  1. Well, I wonder if that got anyone's attention after all of these years - if so, you're probably over 40! I'm not sure where to post this, but, I've come across my first "serious" flight simulator for the early '90's, Flight Assignment: A.T.P.! I first fot into flight simming in the late '80's with what was basically a "stick" representation of the airplane and the runways. Mountains were polygons if I remember correctly - don't remember the name of it, wish I did. ATP was the first realistic flight sim I can remember and other than nostalgic value for me it has been left in the rear view for flight programs. I hate to part with anything flight simming but it is just taking up hanger space. For anyone with a museum out there that would like to give a home to the set which consists of the basic program on three 5-1/4 floppys (youngsters, ask your older computer friends what a five and a quarter inch disk is) and/or three 3-1/2 720K disks. Also, is the East add-on on 9 disks and all associated navigation maps, Pilot's Operating Handbook & Commercial Aircraft Flight Manual. Oh, the fond memories of youth! If interested in this bit of flight simming history for the cost of postage it is yours! glb@ric

  5. Mike: I googled this issue and found that A LOT of people have experienced this issue! So, I restored my computer back to when I thought I had not had this problem and everything is working o.k. I will make a backup of things so I don't have to go through this again. I'm one who likes to understand "why" something is caused so I can fix. My guess is that when I started adding on airports I must have somehow mucked it up. F.Y.I.: I've been flight simming since the very early days of the hobby (Flight Assignment A.T.P. Air Transport Pilot - depending on your age you may never have heard of it) which preceded the MS products. I have all of the extensive manuals and disks, both 3.5 AND 5"! I worked my way through other flight sim products and the MSFS up to FSX's predecessor when "life go really busy" and I got away from it from 2008 until a few months ago when I finally installed FSX. A really big improvement but I found myself having to "relearn" things. It was good to see that MS has added some things we asked for way back, better clouds, AI traffic, etc. The community @ AVSIM and other sites, even some new ones, have always been a big help to our hobby and, like you, there has been times long ago where I was helping someone else. Anyway, many thanks for all of your help (and patience with this). Gary @ KRIC
  6. Mike: I am convinced the path is wrong for my addon scenery and I will work on that with the scenery library edit. Could you please send me your path that shows up in your scenery library. Thanks. Gary
  7. Below are some of the parts of Scenery.cfg It starts with [General] and goes all the way down to [Area.115] [General] Title=FS9 World Scenery Description=FS9 Scenery Data Clean_on_Exit=TRUE [Area.001] Title=Default Terrain Texture_ID=1 Local=Scenery\World Layer=1 Active=TRUE Required=TRUE [Area.002] Title=Default Scenery Local=Scenery\BASE Layer=2 Active=TRUE Required=TRUE (skipped down) [Area.111] Title=Rio de Janeiro Local=Scenery\Cities\Rio Layer=111 Active=TRUE Required=FALSE [Area.112] Title=Las Vegas Local=Scenery\Cities\LasVegas Layer=112 Active=TRUE Required=FALSE [Area.113] Title=Global, Generic & Vehicle Libraries Local=Scenery\Global Layer=113 Active=TRUE Required=TRUE [Area.114] Title=Propeller Objects Local=Scenery\Props Layer=114 Active=TRUE Required=TRUE [Area.115] Title=Addon Scenery Local=Addon Scenery Layer=115 Active=TRUE Required=FALSE I interpret it as follows: [Area.115] FSX reads this last (addon scenery is at top of listing in Library) Title=Addon Scenery Listed as "Addon Scenery" in the Scenery Library Local=Addon Scenery Layer=115 115th entry in the Scenery Library Active=TRUE Is active in the program (Must have been checked in Library) Required=FALSE Not required in the program I'm afraid that if I delete this entry in the .cfg it may cause other problems - what say you?
