  1. Hiya. Could be a number of things affecting the inability to save the controller settings. Depends on your operating system, permissions under security settings and possibly other peripherals installed. I would probably uninstall the pedals first to make sure that your standard.xml is updated without them, then reinstall the driver, plug it in when prompted, set the reverse to checked and then close fsx without flying. That should save an updated standard.xml in the control settings folder. I would also suggest having a look at the saitek forum for other solutions as others have had this problem, in case the uninstall and reinstall doesnt work. I had problems lately with my settings not saving and it wasnt a saitek problem at all but a problem with the standard.xml not saving. Hopefully you wont need to go to those lengths with yours. Hope this helps
  2. I have a load of Saitek periperals including the rudder pedals, so the following might help. I use FSX rather than FS9 now, but i would think the principles are the same Download the most recent driver from the Saitek Website. Make sure that your pedals aren't plugged in. Run the driver software and then plug in the pedals when it tells you. Once the PC has found them you'll get the screen which shows the red bars so you can check they are working. Once you've pressed them all a few times thats it. The driver prompts will tell you when to go 'Next' and 'finish' Once thats done, go to the Settings - Controls options Best to make sure that when you toggle between the Calibration, Buttons/Keys and Control Axes that they are all set to the Pedals before you start, that way you wont go between the pages and end up changing the assignments for anything else... its easily done.. Control Axis Brake (left) - Axis is set to Left Toe. Reverse is CHECKED Brake (right) - Axis is set to Right Toe. Reverse is CHECKED Rudder Axis - Axis is set to rudder. Reverse is NOT checked Buttons/Keys Make sure that every entry is empty. If there are any settings in there which are being picked up from other peripherals, delete the 'Joystick assignment' Calibration Brake (left) - 75% to 90% Null Zone is 0 Brake (right) - 75% to 90% Null Zone is 0 Rudder Axis - 75% to 90% Null Zone is 0 I used to have the ruddar and my yoke on FS9 and looking back at the notes i kept when i set up the periperals in FSX, it looks like they are the same. Hope this helps Steph
  3. Hats off to you.. I think you might have solved it ! I never knew that FSX would automatically create a standard.xml on exit. I had already deleted all the saitek drivers, files etc. so i made a copy of the standard.xml and then deleted the one that was there. I then set up all the Saitek peripherals one by one with the most up to date drivers, went through the adjustments and re-assignments for the yoke, pedals, throttles and trim wheel then without going flying, i just closed down and hey presto, a brand new standard.xml was created. Although i'm no .xml code reader, it looks like everything is in there! I've made a copy but it seems that i don't need to; for some reason any changes i make to the settings don't tend to 'stick' however, i have a perfect .xml with everything assigned, and if i need to change something i can copy the file, delete the original, make the changes and then copy and paste the important bits. OK.... i'm stilll having a few issues with the trim wheel moving a lot more than it should do but i think thats just a case of tweaking. For those of you that suggested FSUIPC, i have absolutely no doubt that its the best way to have all the controllers assigned and working properly, however, as a stop gap till i can afford to get it, this will do the trick. Thanks to everyone who replied. I really appreciate all your comments and advice. Well chuffed ! :yahoo: Steph
  4. Hiya I haven't deleted the Standard.xml as i thought i'd first try and make changes to see if the time/date stamp changed. Is there anything in particular that i need to do in FSX to get it to create a new one ? i know that FSX automatically creates the config file if it disappears but didn't know it worked for the standard.xml too. I'll give it a try when i get home. I guess HI Ben Yeah, i'm going to keep that in 'reserve' in case i have no other options... mind you, looking at the forums for FSUIPC, it looks really complicated. I may end up having to post a plea on here for an idiots guide to help set it up ;-) Will update this post when i have tried deleting the Standard.xml altogether. Fingers still crossed Thanks again to all who have replied :-) Steph
  5. Hi Flo Thanks for the response. I always end FSX by clicking the proper close icon. I only tried the CTRL+C because i found it in another thread. Neither makes any difference to the settings failing to save. The Standard.xml actually dates back to may when i did a system restore once. I dont tend to get FSX crashes very often but then again i havent added to my set up for several months. Hi Toedv I did wonder whether FSUIPC would solve the problem but i know it worked with the Saitek drivers when i reinstalled them plus, having just saved up to buy the extra throttle and trim wheel i cant just splash out 30 odd euro for extra software. The panels also work fine with the saitek software so no nedx for spad. The problem seems to be that FSX wont save the settings in an updated Standard.xml. Any other suggestions? :-) Steph
  6. Hi I'm hoping someone can come up with a suggestion that i havent already tried... I've been using FSX Acceleration on a Win7 64 bit PC for about a year with the following Saitek peripherals installed (using the drivers only rather than the SST software) and not had any issues, with everything running together: - Yoke & Throttle - Ruddar Pedals - Switch Panel - Multi Function Unit (autopilot etc) - Radio stack A couple of weeks ago i purchased a second Throttle unit and the Cessna Trim wheel from Saitek, and this is where things started to go badly wrong. The Trim wouldn't work despite me downloading the driver from the Saitek site (there was supposed to be a disk in the box with the software and driver but wasnt). It registered in the FSX controls section that there was another controller added, but just wouldn't do anything with it apart from automatically assign all the same buttons and axis as the Yoke. Deleting ALL the settings on the Trim wheel and also those