  1. Okay, here's where we're at right now:

I ensured the ProgramData files were there and correct (checked).

I imported the Registry path via regedit from my old PC to the new one (JUST the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Microsoft Games>Flight Simulator>10.0>Launch" path) (checked)

Then I used the Flight1 registry fixer. Here's the thing, though. It says it added the location of the fsx.exe to the path "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Microsoft Games>Flight Simulator>10.0>Launch>SetupPath", but this registry path does not exist! The path stops existing once you enter the respective "Microsoft" folder in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE", where the "Microsoft Games" folder does not appear. Is there a way to redirect the fixer to the other (first mentioned) folder path? (doesn't sound so automatic anymore !). Otherwise, I'm still getting the good old 8-c0000006 error.

    Suggestions? Answer? Thanks.

    - Joe.

With a friend, we were able to connect FSX and FSX:SE via VATSIM network and the vPilot client. It generally worked quite well (with limitations). But that was the only logical way to connect them (that worked).

First off, I really want to clarify my praise for Dovetail if fixing many problems with FSX. My avoidance of FSX:SE is not personal towards Dovetail... it has to do more with Steam. Let me reiterate... I don't have a problem with Dovetail's FSX release  . I'd rather not explain the reasons of why I'm avoiding FSX:SE, though.

That aside, my question was pretty much answered. I'm going to try the Registry fixer program as recommended and then report back here with the results. Thanks, though.

  3. Well, as I got back into school this year there was certainly a bigger lull in the amount of flight simulation I was able to do. Now, don't kill me, but I've owned X-Plane 10 Global for a while. However, it wasn't until I built a PC a month and a half ago that I really started using X-Plane 10, because my prior hardware, while quite decent in some respects, was not fully capable of masterfully running X-Plane 10. With that, I run X-Plane 10 on pretty high settings with HDR and what not, and I have been all around quite pleased with the flight model, autogen scenery, and continuous support of the sim. However, XP10 is certainly lacking in a few things that FSX does not lack (of which I will not go into).

With that, I wanted to install FSX on my computer. I'm surprised I have not ripped my hair out yet (okay, for an explanation on that, just read this: http://www.avsim.com/topic/483598-games-for-windows-marketplace-fsx-and-me/)

So, right now, the SDK is probably the least of my worries. But I really appreciate Jim Young's answers (and patience!). Once FSX is actually fully functional again, I will deal with the SDK. But what with school and everything right now, I'll have to wait a few days more.

If you want to know about Commodore 64 BASIC however, then I am your man.

    I already like you.

Some really great things I'm hearing on this thread! By the way, the studio team sounds like a great group of people.

I am still left with a few lingering thoughts, however, back on the simulator topic:

    - I recall you mentioned that third-party developers were also taking part in some aspects of the new sim? If so, which developers? Are they new or would the community be familiar with them? (or are you obligated to not say?)

    - Complexity. I know you've discussed an amount about user accessibility and a refurbished UI (which I am pleased to hear about), but in terms of literal aircraft functionality in the later simulator (not Flight School), what aircraft would be expected (general aviation like in Flight School, or also "heavy metal" and fighter jets)? And an important follow up: if commercial aircraft are incorporated, to what extent would they be functional? In other words, will there be some aircraft that approach the complexity of, say, PMDG or Aerosoft aircraft (which is why I assume, along with the studio team, third-party developers are helping), or will default aircraft have a similar functionality as that of a default FSX 737-800? Well, then again, this brings up the whole topic of user accessibility and not forcing them to "study the aircraft operations for 6 weeks" (myself guilty!).

Thanks again, and sorry for badgering you with questions!

    Best regards,

      Joe.

  5. +Berk Pieke

I first started with uninstalling all associated FSX programs on the old PC, and manually cleaned up the program as best I could, including the AppData FSX folder. I then ran FSX on the old PC to make sure it worked.

I then copied respective folders to their respective paths, including the FSX folder in AppData, the main FSX folder, and the associated Documents>Microsoft Flight Simulator X Files.

Upon launch, I got the infamous 8-c0000006 error, which is a direct indicator of missing/corrupt registry files associated with FSX. I was also created with the "Failed to locate Area.120" thing (something along those lines), but I fixed that quickly.

So now I only have the registry error, but oddly enough, this does not prevent FSX from running, but I believe it has caused a few odd problems with the add-on aircraft.