  8. I do not see any ref. to "Area .115" other then in Scenery.cfg I will make a copy of the entries inside of scenery.cfg and send it over. Gary
  9. Mike: This error message is coming up when FSX launches. "Scenery.cfg file error. Invalid Remote scenery path in scenery Area.115". I opened up Scenery.cfg with a viewer and I wouldn't have enough experience to know if that entry is correct or not. So, thinking that I have a corrupt Scenery.config file I tried to change the name to Sceneryold.cfg thinking that FSX on load would rebuild a new Scenery.cfg file - FSX would not launch. Went back and put the proper name in, Scenery.cfg, and launched FSX. In Settings\Scenery Library and with "addon scenery" checked, when I press "o.k" at the bottom the same error message box comes up that I get on FSX launch (the above error message). When I press "o.k." in that error box it says that it is "building a new database for scenery files". If I uncheck "addon scenery" in the Scenery Library and close out I don't get the error message. Also, when I exit FSX after this and relaunch, no error message. I'm thinking that maybe the "addon scenery folder" is somehow corrupted. Could there be something in that addon folder that is hidden causing the problems and messing up the scenery.cfg file also. I hope that I've made the above somewhat clear. Any ideas. Thanks again. Gary
  10. Mike: I guess what I said about "outside of FSX" was confusing. As I understand it one can install an AFCAD "on the fly" while the program is running and from a drop down menu - never tried that. I always go into the FSX files while the program is NOT running (outside of FSX) place only one file, crossing runways, in FSX/addon scenery/scenery folder and one other file that is supposed to go in the Global/scenery folder as per instructions. I have never installed two different *.bgl from the same airport into the FSX/addon scenery/scenery folder - there is even a warning about that in the readme files. When FSX loads it always shows the horizontal bar loading and updating sceneries. I will send the screen shots to you also. Thanks. Gary
  11. Mike, thanks for the reply. I have made all placements of the AFCAD files outside of FSX and without it running. Then started FSX, went to free flight, loaded the particular airport and no difference. Sliders are set to max. Incidentally, I've tried this with several airports, large (KCLT) and small (KROA) without success. Also, I've used WOAI for airplanes and noticed that there are very few @ KCLT for instance at all times of the day - that airport has many airlines in there particularly U.S. Air and AirTran. Could there be a connection. If you need to know my "settings" I'll be glad to send. Thanks again. Gary
  12. Guys (and gals): This seems like a good place to start with those of you with much more experience with adding AFCAD airports, including Ray's. I cannot seem to get his or other's to load - followed the directions with the dl to a "T" many tries and I have spent hours reading multiple posts concerning issues with addons and can't seem to figure out the problem. I have FSX installed on another drive than C: and am wondering if this could be causing some of my issues. Also, when I place the appropriate *.bgl files into addon scenery/scenery and then open FSX, go to settings and open the Scenery Library/scenery it doesn't show anything there (probably why I don't see the added airport). Path is: G:\Flight Simulations\fsx.exe Any suggestions are much appreciated. Gary
  13. Joe: On your note "I do take issue with one of his instructions and that is the one where he says to place a file in ...\FSX\Scenery\Global\scenery" (the "KCLT_OBJ.BGL") - where should it be placed? Gary
  14. Joe: Well, an old dog can learn - with previous editions I always thought that the load of the library was from top down. That would explain why one would want the default below the addon, so it will take priority. Also, now that you mentioned that I should have been thinking N.A. rather than U.S. ATL would be further west considering the Canadian Maritimes. BTW, the OS is WIN 7 64 Ultra. Gary
  15. FloG and Joe: Today I solved the "missing buildings" problem. Here in the U.S. Atlanta-Hartsfield is considered "eastern U.S.", but it is towards the central to western part of the state of Georgia. Even though it is considered east and is in The Eastern Time Zone apparently Flight Sim has placed it in the "Central North America" scenery group rather than the "Eastern North America" group. As soon as I moved the Central and Western scenery groups up near the top in the Library, voila, KATL, KORD and KDFW all showed buildings! They were only about ten slots from the top before, but that must have been enough. I can't thank each of you enough for spending your time trying to help me out here! FloG - I backpacked around Europe about 25 years ago and ran out of time (and money) before I could see your beautiful country; someday! Joe, where are you? Could each of you send a reply that you got this thanks 'cause it's important to me that I know that it got to you guys. Gary
  16. Gentlemen: O.K., that was the way I originally had it configured, but I don't seem to have issues with the several airports in the addon, only several large airports from the default scenery like ATL and ORD and DFW yet JFK and MIA look fine. In any case, I went and put addons back first as I originally had them before - jetwys, vehicles, planes; no buildings. Could the scenery files for each of the affected airports be corrupted OR are buildings placed @ an airport via another way? It would help if I knew how microsoft assembles the code in building the database when FS loads. Gary
