July 6, 200322 yr Anyone increased their ram and had an increase in performance for the 737?I've got 512Mb ram and am getting the inevitable frame-rate death and hard disk activity.Am thinking of increasing to 1GbAlan
July 6, 200322 yr hi,Sure it will help.. after the patch though.... since something in the vc or cabin possibly has a memory problem (a leak) I have plenty of memory and the plane just keeps eating memory until I have like 400mb in the page file. I think even 1 gig of memory will get used up by this plane and youll still get swap file usage so I say go ahead and upgrade and after the patch (that hopefully fixes the framerate issue) the added memory will help tremendously. :-)Andrew
July 6, 200322 yr Andrew,Do you know something I don't? Sure we understand the patch will address the frame rate problem with the VC mode - there's been a whole topic originated by PMDG to get people to run a testcase and report on this - but... despite numerous requestsas far as I know...we have heard NOZZINGS! INGENTING! ZILCH! RIEN! NOWT!from PMDG... about the main memory problems (the 300M it takes just starting the plane in basic 2D mode; and the memory leak).I have asked several times in other places for some sort of response, even if it's GET LOST, but the silence from the team on this subject is worrying. Please, if anyone from PMDG is out there, tell us you know about this issue and either (a) we have to live with it (in which case I buy an extra 512); or (:( you're going to fix the problem, in which case I hold off buying. Thanks - Pete
July 6, 200322 yr hi,I havent read anything from pmdg but 300mb and another 300mb in the swap file is a bit worrying. If its not a memory leak or something then its a first in fs because this is the first time Ive had a low memory problem with this much memory. Nevertheless I still think this is an awesome aircraft. I am confident though that their working on something. :-) (they have been known for excellent customer service) Andrew
July 7, 200322 yr I'm in the same boat as you Pete - problems with the "2D only" version of the -600 and -700 aircraft, and a little worried about the lack of response to this problem. Everyone seems confident that the problem lies in the VC/cabin, but like you, my problems start from the moment I load the 2D models.Anyone out there from PMDG - please acknowledge that this will be looked at ??Many thanksJonathan
July 7, 200322 yr Before you add more RAM, make sure that you request a new key, wouldn't want to find out that after adding RAM you can't use the plane! :-)Regards,Bjorn
July 7, 200322 yr There is no need to request a new key before adding RAM. I just added 512 Mb to my computer and everything works perfectly. I e-mailed Lefteris before the upgrade and he assured that a new key won't be necessary when adding some more RAM.Best Regards,Christian
July 7, 200322 yr Same here. I only have 256 MB RAM on my Pentium 1600 MHz machine and don't dare think about the VC, which I'm not too keen on anyway since I quite like my two monitor set-up.What happens in my case is, starting PMDG737 take about five minutes, literally! And when I shut down, Windows tells me I don't have enough virtual memory, which was set to the recommended 382 MB.I have now increased both the minimum and maximum amount of virtual memory, but the PMDG is still as slow as ever to load and FPS are in the less than 10 region. Adding 256 and at least 382 makes over 600 MB with the 2D cockpit alone! There must be something wrong here?Leo Bakker
July 7, 200322 yr Commercial Member Leo-256MB is the bare minimum... I'd recommend increasing to at least 512MB of RAM (memory is so cheap nowadays, you can't go wrong with it! ;-) ) Lefteris Kalamaras - Founder www.flightsimlabs.com
July 7, 200322 yr But Your 737NG is the only Addon Plane that uses so much memory on my computer.Once You got more than 500 MB usage in the task-manager displayed the computer starts to use the HD extensively which is I think one of the main reasons for frame-rate issues. With addons like 767pic or Dreamfleet 737 I stay at or below 400MB and can even operate addons like fsbuild2.0 and AITM without major HD operations and framerate probs.regardsMischaSpecs AMD 1700, 512MB,GeforceGTS
July 7, 200322 yr Moderator Pete,I entirely agree with you about the lack of a response regarding the huge amount of memory this aircraft and panel are consuming. I'm not really sure why there has been no official reply and the answer is NOT to chuck more memory at the problem.I respect PMDG and the pressure they're under but plenty of other questions have been answered with the noteable exception of this one. This leads me to believe that they don't know what is causing the problem. Please PMDG, prove me wrong and give us some sort of reply.I did consider waiting until the patch had been issued before bringing this problem us again but I fear that unless it's resolved lots of people could be put off from buying what is an otherwise excellent offering.Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). July 8, 200322 yr The answer to the original quesion is now: yes, and yes.SWMBO approved my buying an extra 512, which has taken my ram from 512 to 1024.The 737TNG still takes a while to initialise the panel... but I get a consistently good frame rate throughout a long flight. Very similar fps to those I'd expect from such a complex plane and panel.I think I just spent six times as much money on the memory needed to be able to fly the damn thing as on the damn thing itself!- PetePS It hand-flies wonderfully, but I seem to be rudderless. A 15kt cross-wind landing with no rudder control was - erm - 'interesting'!
July 8, 200322 yr Hi all,Just to add - I have VERY LONG load times with this plane with the 2D panel and the VC. I have the same VC probs as everyone else, but it takes forever to load even the 2D and slows the PC RIGHT down. With other addons (PIC/PSS/DF ETC) I can run the sim, my simcharts etc etc, with the PMDG I have big problems as the whole PC slows to a crawl. I would appreicate a response on this from PMDG also, as yes, I can use the plane, but find it hard to have any fun whilst doing so - it takes a good 25 mins to get the pc ready (I fly vatsim) as it takes 10 times as long to get all the programs running with the slower pc.I have an ok spec pc.AMD 2400XP+512mb RAM128mb Ti4200 Graphics Cardand the other bits to go with it.I really don't expect to find problems like this, in a product that costs so much, on a relatively good PC. I will not spend more money upgrading the PC to fit the plane - I have spent enough already on a plane that I feel still needs a bit of work before I will be happy that the money was well spent, and not a waste. It's got good potential, yes, but is it reaching it? no.Ian Bowden