Tomorrow or over the weekend, I'm planning to make sure the program data folder is properly copied. Then, I'm going to go ahead and run through some of the files that may not have been copied in the main FSX folder (including Simconnect, which, believe it or not, I think I left out!!!).

That should fix a few things. Of course, that registry problem will still be there. I am still working on figuring out a way to get FSX to let me enter my Product Key.... Other than that, I am baffled that FSX actually runs! I am also glad to say it runs quite smoothly at 30 FPS on the new PC, even with some add-ons (but I made sure to use Word Not Allowed's tweaking guide, if you haven't checked it out. I'm already quite familiar with it).

But honestly, if you know a way to fix to that registry issue, please don't hesitate to tell me. Once I am confident I can input a serial number, I will then uninstall the previous copy. Until then, I am still greeted with the registry error, and a few internal errors with aircraft. What a hassle Microsoft has given. All I wanted to do was reinstall!!! (But they had to go ahead and delete my purchase history off of the Games for Windows Marketplace Client. You'd think they'd have the decency to leave it there like they promised, even after the client was no longer in use by the company).

  6. Welcome Martin,

Thank you so much, as others have said, for putting time into getting back to the community. It is extraordinarily appreciated! We don't always see developers reach out to us! I also thank you for creating this thread, because I myself am guilty for unknowingly reposting redundant information!  Just a side complement... I really thing the name "Dovetail" fits the sim world a lot better than "Microsoft."

Anyway, on with a few questions if you can spare more time (I can imagine work + a thread like this will be hectic):

    - I've heard of a potential Xbox One release. I've always been a PC simmer and I intend to stay that way, but I know others who are interested, and I am genuinely curious how you might pull this off. Would a console version of DTG Flight Simulator essentially be "watered down"? What would be expected of a console release? Is there going to be a console release at all, or am I talking gibberish? This is a curious question.

    - This is a broad question, but under what code language/languages (unless flight sims have some sort of native language) would a flight simulator of such complexity be comprised of? Is it more a matter of coding each individual part or putting together, to an extent, "pre-coded" puzzle pieces of sorts (i.e.: moving micro surfaces on a model around to form macro surfaces). I've been enthused with coding for quite some time. I can't comprehend how difficult it can be to make a flight simulator.

    - How many people are on the DTG flight simulation development team? Are different aspects of the simulator developed amongst specific groups/people, or does everyone collectively work on one aspect at a time?

That's it for me right now. I really look forward to the simulators and I'm glad you've continued to invite third-party support, as well as reaching out to the community! Many thanks!

       Joe.

  7. I was browsing about DTG and the new flight simulator, and I came across this little post:

    http://www.winbeta.org/news/dovetail-games-flight-school-flight-simulator-will-soon-windows-10-pc

According to them and a quote allegedly from the DTG CEO, Paul Jackson, a program entitled "Flight School" will be released soon, proceeded by the DTG Flight Simulator later this year. This article was published only yesterday, so let's see how the story develops and how Dovetail responds!

    UPDATE:

Or you can just go to the Dovetail website. Check it out!

    http://www.dovetailgames.com/products

Quote: "After acquiring the rights to develop and publish new titles utilizing Microsoft’s genre-defining flight simulation technology back in 2014, Dovetail Games recently announced that it will launch two brand new flight simulators in 2016.

Dovetail Games Flight School is first to arrive, and is set to release in April 2016.

Flight School is a carefully crafted and rewarding experience designed to teach would-be pilots the basics of flying a light aircraft as well as the essential premises of flight simulation. It will offer newcomers to flight simming an engaging and accessible introduction to aviation, whilst also being highly realistic and authentic. Players will learn to fly in iconic training aircraft, undertaking a series of tutorials and training missions, which will provide the perfect introduction to the genre. There will also be a Free Flight mode, for those players who want to head off and explore the entire world."

Sure, it isn't too much information, but it's enough to get a simming enthusiast like me going!

  8. Let me try to keep this short and sweet because sometimes my wording can confuse people, which is really NOT something that I want with this topic. So let me be honest... this my not be in the right thread, but as far as I'm concerned, this pertains to Microsoft Flight Simulator X and may or may not have been covered already.

