65%N1 descent!!?

Featured Replies

yeap!aproaching 10000ft to land in kphx the FMC lit "more drag" so I engaged the spoilers in FLdetent position, I was cruising at 310Kt for a target of 240Kt. When the autopilot stabilized the plane slightly above 10000 to reduce speed, the N1 increased more, even when IAS was still at 290!!Isn't it suposed to go to idle thrust?Ps: In another flight I've tried a V/S descend in speed mode and got always non idle (for me idle is until about 30% N1) thrust...Any lead about what was wrong?Thank'sJos

V/S does not command the throttles other than by trying to match what you have in the MCP speed window - use LVL CHG or VNAV if you want an idle descent.Ryan

That was exactly what I did ;)I've only used V/S COUPLED with speed mode (240Kt) to see if the throtles were being properly commanded...Neither in full A/P mode nor semi-manual mode I've managed to have an Idle throtle descent, unless high negative V/S (-4500ft/min) was provided....In Vnav I couldn't perform an idle descent as I've said....Thank'sJos

"Ps: In another flight I've tried a V/S descend in speed mode and got always non idle (for me idle is until about 30% N1) thrust..."Just for info, Jos

Ian,The panel inhibits the joystick/throttle when the autopilot and autothrottle are engaged though...Ryan

"The panel inhibits the joystick/throttle when the autopilot and autothrottle are engaged though..."Ah... Thanks, Ryan. Now that you mention it, I do recall reading that somewhere before (So much to digest, so little time ;-) ).Cheers.Ian.

That could explain why some days ago after disengage the autopilot the joystick was dead. Sometimes (when I remember) I inhibit the joystick myself during automated flight so maybe the PMDG didn't liked that.Anyway it was one time only so it could be a SW glitch.Jos

Gents,The AP and AT systems will disconnect respective axes upon engagement of an active mode (e.g. VS pitch mode will disengage your elevator axis, HDG SEL your aileron and ruddeer axes etc). As Ian explained most control hardware inject have a considerable amount of noise into the system(s).When no mode is active then the AP and AT will automatically reconnect. If this does not happen please check your setup (USB users especially) by reference to FS sub-menu (calibrate joystick). That does not mean that the joystick will require calibration but USB wake-up (been there, done that a million times). Also as Ian explained idle N2 (hence N1) will vary according to TAT (i.e. outside air temperature AND speed), altitude etc. At tflight idle the plane will descend at 280 KIAS at 2000+. I anyone has fly with fly with unreliable airspeed tables check the figures ! In fact not just descent but climb, cruise, pitch, holds, flaps everything...Then check the speed-brakes.Regards,Vangelis====================================== E. M.
