Is Photoreal scenery the way to go?

Since opinions and experiences seem to be what you are looking for, the more the merrier! Myself, my computer is not the hot. I have tried a few photoreal sceneries for some places I know and some places I dont know. The Gand Canyon and San Francisco are places I have been to enough to recognise places and Hawaii I have never visited. So at first I was blown away by the photoreal sceneries for all three (I have tried others that were dismal so I wont speak any more of them) but as time went on that impression faded. With the Grand Canyon the images are taken at a particular time of day so as I flew along at different times and seasons the appearance did not change to reflect that - destroyed the immersion. With San Fransisco the auto gen - well, lack of - was the immersion killer. Hawaii (by Flight Sim Jewels) I still use as it is fantastic with very good airports to go with it - but it does hit my frame rates very hard. To compare all of the above to UTX/GEX for the USA I would have to choose the UTX product in general for a few reasons: - easier on the frame rates - one product covers the whole area for all the above mentioned locations - UTX Vector gives very accurate road/rail/river detail for VFR flight as does photoreal so no detriment there. Down sides for UTX/GEX are the costs (and they never go on sale so far as far as I have noticed), and if you know an area really well you will see the buildings are often generic and/or incorrect - for example a small apartment block instead of a barn on a farm next to town. Also if you fly with all the sliders pushed to the right you will start to see a lot of the same objects repeated a lot - like the blue water towers in the praries. The autogen can be compensated for with fiddling but that is a faf... In conclusion it is as others have said, a matter of choice. Try the free stuff first (and I really do recommend Flight Sim Jewels for a look) and see how you feel. Hope this helps a little. PS: If you are flying Bush Pilot stuff you may want to take a look for Turbulent Designs tree upgrade TerraFlora. I picked it up cheap in the sales a Xmas and it made a big difference as now I can turn the auto gen for trees all the way to maximum and bush flying is much better with trees, in my opinion!
  4. Gotta say I don't miss the winters now I am in the balmy UK! Thursday the 11th that would be? I don't know if I will record it but maybe I'll get the old Beaver out for a flight in that blizzard to see how she likes it! (The beauty of historic weather in Active Sky!)
  5. In my quest for ‘As real as it can be!’ this video is the closest I have come so far I believe. (Of course there will be those who will say ‘Switch to P3D’ and I would if I could but that will have to wait for my next big lottery win!) Here we have the A2A Comanche, of course, with ORBX Northern Rockies scenery, live weather from Active Sky, the local live textures from REX, the great trees from Turbulent Designs and now the ATC from Radar Contact. Of course this also highlights how much I still have to learn so watch for all my mistakes in the flight (I have tried to hide only simulator technical errors and extremely boring stuff – like long wandering taxiing in the wrong direction). The flight is a simple one from Red Deer, Alberta to Springbank, Alberta with a slight detour to avoid Calgary airspace as much as possible. I hope it keeps some folks entertained!
  6. I'm glad you liked it. Oh, the Constellation! I WANT that one. But it is not exactly cheap and it is a lot to learn - I will likely get it eventually! Yes, Radar Contact is a bit of a steep learning curve and I am still spinning my wheels on the foothills of that mountain range! Little by little I will get it. Making the videos helps me see what I am doing wrong at least.
  7. My friend Grey Eagle issued me a challenge to make a Dambusters video along the lines of my Spitfire and Hurricane videos so here it is: Hope you enjoy!
  8. Here is my latest video - I quote from the description, "On 7th March 2015 I flew in a GA aircraft for the first time at Lydd Airport (London Ashford Airport) in Kent, UK. The aircraft was a Robin HR200 but I could not find a simulation of that aircraft so I have used the Robin DR400 instead to recreate this flying experience. I have made the weather and flight plan as like the original flight as possible as well as including some video I took on the day." Hope you enjoy!
  9. This little video for Battle of Britain Enthusiasts was made using the Aeroplane Heaven 'Dunkirk' Spitfire in FSX-SE flying out of Goodwood Aerodrome. Also a sequence made using Battle of Britain - Wings of Victory II to get some action in there: I hope you enjoy the video!
  10. Finally I am able to use video capture thanks to a 'new' video card. To celebrate I have recorded this leisurely flight around Cortes Island, British Columbia in the A2A Piper J-3 Cub: (And finally I have successfully embedded a video - I must be learning!) I hope you enjoy the video!
  11. Down in the middle of a cold and depressing winter I am remembering how much fun I had last summer. Here is a little video to enjoy and wish for summer to come back soon:
  12. Well how very odd. I found Quick Mission Tuner 1946 and ran the repair facility for it (it is indeed a program for Il-2 1946) and now RC runs without a hitch! Strange...
  13. So I am unclear on one this the support forum for RC? I tried the link in the download and it was dead. I have a possible problem I would like to ask about. I will put it here for now but I can post it elsewhere if it is more appropriate. When installing the program it went OK until it tried to install FSUIPC4 when it said my version of FSX is 'later than any known by this FSUIPC4.' Then a window came up saying, 'Your FSX installation is incorresct! The version of SimConnect installed will not load FSUIPC4. You may need to repair the FSX instsallation to rectify this first. No changes have been made by this program.' When I try to run RC it comes up with a message, 'Insert the "Quick Mission Tuner 1946" disc and click OK.' Which I think is really odd as I thought that was a program addon for Il-2 Sturmovik 1946. After pressing cancel three times the RC program comes up and looks OK but I have not tried to connect it to FSX yet as I wanted to see if this was a known issue. Has anyone any experience of this/these issue/issues? Edit: Sure enough when I try to connect RC to FSX I get a message saying, 'IRC request contains bad data.' and that's it. I assume it is all because the FSUIPC4 wont install. Sorry another edit: So I went looking for FSUIPC4 and found it here: Link And now RC starts but with the 'Quick Mission Tuner 1946' message still happening. I load a flight plan into RC and the 'QMT 1946' message again but now I can connect to FSX.I'm not sure it is working right as it is quite a big manual and I am working my way through it. So, is the 'Quick Mission Tuner 1946' part of RC and if so where do I find it in the install to turn it on?
  14. I have been re-reading 'Fate is the Hunter' and been inspired to try some dead reckoning. Here is my flight from New Years Eve: Link to Video Hope you enjoy! (I still cant seem to embed the videos - sorry - I must be thick)
  15. Thanks for the reply. I will try them out and see....
  16. Thanks for the heads up. Before I download the 10 files, though, I see they are listed as for Flight Simulator 2004. Are they compatible with FSX - SE as well? Edit: Oh, they aren't as big as I thought so I will just download them and see.
  17. This is incredibly generous! I have not advanced as far as trying to get realistic ATC or IFR flying but it was on my wish list for the future. I feel like I just got a present from Santa!