As I'm sure many of you are aware of, a while back, Microsoft did some major maintenance and discontinued the ability for further purchases through the Games for Windows Marketplace client in August of 2013. Okay, stay with me here.

Back in July 2012, they did some other maintenance that pertained to MS Games for Windows Marketplace. Still with me?

So I've recently built a PC. I wanted to put FSX:Gold Edition on the PC because, as old as FSX is, I knew I could get it to perform a little better. To retrieve my digital download which I purchased in August of 2011, I planned on using the Games for Windows Marketplace client. But this time (and still currently), I am greeted with the message "Failed to retrieve purchase history. Please sign out and try again later." I'm sure some of you are familiar with this message. This is really strange. The last time I recall using the Marketplace client was sometime last year or maybe in 2014. There were no error messages.

So this means a.) I am currently not able to download FSX (or anything for that matter) via the marketplace. b.) I can not download any DLC I painfully paid for for MS Flight. A little more backstory: upon checking my Microsoft and xbox account, there was a notice that said any purchases prior to July of 2012 may not show up, and that I would have to contact Microsoft support. So, I was forced to go on Microsoft Support, but I was eventually told to call during a business day to contact their products department and what not. So, here we are, on a weekday, after 1 and a half hours with Microsoft support and essentially getting nowhere. I was told to get a new copy of FSX, but considering FSX was discontinued by Microsoft (and the license was sold to Dovetail, not that that's directly related), all copies of a DVD (not download) I can find are in the range of $180 (damn I hate how people manipulate economics). This is absurd considering I only paid $32 for FSX:Gold back in 2011. On top of this, I find it completely absurd that Microsoft finds it upon themselves the right to practically delete older purchases without proper notification.

So at this point: I have no way of properly installing FSX to my new PC, AND any new physical copies (which I don't have) are an unrealistically high price, even on reputable retailers like Amazon.

Note: NO, I do not want to purchase FSX: Steam Edition.

So my question: Is there a legal way (as in NO pirated stuff... I'm really not into that) to just get the FSX installer so I can confidently uninstall it from my old PC and use my product key for the installer to install FSX on my new PC? Otherwise, is there an installer located in the FSX folder? Does anyone know a retailer that isn't ripping anybody off with a $180 "rare item" price tag?

Last resort: Is there a way to actually manually take the files from my old PC and put them, folder paths and all, on my new PC? (If this is illegal, and I might see why, than never mind).

Any other suggestions? There isn't really a way to get FSX:Gold Edition any more, and I really, really am avoiding FSX:SE.

Thanks. Oh, and it looks like I failed to keep this post short (sorry!).

    Joe.

Unigine v2 is its own software. It is very much developed, and I have been following it for a few months. I'd love to see it implemented in real-world-based games like GTA or Call of Duty. It'd be even better in a Flight Simulator. Even though flight simulation is one of its features, it is not really the primary focus (one of a couple others) of businesses who use Unigine v2. The engine has a lot of potential, and is extremely appealing both visually, feature-wise, and performance-wise, but the company should work on getting it a little more world renowned. It really is a topic worth discussing elsewhere, particularly because it has been used for flight simulation, and has the potential for a future in that. But even in that situation, flying would be one of multiple of Unigine's purposes.

I also want to make it clear I did not support the MS Flight program. As frustrating as the format was, the price for all of the aircraft and scenery, in the longrun, began to look very unfeasible, at least for me... which made the program even worse.

Looking back at my post that you quoted, I suppose I might want to approach differently. In some situation, I really do not want the same format as flight. I am a believer, so I suppose a great simulator is worth the wait :). I've sided with you.

Also, not to drag on, but I really don't want to come across as someone who has done something illegal to obtain FSX, because I by all means am not. I can very much prove this if that's what you'd desire, because like I said before, I want to maintain a proper reputation to you and professional relationship, and to do this, I want there to be no hot water from this thread. In all trueness, it is at your discretion: if I need to prove something or clear something up, please let me, and I apologize once again, as I take issues such as pirating very seriously, especially with the detriments they have to the economy and businesses (ie: PMDG, Aerosoft, FSDT, HiFiSim, many more) who are just trying to serve the community prime products.

Perfectly understood. I'm the kind of person whose a bit more on the defensive side, so I'll be sure to add that to my bio....

