According to airlines the cmd A is used by the Capt. while the B is for the F/O. Also under abnormal conditons either one maybe selected if the other has falied.A and B are both used in the event of a AutoLand.

Same for the 744.CMD L > Capt.CMD C > Cruise, both.CMD R > F/OBruno Francescoli.

And also Autopilot A can't work if Hyd Sys A failed...and vice versa with AP B and Hyd Sys B...