    Double Toronto

Once again I am glad this site is here to solve my problems (as well as give informitive reviews of course). I had the double Toronto downtown today and here is the solution!
  19. Hi I am Bruce66 I have been flight simming in various platforms for many years from back in the day when we were dealing with wire frame and tiny little joysticks if you were lucky enough to have one at all. I have browsed this site many times and thought it was about time I joined in. I now fly FSX SE almost exclusively and Am exclusively an offline virtual pilot. I am using what most people would likely consider obsolete computer equipment except for my Thrustmaster Warthog flight controller and Siatek pedals. But I make it work and enjoy the flight sim experience. I look forward to delving deeper into this site and meeting some of you on the forums.
  20. This is a flight in the A2A Piper Comanche 250 from Walla Walla Washington to Anacortes Washington. I have to divert at the end due to fog and it made for some exciting moments as I tried to get down through the fog. Comanche Video
  21. Thank you, Mr Young, for embeding the video for me. Is there a way I could/should do this myself in future?
  22. I hope I am posting this correctly and in the right spot - noob alert. Since I started using Microsoft Flight Simulators (which is not that long ago relatively speaking) I have read so many reviews on this site and gathered loads of useful advice from google searches which led me here. I first started with FSX solely for the A2A Spitfire which I am sure many of you have flown. I have an abiding interest in the Battle of Britain and my only slight disappointment with flight simming is that there is no Hurricane of the same quality as the A2A Spitfire. I also have developed a keen interest in GA flying and VOR navigation - so much so as to have real life flying lessons when I can afford them (which is rarely). Recently I have started making videos of my flights, initially to share with a friend when we issue flight challenges to each other, but more recently I have been getting a bit more 'artistic'. Here is a little video of the Hawker Hurricane Mk Ia I would like to share and I hope some of you may enjoy (My equipment is antiquated so this may not be the startlingly clear images you may be used to but let it fill you with nostalgia and it may add to the ambiance): This is the Just Flight Hurricane at the start and finish with a sojourn into Battle of Britain - Wings of Victory II for the combat sequences. (I see others have embedded their videos but I can see no way to achieve this - like I say - noob alert.)

Time for me to say hello

Thanks for the warning Dave. Good think I'm half mule and the other half slug. I change slow and then try not to move at all! But the only way I could upgrade would be if i won the lottery anyway so not a worry. I find age plays in the favour of the outdated anyway - my eyes think my old scenery looks crystal clear!

Time for me to say hello

    Thanks for the welcome guys!