Also, just backtracking a bit, I really am curious about the release date of DTG's Flight Simulator. Sort of branching off of what I said before (better say it now before I forget), and also adding to what some people have said. 2016, as much as I'd like to believe it, seems like a rather unrealistic year. I mean, for a company like Microsoft, it took two years to pump out the FSX Standard. But 6 years later (after a rather tedious development), Microsoft Flight was released, but we all know what direction that program went in. Now, what's enviable about DTG, thinking about it now, is not necessarily just the revival of FS, but the amount of time their aspiring to do it in. I mean, like I said before Microsoft had the people, resources, and $$$, but DTG is an altogether smaller company. On top of that, they likely weren't able to focus on the new FS until the release of Train Simulator 2015 and FSX:SE. So that leaves us to the beginning of 2015, which means DTG would have less than two years to work on the new FS if the release it in the time they've allotted.

This leaves me to an inference: they'll might actually follow a somewhat MS Flight format. I'm not talking about the $20 DLCs or/and "arcade" feel (which I understand), but rather a fairly large area for simmers/pilots to fly in... plenty of area to get a flavorful taste of the new FS, and then perhaps DTG would release more (hopefully free or alarmingly low-price) DLC for more areas + planes within the trailing months and maybe years of initial release.

As frustrating as this might be to some people, it is, in my personal opinion, better than waiting another year, two, or maybe even three for the rest of the world to be available (as much as we'd like it all at once). Now, I can be completely wrong. Perhaps I'm underestimating DTG, perhaps they've got more to work with. But I am simply doing what this thread was designed for: speculation :). In other words, if it is necessary for DTG to do this in order to release something in 2016 (if that's what they want) and it ends up being a partial release in the making, then I say this:

Somewhere to fly is better than nothing if it means not waiting another year or so for the hype to reach a lul.

Afterall... it's better to space out your summer homework than do it all at once! (that's my take on it, at least)

    Joe N.

  12. +Jim Young

I very sincerely apologize if I came across that way. I don't want there to be any wrong feelings. I understand now, and I am done. I wasn't trying to impose the effect that I was playing a game, because I was being honest when I said I didn't want to waste your time. Looking back at it now, it appears that's what I've unknowingly done.

Reputation is something I value greatly, and I don't want to leave a poor impression.

If there is any disciplinary action that you see necessary, please go ahead. I want to make it clear that I respect you for your responses and dedication to this site. My membership is something I would like to keep and maintain, considering AVSIM has been an invaluable tool for me in the past, and the community here is really friendly :). Being a young member, I want to continue to build a great reputation on AVSIM, and hopefully help others out when they need, as I've tried to do before.

    Thank you,

    Joe N.

  13. +Jim Young

That's not quite what I meant by unique situation. I meant, is there anyone else on AVSIM who has FSX Acceleration who has had my specific set of circumstances (correct version of FSXA and SimConnect, but still not cigar)? If none come to mind, don't bother looking, as I don't want to waster your time.

Oh, and by the way, I did not try to install FSX SP2.

  14. +HiFlyer You have an immaculate set of vocabulary.

Also, I didn't mean to come across the wrong way, but I was talking based off of more personal experiences.

My point was a little deeper than you might have noticed. What I was trying to say was that the more crowds and horizons Flight Simulator reaches, the lower and lower I feel the bar will be set for the quality and functionality of things, or at least that's my personal take from it. But what's truly immersive about the Flight simulator series (particularly FS9 and FSX) is that it has a range from simple, new flyers, up to the more experienced flyers who want the full rundown.

So for us "FMC Programmers" (mind you), we do enjoy the more detailed things that FSX has to offer. I am NOT saying reaching new crowds of people is a bad thing... I am not trying to indicate that. I am just saying that in some scenarios, having such might be detrimental to the overall sim. In other words, the sim might become more generic for simplicity's sake for coding (over time), and then for us FMC Programmers (mind you again), we wouldn't have the functionality we once had without paying even more money for extra payware addons.

By the way: I get the impression that I'm coming across as a real stickler when it comes to following aircraft procedures. I am NOT that kind of person. When it comes down to it, if I'm in a real plane I'd (of course) follow procedures. But even for me, there are many times in FSX where I just want to flyyy without the hassle of these procedures. Sometimes I want to experiment with Naval operations. Sometimes I just take a scenic route.