on the Yoke for Trim, didn't help, and every time i shut down FSX, everything just went back to those duplicated assignments.. it was as if i hadn't deleted anything. I contacted Saitek and was told to unplug all the Saitek peripherals, delete all the saitek files including all registry entries and then install them in a particular order from scratch, one by one. Amazingly everything worked perfectly. I even managed to get the throttles working with single, twin, 3 and 4 engine aircraft... success after about 6 hours of effort... or so i thought! :( As soon as i shut down FSX, and re started the FS, all the assignments had changed. Now i had the same assignments for the yoke being mirrored on the throttle and trim wheel again. I did several hours of trolling the net last night and this morning trying to find out what might have gone wrong and finally narrowed things down to the Standard.xml file in the controls sub menu on the Users settings. OK i thought... i'll go through and re-assign all the controls for the yoke, pedals, trim and throttles and then (so it seemed to hint in the posts i read) when i closed down, the Standard.xml file would be updated and date-stamped for when i saved it... Not! I have gone through the permissions for the main FSX folder and the Controls folder and everything is set for all people (admin, System, me) as FULL access with the exception of 'Special permissions which is unticked wherever i open it but it doesn't come up with the changeable tick box for me to change it anyway. I have turned off my antivirus, my UAC is set to None, and i even tried making a copy of the Standard.xml and saving it as something else to see what happened, but the Standard.xml that is in the Controls sub folder just doesn't change! I have now uninstalled all the saitek peripherals again, deleted all the temp files and registry items, and, because it was still in there, i have edited the standard.xml taking out all the control lines except those for the mouse yoke. I can fly FSX with the mouse ok, but even if i change anything on the mouse controler, its still picking up details from the Standard.xml which i saved when i edited out everything but the mouse commands. I've tried closing FSX by typing CTRL+C... no joy I'm pretty much at the end of my tether... Saitek suggested that if re-installing all the controlers didnt help then i had to reinstall FSX, but with so many add ons, Photo sceneries, FS Global that takes 5 hours to load, etc, I have to consider that a last resort. I know that the reinstall of all the controllers DID work before i closed down FSX, so i'm veering towards it being an issue with FSX not updating something it should be when i shut down, but having made sure the permissions are fully open to me and every other admin,System user, i'm out of ideas. I'm not good at editing anything more than the basics in the .cfg file so i know absolutely nothing about .xml files Is it possible that there is supposed to be an automatic save function in FSX that has somehow been deleted or become corrupt ? Apologies for 'War and Peace'... thought it best to give all the details now so that you know what i've already tried. Any bright ideas of what i can try? I honestly don't think reinstalling FSX is going to make much difference if the Standard.xml file isn NEVER being updated when i make changes and close. Fingers and toes crossed. :Praying: Steph
  7. Hi everyoneJust got back from a work trip last night and couldn't log onto the forum on my (not so smart) smart phone while i was away. Next time i'll take RSorochak's cue and and say that i'm expected to be away for a few days so that people don't think i've fallen off the edge of the planet.Going back to what i was doing last Sunday night, i'd loaded on another scenery (Gibraltar), had saved it as a separate .cfg Closed down FSX properly (End flight then exit FSX), loaded my 'Master.cfg' and the settings were still slightly different on the scenery detail slider than they were when i set them up. The time before when i did this, it was the mesh setting that had moved. Anyway, i then reloaded the settings for Gibraltar and the autogen had shifted to sparse from dense. Stranger and Stranger said Alice.Last thing i did before i shut down on Sunday was to download the FSXGO (was only about £6) to see if it will be any use, though my initial scan of it and the rather woeful set of instructions, i'm not sure till i really have a go.I'm hoping to have at least a day of 'simming' over the weekend so i can 1) read through your replies again 2) try some loading of saved settings before i fly, and then this time write down the exact results each time and 3) have a look at this FSX Go in more detail. Just to update, in case it has any bearing on things in the meantime... i have FSX with accelleration running on a Dell XPS quad core i7 64bit with Windows 7.Will update over the weekend. Thanks all :-) Steph
  8. Hiya. Yup, pretty sure it was saved as its the .cfg ive been using for the last month or so. Will give it another bash today and see what happenes. One thing i did find on the web about config settings doing odd stuff to textures was a reference to a '4096 resolution resetting' which some add on software seems to reset when fsx is restarted. It could be nothing to do with my problem though so i'll try switching between the .cfgs i have just set up first. This might all be a simple case of a 'user talent mismatch error' between me and fsx, but every day's a schoolday eh ;-)Thanks again for everyones help thus farSteph
  9. Hiya.Update on he settings situation... Bit of a failure im afraid.I had a go a resetting the scenery settings for 3 add on sceneries, but before i began i wrote down my 'master' settings. Having changed and saved the particular settings suggested in the software instructions i then tried to 'load' the 'master' settings, but they were not the same as they were when i last saved them. The mesh settings were significantly different from the level i had saved them as only a couple of hours before... So saving settings in separate .cfg files doesnt work for some reason. Is this common? This is exactly what happened when i tried it several months ago. At least this time i wrote all the settings down on paper so i will just have to update the .cfg 'master' again, but i'm still no closer to a reliable solution. Any ideas what i might be missing?
