Porter Airlines. One may not see Toronto City Centre as a dangerous airport. However, when you realize its approach path takes you into and then below one of the busiest airspaces in Canada. Toronto City Center is located on an island next to the downtown core of Canada’s largest city. Land long on this runway and you’re going to get more than your feet wet. 25. On May 18th, 1980 at 8:32pst, Mount St. Helens after 2 months of increased seismic activity, catastrophically erupted. The eruption triggered an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale causing the North face to collapse into the Columbia River basin and reducing the mountain’s summit elevation from 9,677 ft to 8,365 ft. By 17:30pst that evening after more than 9 hours of a vigorous plume of ash, reaching 16 miles above seas level, the ash column began to decline. On that day 34 years ago this month, Mount St. Helens released 24 megatons of thermal energy, 1.5 tons of sulfur dioxide and 2.8 cubic kilometers of debris. Sadly the event also killed 57 people, and nearly 7000 big game animals from the mountain area. Canadian Xpress would like to invite all pilots & virtual airlines to join us on Saturday, May 17th at 21h00edt (Sunday 01h00z) for our May 2014 fly-in where to those who lost their lives in this tragic event and fly from Denver (KDEN) to Seattle (KSEA). This is an open invitation to all pilots no matter what your flying experience to attend this Canadian Xpress sponsored event that will be flown on the VATSIM network. More information regarding this event including operational details, charts, optional add-on scenery and the Canadian Xpress Model Sets can be viewed by visiting www.CanadianXpress.ca or by directly downloading our Fly-In document here.
