FSX LOD help (Blurry textures from afar).
You can still get a lot of enjoyment using FSX on an old system with a very good display and frame-rates, with a few qualifications. I use a Q9400 processor (2.8 MHz same as you) with an old 1 MB Nvidia GTS 250, at 1920x1080 dual display. 1. DX10 mode using Steve's fixer is an absolute must and works very well on a Win8 system. 2. You really can't fly airliners because of required texture loading rates. But GA aircraft, particularly default ones, run very well. I use almost excusively the Maule which in my opinion is very well done. 3. Orbx scenery will run very well, A good example is New Zealand. Even detailed add on airport scenery by them runs well eg. Milford Sound. I really enjoy the approach into this one and now have a real life visit there on my bucket list. 4. I have found setting trees and buildings in autogen to 900 / 1300 in the config., in combination with very dense in the FSX menu, gives a pleasing display that is not taxing my system with the Orbx scenery. 5. Someone suggested for blurries a mesh resolution of 19m which Orbx does not recommend, but I do use it without adverse effect that I have seen and for me it does help with the "blurries" issue on my system. 6. I run unlimited in FSX but lock frames to a pleasing 25 externally using a prog called Dxtory. May drop to high teens into a more detailed airport like NZQN , but no issue at all with all the smaller ones in the Orbx pkg. 7. If you want AI, limit it using Air Traffic Mgr ( in my case to only 2 aircraft in your immediate vicinity) Hope some of this is encouraging and helpful Larry

Simple Autogen Default change has revolutionized my FSX!
What I actually see is much more dense autogen with smoother performance. I previously had the setting one notch to the left but with heavily throttled number of trees, buildings in the fsx.cfg to be "smooth". Now a better ground appearance with smooth flying characteristics , I use NI external frame limiter @ 29. It would often dip below this. Now with better ground appearance it is maintained. I think this has helped with blurries because the 250 GTS video card is unburdened a little. Just my experience. A significant improvement in how the sim runs for me.

Simple Autogen Default change has revolutionized my FSX!
Thank you sir for bringing it to my attention. I have a Q9400 @ 2.6 . Between DX10 and this one I'm more than happy using the aircraft ( Realair Lancair) and scenery ( Orbx New Zealand) I use most. Never been able to run autogen at full density with default number of trees, bldgs. Even seems to now avoid occasional blurries I used to get requiring a refresh to clear. I'm glad you pointed it out.

Limited to baloons mission !
I have a problem even after finishing the first 2 missions I'm finding I have to keep flying the 2 initial training missions everytime I re-start the simulator. I get an error msg on start-up "failed to read from file: .............PlayerData career1.bin" I tried deleting the file but same problem occurs and a new career1.bin is generated. Using WinXP64. Any advise appreciated.

Zoom levels
Thanks for the replies. What I would like to do is keep the outside perspective of 1.2 zoombut a much lesser zoom <1.0 of the panel from the correct position in the pilot seat. At 1.2zoom the panel is way too large from the seat position. I wondered if there is anything in the panel.cfg to do this.

Zoom levels
Is there anyway in FSX to independently change the outside zoom level vs. the virtualcockpit zoom. I like an outside view of 1.2 regarding what I see on approach but this makesthe panel very close and limited in view and cannot be overcome by just moving eyepoint. Thanks