*So know this: I am not degrading this crowd of people ("knuckle-draggers" as you say). I just appreciate the beauty and evolution of code and technology, and I hate to see any of it go to waste on something as revolutionary and with as much potential as Flight Simulators.

    From,

    Joe N.

  15. Okay, let me just update you. I am very much confused now. I just checked, and I have FSX Acceleration Version number 10.0.61637.0 installed. Why wouldn't SimConnect recognize that? I made sure FSX was NOT running as administrator. Is my version of SDK not compatible with Acceleration? Should I just overhaul SDK by completely removing it then reinstalling via downloadable files?

I'm telling you I have Acceleration, so that is no longer my problem :). Since I have Acceleration, shouldn't SDK be working? :unknw: While I'm at it, here's my dll.xml file:

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="windows-1252"?>

(Don't mind the periods at the end. I put them in for formatting purposes on this thread).

Would having FsPassengers on my Menu Bar in FSX be problematic?

    Thanks,

    Joe N.

    Also, +SteveW

I just read your post. Are you saying I should install builds 60905 and 61335? Just clarifying. Why wouldn't they be installed if they should be? Thanks.

  16. The argument that something sold on Steam makes it a game is a bad one. When FSX was first released it was sold at retailers that also sold Barbie Dolls, and no one said anything about that, so why are people pointing a finger at Steam all of a sudden! Geeze people it is just a retailer, get over it.

    I agree.

I agree, I mean just look at this thread and others on the subject. Mostly pages of banter because of a press release that simply said its coming in 2016. Somehow that turned into a bunch of armchair devs, business executives, and aeronautic scholars speaking of a "definite" future that they know nothing about. If I was DTG I wouldn't continue to fuel any speculation as long as so much of the community of self proclaimed "professional simmers" acts so unprofessional.

Now, when I started this thread, I didn't expect it to get this much attention, and I didn't intend for this much speculation to occur, because as we know, with large speculation comes a mix-up of the story. Also, I would be careful on your choice of words, because I'm sure the majority of the community would frown at being called "unprofessional." Just a heads up.

But on the note of unprofessional, you bring to mind an important topic to me that does kind of have to do with my original post.

    Here it goes:

When the FSX community first gathered up and people  such as Tom Allensworth (God bless his soul) started AVSIM, the community was a group of professionals in their respective fields because very few people understood the mechanics of Flight Simulation. The internet brought together those people who wanted to spread their knowledge and learn more. Fast-forward through the many years up to the end of 2014. The community was hundreds of thousands of members strong, with honestly intelligent people willing to lend their hand.

And then Dovetail releases FSX:SE on Steam. The community reaches new horizons, gaining numbers. But with these new numbers came something else... people who only intended to use FSX as a game, not a simulator... people who use the Multiplayer sessions to act like total doofuses... people who troll around, not caring to learn the most basic functions of FSX.

Now, I'm not saying a larger community is a bad thing, because that means more money for the many companies that invest time (and $$$) into FSX. What I'm saying is that a large portion (NOT all) of this new crowd is inexperienced and, as you put it, unprofessional. I mean everyone started that way, but this is different. As a repercussion, I fear that that Flight Simulator, to this new crowd, will appear to be nothing more than a child's game. That is my fear. With this, simulators would not be appreciated as much as I'd personally hope, which may have the potential to kill off the hobby. That scares me.

Thanks to sites like AVSIM, there is still a burning passion for Simulators across the board. But with the upcoming Flight Simulator from Dovetail, I'm hoping for more than a "cheap arcade game," as some described Microsoft Flight (I personally loved Flight in some aspects, by the way). Rather, I'm hoping for something that displays, even a little, the true art and beauty that air travel -- aviation -- really is.

    That is my hope.

  17. We currently see this from PMDG and ORBX. These forums are like rabid dogs and I don't blame them for not proactively taking part anymore. They now only release screenshots and details at final beta testing stages, wouldn't be surprised if DTG does the same. It is kind of like going out after dark in a place like Baltimore, you just don't do it.

Well, that's kind of what I was trying to say. I was saying how I (personally) like to anticipate things, but that's just a matter of preference. But I thought I clearly mentioned that it might be too early to release details, anyway :).

But yes, DTG will probably do that, and that does not make me angry in anyway. Most companies, as I stated, like to do that to have a "surprise" of sorts.

*And I apologize if I seemed like, um, a rabid dog. :Raised Eyebrow:
