Quick question about the 747

Featured Replies

Hey allI have a very quick question. I was woundering what the difference is between a 747-400 and a 747-400D.Thanks in advance,Jared Hylander

"747-400The 747-400 is the latest model of the 747, and also the only series still in production. It added winglets, an all-new glass cockpit which dispensed with the need for a flight engineer, tail fuel tanks, revised engines, an all-new interior, and newer in-flight entertainment to the basic design of the -300 series. It first entered service in 1989 with Northwest Airlines. The -400 is available in combi (747-400M) and freighter (747-400F) variants. The Japanese domestic variant, the 747-400D, is the highest-capacity passenger aircraft in the world, capable of carrying 568 passengers. The 747-400ER is 400's extended range version: it also comes in an all-freight version, the 747-400ERF.Plans to develop a new model, the 747-400XQLR, which stood for Extra Quiet Long-Range, were shelved." http://www.airliners.net/info/stats.main?id=100 Nice little tibits hereBest Wishes,[h4]Randy J. Nice info :) thanks. The XQLR has not been shlved, the 500 and 600 have been. from the page you linked: "Various growth 747 models have been studied. The 747-500X and -600X models were dropped in January 1997. Boeing is currently proposing the 747-400XQLR (Quiet Longer Range) to 747-size customers which will offer more range, more quiet, and more features."Luca

The 747 Advanced seems to be number two on Boeings to-do list after the 7E7, to get boeing back in the race with Airbus A380. So even after more than 30 years, the future of the 747 may still look bright. :)Cheers,Ian Udingahttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/800driver.jpg

Randy,Thanks for the info, I think I also read some where that the 747-400D does not have winglets. Can anybody confirm this or am I wrong?Edit, I just found this on airliners.nethttp://www.airliners.net/open.file/373276/L/Thanks,Jared Hylander

from the link given by Randy: "Apart from the basic passenger 747-400 model, a number of variants have been offered including the winglet-less 747-400 Domestic optimised for Japanese short haul domestic sectors, the 747-400M Combi passenger/freight model, and the 747-400F Freighter (which combines the 747-200F's fuselage with the -400's wing)."Luca

http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=122355just wondering if that is a 3rd FMC i see on the main pedistal between the radios and if it is, is PMDG including it in the 744?david

"just wondering if that is a 3rd FMC i see on the main pedistal between the radios"The Center "MCDU" usually has nothing to do with the FMC. Functions include ACARS, ACMS (Aircraft Condition Monitoring System), CMC (Central Maintenance Computer), SATCOM (Satellite Communication) and ALTN NAV RADIO (Center ILS tuning if both FMC computers fail).Sorry, don't know whether or not there will be one in PMDG's 744.Cheers.Ian R>

That is a definite...the 747-400D does NOT have wingletsYou can check it on Janes or BoeingRob
