  1. So, at over 2000 nmi away from Athens, the Islander won't make it in one hop. I've said before I've no idea of the ferry range of the winning Islander in the London to Sydney Air Race 1969, and even if I knew the range, it would be a problem having the Flight1 BN-2 behaving as per a ferry configuration. The maximum range more or less gives us the destination of Diyarbakir Airport (LTCC) which is also a military base in south eastern Turkey. The weather is set to be good so off we go. Taxiing out at LGAV. Lined up and clear for takeoff. Hope we packed the sandwiches & refreshments! Settled into the cruise. 9-10000 feet altitude allows me to forget about the throttles and leave them wide open giving the required 20 inches of pressure. Flying past Mount Erciyes, I believe..😖 I would have thought there should have been snow at the summit.. (FSX NOTAM, perhaps the landclass would have displayed it had I been closer??) Approaching LTCC to join left downwind for RWY34 No mistaking this is an airbase.. Not a bad touchdown IMHO of course..😜 Ok then, ready for a Turkish bath.. The next leg will take us into Iran..
  2. In view of the recent "modification" to the port of Beirut a Western Global freighter was chartered to fly aid to Beirut. Departing from EGNX, bound for OLBA. Preparing for loading & fuelling. Ratcliffe on Soar power station in the background. Punching through the haze which had moved in. FSX NOTAM nope, no help for the lack of undercarriage door animations to date Approaching the French coast - no small boats in sight.. For the majority of the flight we'll be cruising at FL350, but climb up to FL400 when we're a bit lighter. Passing over the Swiss Alps. Venice is off to the left of the picture, the flight plan roughly follows the east coast of Italy. The heel of Italy.. About to overfly Cyprus. Beginning the descent to Lebanon. Being vectored to visual for RWY34. We were expecting some haze, but they could have turned the lights up a bit!! BUSTED! One of my better landings, but it was just in the displaced threshold... (sigh...) Oh well in for a penny - celebrated by wheelying quite a distance down 34 A bit of reverse idle in conjunction with the brakes one the nose was down and use the last turn off. Taxiing in down on side of the airport buildings... ...and up the other side to the cargo area! Time to let the ground services get busy. Enjoy🍻 FSX NOTAM - lovely freeware airport available in the library from Lebor Simulations. There is also some free photoreal Lebanon scenery but I hadn't downloaded it at the time of the flight
  3. Not much to see on this leg where we finally!! arrive at Karachi. Taxiing out at Dubai No pax to get upset about a max climbout... at 67 knots! Head across the UAE to get out into the Persian Gulf. Then hug (not quite) the Iranian coast, heading east until we reach Karachi, Pakistan. Jask Airport, Iran off the port wing. Low cloud at about 2000 feet and haze approaching Karachi. I should be able to get under it.. Underneath the clouds yet Karachi ATIS is saying 100 feet overcast.. LIES I tell you. LIES! To humour the tower and not cause an international incident I humour them by flying a holding pattern a few miles out from the airport. With darkness falling I decide enough is enough & squawk 7600. What overcast? ... Touchdown - more or less a 3-pointer! Not ideal with a tricycle undercarriage... Time to shut her down for the night... and maybe go and find a number I have to call.... The next leg is across India to Calcutta (Kolkata as it is known these days), a distance of some 1100 nautical miles or so. I'll have to have a stop over in this homage to the 1969 Air Race.. without ferry tanks! Cheers!
  4. I believe some Fedex cargo departing Bengaluru goes to Mumbai, so here we are Taxiing out. There's a bit of haze and overcast, but not much of a factor seeing as we're IFR anyway (always?) Took the picture too soon; before the gear swing. ..and after gear retraction d'oh! Turning on to course. You can tell I've not got autoflight engaged.. :) Soon be above all this - a better rate of climb had been established by this point At cruise altitude, the Indian coastline can be seen at the horizon. Descending towards Mumbai. We'll be using the ILS for RWY9. Waiting to intercept the localiser. Great freeware VABB by the way. Approach is good.... ...but then I had to mess with the stick closer to the ground.. No centreline landing .. AGAIN I'm cursed! Then again, not only did we walk away, but the big girl is still intact and fully serviceable! They were judging me.. I tell you. They were laughing, I just know it.. Enjoy!
  5. Yep! No more. Nothing else to see. The Fat Lady has finished her song in Courchevel! En route from Chambery.. Oh no.. You're not seriously...?? Yes. It's my sim and I'll bloody well fly what I want, where I want.. Let's just say the arrival was NOT pretty, it just sort of happened... I know the big girl needs a lot of rudder to persuade her in the turns, but once she's down to 95 knots or so, I failed to appreciate just HOW much rudder and yoke movement is needed! "Hoskins! Did you feel that cheeky little gust throwing us off on the camber? ", "No, Captain I didn't, not a thing..", "Harsh, Hoskins, very harsh! In fact I'm a bit miffed with your attitude, sonny!".. "Not half as miffed as the Beverley was, Captain!" Made it to the top with the gear intact! Well, the Bev was ably equipped for landing on dirt strips! For an encore she will now depart from Courchevel! The reversing pitch propellers come in very handy for backing her up to maximise the small amount of runway ahead! DAAN..DAN...DAAAH! After that, well.. landing back at Chambery was decidedly uneventful The takeoff and landing distances of the real Beverley were reported as being 790 yards and 310 yards respectively (95 knots over the threshold and use the reverse pitch on the props). NOTAM I do have the reverse pitch toggle function mapped to one of my HOTAS buttons so I don't have to mess with the systems monitor (SHIFT-4) to activate it. Considering the length of LFLJ is 537 metres with the slope obviously helping then I had to give it a go with Mr. Jahn's superb FREE Beverley! A nice little challenge IMO. I had about 80% fuel and 9000lb of payload. If anyone else with the lovely LLH creation Courchevel and the freeware Bev wants to give it a go then please do as I'm sure someone will make a far better landing than I did!
  6. It seems that landing at Courchevel is once again ...a thing With that in mind I hopped into a trusty Rockwell AC11 Commander 114 at Chambery LFLB and headed off to LFLJ. Taxiing out. Lovely afternoon for it.. I need to fly up one of those valleys up ahead.. Courchevel approach always looks scary.. or is it because I'm flying? (NO! Don't answer that ) Touchdown - no worries! Scenery looks great in summer or winter. Time for an apres-ski, or rather apres-vol CHEERS! 🍻
  7. Oh well, at least most of the shots are OK, and I could still land the jet! Preparing to depart in the wee hours at Nairobi. Positive Rate! (FSX NOTAM, I may pester Sky Sim with another email regarding the loss of some undercarriage door animations..) Love this one of the rising sun. Later in the flight - nice winglet shadow on the fuselage. Passing Lake Turkana. Khartoum. Feet wet over the Mediterranean. I think the mountain ranges in the distance are in northern Greece and Albania. Mount Etna, Sicily near the horizon, above the port wing. Nice airport! No, seriously, LFMN - Nice ,France. Good old Blighty! Stansted EGSS just above the lower window frame. Touchdown at EGCN with OOM. I tried to take a screenshot on the approach - I'd disconnected the AP as soon as it established on the localiser, to get a bit of stick time - the sim went into windowed mode with a message behind it which said "unable to process screenshot" or something like that. No OOM dings, but airport not fully rendered as can be seen. The sim was still running ok enough to let me vacate the runway, but no point in screenshotting the rest. Oh well...
  8. Lufthansa will be retiring these big girls this year (I know, I know.. 777F's taking over and I like the T7, but still...) If I could have a civilian simpit with money next to no object, then it'd be an MD-11 flightdeck. The freighters have only had the new livery for a relatively short space of time... Just waiting to get the paperwork out of the way then we can push back and get the air packs going! It's quite warm in Dakar, and still summer in Germany.. Phew! ..as is usual, she usually has no problem achieving a positive rate of climb, even lugging about 60 tons! Going to head up across the north west corner of Africa, then up through Spain and France. The sun is setting on these "steely-eyed missile men" Passing by Gibraltar (below the fuselage). (NOTAM - total, absolute, bat**it random digression here: As a boy I had a cassette tape called Tunes of Glory, by the Southern Band of the RAF IIRC. My best friend's dad was ex RAF and they had a copy. As I'd recently got my first cassette tape recorder as a Christmas present, that tape was one of the first I ever bought. Among other tunes was the theme to 633 Squadron. That never gets old IMHO! Anyhow one of the tunes was "Night Flight to Gibraltar" and I began humming this when taking the screenshot LOL! Descending for a visual on RWY25R Frankfurt. 25R in sight through the murk.. That's a bit clearer! No shame in that touchdown! Taxiing in - 25R is close to the cargo aprons Get the kettle on, boys!
