Flight Assignment: A.T.P.
Well, I wonder if that got anyone's attention after all of these years - if so, you're probably over 40! I'm not sure where to post this, but, I've come across my first "serious" flight simulator for the early '90's, Flight Assignment: A.T.P.! I first fot into flight simming in the late '80's with what was basically a "stick" representation of the airplane and the runways. Mountains were polygons if I remember correctly - don't remember the name of it, wish I did. ATP was the first realistic flight sim I can remember and other than nostalgic value for me it has been left in the rear view for flight programs. I hate to part with anything flight simming but it is just taking up hanger space. For anyone with a museum out there that would like to give a home to the set which consists of the basic program on three 5-1/4 floppys (youngsters, ask your older computer friends what a five and a quarter inch disk is) and/or three 3-1/2 720K disks. Also, is the East add-on on 9 disks and all associated navigation maps, Pilot's Operating Handbook & Commercial Aircraft Flight Manual. Oh, the fond memories of youth! If interested in this bit of flight simming history for the cost of postage it is yours! glb@ric

Mike: I googled this issue and found that A LOT of people have experienced this issue! So, I restored my computer back to when I thought I had not had this problem and everything is working o.k. I will make a backup of things so I don't have to go through this again. I'm one who likes to understand "why" something is caused so I can fix. My guess is that when I started adding on airports I must have somehow mucked it up. F.Y.I.: I've been flight simming since the very early days of the hobby (Flight Assignment A.T.P. Air Transport Pilot - depending on your age you may never have heard of it) which preceded the MS products. I have all of the extensive manuals and disks, both 3.5 AND 5"! I worked my way through other flight sim products and the MSFS up to FSX's predecessor when "life go really busy" and I got away from it from 2008 until a few months ago when I finally installed FSX. A really big improvement but I found myself having to "relearn" things. It was good to see that MS has added some things we asked for way back, better clouds, AI traffic, etc. The community @ AVSIM and other sites, even some new ones, have always been a big help to our hobby and, like you, there has been times long ago where I was helping someone else. Anyway, many thanks for all of your help (and patience with this). Gary @ KRIC

Mike: I am convinced the path is wrong for my addon scenery and I will work on that with the scenery library edit. Could you please send me your path that shows up in your scenery library. Thanks. Gary

Below are some of the parts of Scenery.cfg It starts with [General] and goes all the way down to [Area.115] [General] Title=FS9 World Scenery Description=FS9 Scenery Data Clean_on_Exit=TRUE [Area.001] Title=Default Terrain Texture_ID=1 Local=Scenery\World Layer=1 Active=TRUE Required=TRUE [Area.002] Title=Default Scenery Local=Scenery\BASE Layer=2 Active=TRUE Required=TRUE (skipped down) [Area.111] Title=Rio de Janeiro Local=Scenery\Cities\Rio Layer=111 Active=TRUE Required=FALSE [Area.112] Title=Las Vegas Local=Scenery\Cities\LasVegas Layer=112 Active=TRUE Required=FALSE [Area.113] Title=Global, Generic & Vehicle Libraries Local=Scenery\Global Layer=113 Active=TRUE Required=TRUE [Area.114] Title=Propeller Objects Local=Scenery\Props Layer=114 Active=TRUE Required=TRUE [Area.115] Title=Addon Scenery Local=Addon Scenery Layer=115 Active=TRUE Required=FALSE I interpret it as follows: [Area.115] FSX reads this last (addon scenery is at top of listing in Library) Title=Addon Scenery Listed as "Addon Scenery" in the Scenery Library Local=Addon Scenery Layer=115 115th entry in the Scenery Library Active=TRUE Is active in the program (Must have been checked in Library) Required=FALSE Not required in the program I'm afraid that if I delete this entry in the .cfg it may cause other problems - what say you?

