  1. Ha ha, I meant that, (NTFS) thanks Christian. Ironically I'm not in the USA, where NTSC is defacto. That's good to know, that it will work. I don't expect 30 FPS + because I only have a low to mid range system anyway, but if it wouldn't even begin to perform, regardless of anything else, then I wouldn't have considered it.Would you have any thought to the size(s) of partition(s) on the drive?best regards
  2. Hi everyone. What sort of performance am I likely to get by installing FSX on an external drive?I'm simply talking either a 500 or 750 gig drive, formatted to NTSC and connected via USB 2Is this a waste of time? Will I simply not get the transfer speeds required to run the sim efficiently and with decent FPS?If, in theory, it's a goer, what sort of partitioning should I go for?I've already filled all internal drive bays, hence the desire to stick an external drive on and reinstall onto that drive, just in case you were wondering why I want to take this route. Thanks for any help on this matter.noodldoodl
  3. Wow, totally fantastic! Thanks to your assistance I found that the scenery.cfg in 'all users' was corrupt. Simply renaming it out of the way, so that FSX remade it on startup, cured my problem straight away.I'm so happy, I'm eventually able to play with my 20+ GIG photoscenery add-on!Thank you very very very much indeed.noodldoodl :)
  4. Hi all, I'm hoping that you can help me because I'm stressed to #### with this one.I've uninstalled FSX from my D drive, as the partition was too small for the new FSX VFR photoscenery from Horizon Simulations. I've then reinstalled FSX and the photoscenery onto a new drive (drive letter G) which took flipping ages, let me tell you. When I go to run FSX for the first time, in order to activate it, I get the following message:Flight Simulator requires at least one each of the following to run: an airport, a VOR, an NDB and a waypoint. There is currently no airport in the dataset. Flight Simulator will now exit.I've searched extensively through Google and specifically the MicroSoft knowledge base and I come up with absolutely nothing, in terms of other simmers experiencing a similar issue. Does anyone here know what the heck is going on before I go spare?!It did seem to run the reindexing thing it normally does when you first start Flight Sim, but then I get this god forsaken message again. I've done a repair and reinstall and nothing has cured it. I would be very grateful for any help. Thanks in advance, noodldoodl
  5. Hi tunnelcat, that was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks vry much for saving me the option of searching for this as my time at the PC is a bit infrequent at the moment. All the best, noodldoodl
  6. Apologies if this has been asked a trillion times already, but I'm a bit new to all of this and really would like to be shown the specifics of what tweaks, when applied within the .CFG file in FS2004, will make things like the dreaded blurries and autogen pop be reduced, if it can't be removed entirely.I have had a go with FSX and have 'tuned' that to within an inch of its life...and probably mine too if the truth be told! But I'm back to good old FS2004, because I had a hardware upgrade and wanted to see how much I can max it out, in terms of environmental add-ons and performance.Currently I can run FS2004 with 8x AA, 16x AF at a rez of 1280x1024...but all this is handled by my card and reducing these settings brings me no better FPS.I recently purchased Portland by FlightZone and Active Sky 6.5 and with those combined I do see some slow down (often down to about 10 fps from constantly over 30 in other areas with less severe weather). However, I do have a lot of cloud cover and use the max textures, so I can understand, somewhat, why this is happening. I'd rather tweak what I can in the .CFG before throttling back on some of the in-sim settings, as I'm sure you'd agree, so over to your very good selves for your most welcome thoughts and suggestions. Thanks in advance, noodldoodl :)P.S........can anyone recommend FS Global 2005, as I'm currently 'watching' an auction for such over at Ebay. Or Can I find better in the Avsim file library?
  7. Oh no! There's obviously so much to choose from that each person's Top 5 was bound to be different. However, there are some suggestions which have repeatedly cropped up; Active Sky, FS Genesis mesh and a bunch more, so I can assume them to be essential, along with Ground Environment Pro, as I've studied their website long and hard and I think that'll add to the realism as much as anything will.Right now I'm downloading and intending to purchase the Portland scenery from FlightScenery.com...it looks by far the most realistic 3rd party add-on scenery and no one has literally anything bad to say about it!Thanks very much indeed for all suggestions and for making me feel welcome in this fantastic community.Ok, got to go hit the online stores!!! I'll prove how good I make this sim look by submitting to the screenshot forums!!!!!All the very best,noodldoodl...
  8. Hi all, I've got a nice fund to buy add-ons for my favourite hobby and I need some help in knowing what will enhance my simming experience the most. I already have a new plane (SF260....AMAZING!) so I'm really looking at the envoronment side of things. Knowing what everyone's top 5 is will help me to decide what to buy, as well as getting a better idea what to purchase in the future.Over to you...Many thanks in advance :)
  9. Ok, here's the deal on the Glass Cockpit Garmin 1000 planes...In REAL life, the Garmin will show place names etc, but the one in FSX doesn't. Sure, it gives you all of the 'proper' sim info...but it doesn't give you straight forward place names! It's more basic than its real life counterpart, which is explained in the Learning Centre. I can also report that Glass Cockpit variants are more frame-hungry than the planes with good old analogue dials.PityI'm going to check out the Google map thingy later and report my findings.Until then, I shall make up my own names for places I fly over. Like Slowsville, Framedrop Town and Someonesortoutthelandclasssoon...which is near British Columbia ;o)Davey

  11. How many people are using version 3 and are completely happy with it? I'm looking to get ver3 as it's much cheaper than 4 in the UK (from RC Simulations) as Ebay doesn't seem to have any :((My eDimensional 3D glasses arrive later this week too, so I want to be able to use both in FSX. Has anyone got any happy tales to tell me about using both with FSX?ThanksDavey
  12. ...is anyone using them and can you give any feedback?thanks in advanceDavey
  13. OOoh! But isn't there already a Garmin with some of the planes in FSX...the ones identified as being the 'glass cockpit' variant??Should I be making myself familiar with this piece of kit then?Sorry, it might seem as if I've never flown a virtual plane in my life. That couldn't be further from the truth actually, but I've up until now steared clear of getting too technical with the sim. I just pick a plane, pick an airport, pick some weather and then go out and have a look around. Flight plans aren't really on my agenda, but if it will help give me what I want then I'm willing to start learning. So maybe FSX HAS got the ability after all? Hmmm...Thanks Garett
  14. Derek D...I Thank You!That's very very cool indeed. Being able to use the greatest EVER free thing on the internet with FSX has me greatly excited.MS still need to get it sorted though!Davey
  15. Hi AllFirstly, let me start by saying that FSX iS, without doubt, an absolutely phenomenal place to lose yourself in. And it is MUCH better than FS9. Actually, it takes a giant poo on the head of FS9 and only those who have spent hundreds in either man hours or