  10. Thanks for the reply woodhick. Yes, im using Fsx. I did think it was something along those lines, and had wondered whether the reason i hadnt found it on any other forum queries was because it was such a simple thing that noone else was as much of a numpty as me to ask it, lol. I'll give it another go and see if it works, but last time i tried to do that and loaded one of my previous configs all it did was display the config i had most recently saved.Any thoughts on whether the personal settings relating to auto mixture, realism settings etc are saved in the same config as the scenery.or is that something different? Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction :-)Steph
  11. Im hoping someone can help me with an fsx scenery setting grumble. I have several add on sceneries such as Horizons VFR photo gen x, Aerosoft Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Heathrow, UK2000 Airports, plus i have FS Global mesh add on. In the accompanying documentation they all suggest changes to autogen display settings, texture settings, traffic and a plethora of other settings too numerous to list, in order to run properly, but none of the setting changes are the same for each add on.In addition to this, the type of aircraft i fly, whether it be a default aircraft, Abacus or PMDG usually needs some changes to the settings to look its best or to improve the fps depending on which scenery im using. Is there any way of saving specific settings that apply to the particular add on im using, so that i could select it easily but then change to another scenery/aircraft if i wanted and not have to set everything up again? Im guessing that the .cfg files have something to do with it and i have in the past saved different .cfgs but when i reload them the settings arent as i thought i had saved them.I found a forum link to an Orbx GUI called 'Fsxgo', but i dont know if it would solve my problem or not as im not sure all the setting changes suggested in my scenery add ons are covered by the scope of 'Fsxgo'.Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations? The other problem i have is that i like to fly with the realism settings high, no auto mixture etc but my husband needs a more 'basic' setup. Is there any way of having both of our user preferences saved somewhere so that we dont have to keep changing the settings each time we swap seats?Hope someone out there can give me some advice as to the easy way to save different setups so that i can select them at will without having to change them every time i want to fly from somewhere different. Thanks in anticipationSteph
  12. Thanks for the advice, i'll try SPAD and see if that helps. I havent used FSX long enough to confirm putting it on another drive but a lot of reviews ive read seem to point to it working more reliably. We shall see! Thanks again.Minx
  13. HiFollowing some rather annoying problems with FSX crashing over the last 5 months i decided to reinstall absolutely everything from scratch, including the OS, but this time i've put FSX on my second hard drive, and Win 7 OS on the main C drive. My question is, where should the drivers for my Saitek modules (radio, Multifunction and switch panels) go ? When i installed the most up to date driver which i got off the net, it didn't give me any option to install it anywhere other than the main C drive, but now the MFD panel is randomly flashing the speed and altitude values without me doing anything. I'm wondering if its because i have the drivers on the C drive with the OS rather than on the drive with FSX, FSUIPC, Global etc.If it needs to be with FSX, does anyone have any tips on how to get it to install where i want it, given that i'm not given any choice in the setup..?Last question, is about SPAD.. does anyone think i should install it, and should it also be installed on the HD with FSX or on C with the OS ?Hopefully this will prove to be an easy question to answer... i've tried looking through the forums and Google searches, but i can't find a resolution anywhere..maybe its too basic a question and i'm just being a complete numpty! Many thanks :-)Minx
  14. Just wondering.... If it's a document that you're trying to open rather than an executable file, you could try opening using windows notepad. I havent installed office on my games machine so sometimes the files that accompany an add on open as gobledygook unless I open in notepad. It doesnt look as pretty as a properly formatted pdf but its good enough to figure out whats in the file.... usually. If it is part of the installer or executable file, my apologies for me misunderstanding, and hope you get it sorted. Minx
  15. I have a ton of add ons for fs9 but I'm finding more and more payware is leaning towards fsx. So far I've managed to stay true to fs9 and would prefer it that way but sooner or later add ons for fs9 are just going to dry up! That will be a sad day indeed..