I do not see any ref. to "Area .115" other then in Scenery.cfg I will make a copy of the entries inside of scenery.cfg and send it over. Gary

Mike: This error message is coming up when FSX launches. "Scenery.cfg file error. Invalid Remote scenery path in scenery Area.115". I opened up Scenery.cfg with a viewer and I wouldn't have enough experience to know if that entry is correct or not. So, thinking that I have a corrupt Scenery.config file I tried to change the name to Sceneryold.cfg thinking that FSX on load would rebuild a new Scenery.cfg file - FSX would not launch. Went back and put the proper name in, Scenery.cfg, and launched FSX. In Settings\Scenery Library and with "addon scenery" checked, when I press "o.k" at the bottom the same error message box comes up that I get on FSX launch (the above error message). When I press "o.k." in that error box it says that it is "building a new database for scenery files". If I uncheck "addon scenery" in the Scenery Library and close out I don't get the error message. Also, when I exit FSX after this and relaunch, no error message. I'm thinking that maybe the "addon scenery folder" is somehow corrupted. Could there be something in that addon folder that is hidden causing the problems and messing up the scenery.cfg file also. I hope that I've made the above somewhat clear. Any ideas. Thanks again. Mike: I guess what I said about "outside of FSX" was confusing. As I understand it one can install an AFCAD "on the fly" while the program is running and from a drop down menu - never tried that. I always go into the FSX files while the program is NOT running (outside of FSX) place only one file, crossing runways, in FSX/addon scenery/scenery folder and one other file that is supposed to go in the Global/scenery folder as per instructions. I have never installed two different *.bgl from the same airport into the FSX/addon scenery/scenery folder - there is even a warning about that in the readme files. When FSX loads it always shows the horizontal bar loading and updating sceneries. I will send the screen shots to you also. Thanks. Gary

Mike, thanks for the reply. I have made all placements of the AFCAD files outside of FSX and without it running. Then started FSX, went to free flight, loaded the particular airport and no difference. Sliders are set to max. Incidentally, I've tried this with several airports, large (KCLT) and small (KROA) without success. Also, I've used WOAI for airplanes and noticed that there are very few @ KCLT for instance at all times of the day - that airport has many airlines in there particularly U.S. Air and AirTran. Could there be a connection. If you need to know my "settings" I'll be glad to send. Thanks again. Gary

Guys (and gals): This seems like a good place to start with those of you with much more experience with adding AFCAD airports, including Ray's. I cannot seem to get his or other's to load - followed the directions with the dl to a "T" many tries and I have spent hours reading multiple posts concerning issues with addons and can't seem to figure out the problem. I have FSX installed on another drive than C: and am wondering if this could be causing some of my issues. Also, when I place the appropriate *.bgl files into addon scenery/scenery and then open FSX, go to settings and open the Scenery Library/scenery it doesn't show anything there (probably why I don't see the added airport). Path is: G:\Flight Simulations\fsx.exe Any suggestions are much appreciated. Gary

Missing Terminals
Joe: On your note "I do take issue with one of his instructions and that is the one where he says to place a file in ...\FSX\Scenery\Global\scenery" (the "KCLT_OBJ.BGL") - where should it be placed? Gary

Missing Terminals
Joe: Well, an old dog can learn - with previous editions I always thought that the load of the library was from top down. That would explain why one would want the default below the addon, so it will take priority. Also, now that you mentioned that I should have been thinking N.A. rather than U.S. ATL would be further west considering the Canadian Maritimes. BTW, the OS is WIN 7 64 Ultra. Gary

Missing Terminals
FloG and Joe: Today I solved the "missing buildings" problem. Here in the U.S. Atlanta-Hartsfield is considered "eastern U.S.", but it is towards the central to western part of the state of Georgia. Even though it is considered east and is in The Eastern Time Zone apparently Flight Sim has placed it in the "Central North America" scenery group rather than the "Eastern North America" group. As soon as I moved the Central and Western scenery groups up near the top in the Library, voila, KATL, KORD and KDFW all showed buildings! They were only about ten slots from the top before, but that must have been enough. I can't thank each of you enough for spending your time trying to help me out here! FloG - I backpacked around Europe about 25 years ago and ran out of time (and money) before I could see your beautiful country; someday! Joe, where are you? Could each of you send a reply that you got this thanks 'cause it's important to me that I know that it got to you guys. Gary