  17. I only have three add-ons in my Addon Scenery ("Addon Scenery/Scenery") which I've listed below. No KALT, KORD or KDFW addons are in the folder so apparently the stock files in FSX for these busy airports are missing their buildings. Remember, other very busy airports like KMIA and KJFK show all of their buildings. Could the addition of these three addons below in any way affected the airports that are missing their buildings? One other thing, I have the Default Scenery listed first in the Scenery Library, followed by Eastern North America followed by Addon Scenery. KCLT - Charlotte/Douglas Intl - North Carolina by Ray Smith This airport update is for KCLT with two optional files made only for the FSX default airport: one version with the Crosswind runway 5/23 activated and in full operation where all 4 runways will be used for takeoff/landing and one version as the default runway operation: assigned parking now updated as per their website with extra parking, extension added to Concourse E, taxiways and taxi signs updated to the latest charts, helipad added, extra fuel trucks, support vehicle roads rebuilt and many other improvements, airport views are from the roof of the control tower (when in tower view) please view the readme before installation There are 4 BGL files: KCLT_RS.BGL, KCLT_CW_RS.BGL, KCLT_CVX.BGL and a KCLT_OBJ.BGL file (Only KCLT_CVX.BGL and KCLT_CW_RS.BGL are placed in the "Scenery" folder) Richmond Intl - KRIC - Virginia by Ray Smith I have given this airport a total makeover designed with the latest version of ADE(v1.37) and made only for the FSX default airport: one file with the Crosswind rwy's activated and in full operation, now activated by ADE where all 3 rwy's will be used for takeoff/landing and one file as the default rwy operation: assigned parking with extra parking, new control tower, extra fuel trucks, lighted helipad, support vehicle roads rebuilt and many other improvements, airport views are from the roof of the control tower (when in tower view) please view the readme before installation There are 2 BGL files: KRIC_ADE_RS.BGL and KRIC_ADE_CW_RS.BGL (Only the KRCI_ADE_CW_RS.BGL is placed in the "Scenery" folder) KROA - Roanoke Regional Airport (Woodrum Field) / Roanoke, VA This airport update was made with the latest version of ADE (Airport Design Editor) and made for FSX as a replacement for the stock (default) airport. I've made several changes to the airport which are listed below. All these enchancements are as close to the real airport as I can get with stock library objects. I've used satellite images, terminal photos and maps throughout the whole process so building locations are as accurate as possible. Happy landings in scenic Virginia! Features: *Parking apron corrections *Minor taxiway corrections *Main terminal building with parking area for commercial traffic *Seperate parking area for GA traffic *Misc airport buildings added *Airport vehicles and objects throughout the airport *Fuel tanks and fueling vehicles *Fire station *Runway 15/33 renumbered correctly to 16/34 *Taxiway signs updated to reflect runway numbering change (KROA_ADEX_JD.bgl placed in the "Scenery" folder) I sure appreciate you all helping out here! GLB
  18. Joe: What I meant "at the top" was that in the Scenery Library I had those set to the very top of the Scenery List so as to give then the highest priority. I wouldn't think that the two add-ons I have installed, one for KCLT and one for KRIC, would have any effect on the stock KATL. Incidently, not only does ATL not show buildings but also KORD and KDFW. But, other busy airports like KMIA, KCLT and KJFK show all of their buildings - doesn't make sense. Any thoughts? Gary
  19. Hi all, I've just recently installed FSX after using most of the previous versions of FS; however, I've run into a problem I've never experienced before. When I went to KATL I noticed their were no terminal buildings - there were many planes, jetways, vehicles, etc. Thinking it was due to the complexity of that AP I checked other busy fields including KMIA, KJFK and KCLT - all showed their terminal buildings. I did notice that KORD and KDFW were also missing their terminal buildings. I've tried all kinds of tweeking including turning autogen all the way down but without success. I've had NO issues with the performance of the program including bad framerates, if so, I would suspect the video card. Video card is an nVidea GT610 with 1 GB memory. Any suggestions/help would greatly be appreciated! Thanks from GLB@RIC
  20. FloG Thank you much for your reply Florian. This is a relatively new install of FSX. I had just started adding some add-on airports (three, two small airports and one fairly large, KCLT) to enhance them - all came out o.k. with all buildings, rwys, jetways, etc. Then I added an add-on for KATL and when I went to the airport to see how it looked it was missing the buildings. Unfortunately, I had not looked at the airport prior to the install so I can't say whether it was like that prior to the install. Prior to posting this ask for help I tried turning up my some of the settings like scenery and texture thinking that that very "busy" airport demanded more but that didn't help. In researching last night I ran across several postings from several years ago about this problem and one posting suggested turning down some of the settings like autogen and scenery. That doesn't make sense to me but I'm going to try that today. Incidently, there are no other add-ons of any type installed. I would appreciate any further thoughts on this issue, and, thanks again! Gary
  21. Not sure if this is the best place to start in the Forums for this topic. I just loaded KATL and noticed that there were no terminal buildings present - rwys, aprons, parking spots, some AI aircraft, jetways even traffic moving on the interstates were all there. Tried a number of things without success. KCLT which is a complex airport is there. KDFW is also missing terminals. So, I suspect complexity of the AP has something to do with it. Tried setting my scenery to max without success. I haven't had any other issues with FSX like framerates or other things that would suggest a video memory problem. Default scenery and addon scenery are "at the top". Using a older nVidea GT 610 with 1 GB on board. Thanks for any suggestions. Gary
  22. I wish to post a general question to the community for advice on the hobby. A long time flight simmer who has been "out of the loop for several years" and needs current recommendations. Which forum do you recommend. Thank you. glb@ric.