  9. It's been a while, but I do intend continuing to fly to the destinations on the 1969 London to Sydney Air Race in the type which won the race - the Flying Land Rover, the BN-2 Islander. I decided to use some external shots of the Islander to show off Flight1's version to better capture some of the aerial shots, even if the paintjob isn't the right one - I'm not pressurising the painter to come up with the goods, I'm not that kind of person! Taxiing out on a nice Austrian morning. Positive Rate! .. Gear U.... eh? Where's the gear handle? oops look where I'm going! Aviate, kick myself for lack of Navigating, think of story to Communicate to ATC Good day, Vienna! All 50 skeletons in the dustbin are busy fornicating - i.e. the noise level is as to be expected in the climb! This flight will be VFR all the way at 9000 feet. We'll make it over the top.. I think this is called Volujak in Bosnia Herzegovina. At about 2 o'clock that's Lake Ohrid and just in front of the windscreen centre pillar is Lake Prespa, North Macedonia. Here's Mount Olympus. (FSX NOTAM landclass over a reasonable mesh, way better than stock FSX) The Aegean Sea - not far to go now. LGAV ahead. We're going to be entering a left downwind for RWY3L. (FSX NOTAM this is far clearer than Google Maps - it appears that all the Greek airports are pixellated...) .. and the outside air temperature gauge is... right where you don't want it to be!! She's down safely with about 15 gallons left in each tank. IKEA probably make more aerodynamic furniture than the Islander! Just kidding, she was built to do a job and do it well. Get the kettle on! Cheers!
  10. At a suggestion by a fellow AVSIM member about not flying over Iran or Iraq if I could help it, (countries to the east of Iran would be far less friendly to a low flying, noisy, slow twin) I arrived at the torturous flightplan shadowing the Iranian border with Iraq to get us to Kuwait. From then on it would be a long range flight over water Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman & the Arabian Sea to get to Karachi.. Leaving Dyarbakir. LTCC Perhaps I should have asked for some fighter escort? Nope that'd create a bigger international incident (and I'd hate for Turkey to lose any of their F-4E Terminators - https://militarywatchmagazine.com/article/terminator-2020-why-the-f-4-phantom-is-still-turkey-s-fastest-highest-flying-and-most-heavily-armed-fighter-jet ) Settling in for an interesting cruise across some mountainous terrain. Things are beginning to tighten up.. you can also see the string of waypoints on the KLN90B which tracks the border.. I need to intervene with a bit of terrain avoidance..! Lake Urmia off to port. Later in the flight, Zeribar Lake (I know, I know, it's only a landclass with a mesh..) The Persian Gulf beckons.. We'll soon be on a right downwind approach to OKBK RWY33R - ATC originally wanted to give me a water runway.. Do they not know that Land Rovers, flying or otherwise are not watertight?? Almost a parallel landing, although the plane destined for 33L will be on the ramp way before I will! You can just see it (I hope) above the top left corner of the instrument coaming/glareshield. Nicely lined up.. Touchdown. Hope there's enough fumes in the tanks to allow the Lycomings to take me to parking. Still running.. Here we are. Brew time! Enjoy!
  11. Don't need much fuel for this trip, about 35k pounds to haul 50 tons. Taxiing out to RWY02 at EGCN. Feet wet off the coast of England. Descending towards Belgium Brussels airport just visible in the gap in the clouds above the window lever A bit hazy down here, on vectors for a visual to RWY5L RWY5L beckons. You can't quite see it, but there was another plane about to take off from 5R. Touchdown! View from the tower. Crossing 5R on the way to the cargo ramp. Nice evening. Right! Get the kettle on! Enjoy.
