September 8, 200421 yr I have just purchased the 737 NG 600/700 and am still having great fun exploring the various functions. However,I am having trouble with ILS Approaches. It doesn't matter what airport I approach the aircraft system keeps wanting to land me way to the left of the selected runway. With the ND in App mode the runway indicator is off to the right but the systems make no attempt to correct the approach. I've tried everything that I know and frustartion is setting in so now it's time to get help. Thanks in anticipation.Andrew Wall
September 8, 200421 yr Did you make sure you loaded the ILS freq NAV1 and NAV2? The FMC does not automatically tune the ILS freq for you. George Morris

September 9, 200421 yr Thank you both for your prompt replies.Attached is a screenshot showing an approach to Rwy 32 (110.9/324)at EGNM (Leeds Bradford Airport in the UK). Both Nav radios are set to the ILS frequency of 110.9.I have attempted several appproaches in different parts of the world and the result is always the same - the aircraft always wants to land to the left of the selected runway.Looking forward to receiving your help.Best WishesAndrew Wall
September 9, 200421 yr Andrew,In the pic I see that LOC is not engaged. The ILS deviation indicator correctly indicates that you're offset to the left. For LOC to engage, you need to cross the runway extension line with an angle. In this case you'd just need (if not too close) to fly rightwards somewhat to get LOC engage when the AC is within parameters.cheersanthonyAnthony MertonPrecision Manuals Developmenthttp://www.precisionmanuals.com
September 9, 200421 yr Anthony,It's my understanding that App mode arms AFDS to capture and track both the localizer and glideslope. Glideslope is always captured and tracks correctly. The localizer appears to be captured but it is always tracked well to the left of the runway.I have lined everything up flying manually but as soon as App mode is selected the aircraft moves off to the left almost as if, for some reason, the localizer beam had been shifted to the left. This happens all over the world not just at EGNM.Best wishes,Andrew
September 9, 200421 yr I have had the same problem with one of the original releases the only thing that cured the problem was to do a removal using the removal tool and then re-install. It took me two times. Also check and make sure you are using the most current NAVDATA from www.navdata.at ________________________________________________________________________________ Jeremy 9800X3D OC'd -30 +200MHZ | 64GB CL30 RAM | RTX 5080 | Windows 11 23H2| Bravo Throttle | Alpha Yoke | CH Pedals | Logitech Radio Panel | SmoothTrack | AAO
September 9, 200421 yr Jeremy,I have removed and reloaded twice but in view of what you say I,ll try it again! Yes I do have the latest NAVDATA installed.Andrew
September 9, 200421 yr I'm not sure if APP is tied to both localizer and glideslope, but, just for grins, why don't you try them separately? I.e. Come at the ILS at an angle, hit LOC to capture/track it. Then, once lined up correctly on the localizer, hit APP to grab the glideslope. Let us know if your problem is fixed.
September 9, 200421 yr The localizer appears to be>captured Not in the screenshot you posted! VOR/LOC is white and at the bottom while it should be green at the top! Do you ever get it green and at the top? If not, it's not captured.I remember reading somewhere that just pressing APP doesn't always work, so you might as others have suggested indeed try to use LOC first and when VOR/LOC is REALLY captured press APP.
September 9, 200421 yr No, just because you push APP does not mean it will capture anything. if you are coming in at an angle you will need to cross the localizer (intercept) or if you are coming straight in set the heading to the final approach course..Best Wishes,[h4]Randy J. September 9, 200421 yr Attached is new screenshot showing localiser captured. However the aircraft is still off to the left and staying there. Andrew Wall
September 9, 200421 yr One suggestion: Try a different airport - the one you have may be bugged (that's happened to me before).Hint: Try Denver (KDEN) r/w 35L, freq 108.50, I know for a fact it works with my PMDG... Approach from about 20 miles out at 9000ft. The intercept course is 020 from the west or 320 from the east.Make sure that you tune both radios to 108.50 and that you have the APP mode engaged well before you cross the localizer beam.Hope this helps.
September 10, 200421 yr Commercial Member Andrew,I think the problem is related to the fact that when you press LOC or APP you expect the mode to automatically activate and thus the system immediately turn the aircraft at some "capture" angle to the localiser/radial. This is what the default MSFS autopilot does and usually turns the aircraft at +/-30 degrees to the LOC course. This is neither correct nor realistic. In reality the LOC/APP will never go from "armed" to "active" unless either (from the Boeing manual...)(a) The aircraft is approaching target course at a "sufficient rate". "...The capture point is variable and depends on intercept angle and closure rate".(:( "Localizer capture occurs not later than 1/2 dot deviation. Course capture is indicated when VOR/LOC annunciation changes from armed to engaged...." Note that the APP light will extinguish (meaning that this mode once active can no longer be deselected by re-pressing the button). In other words the LOC/APP system is what is called a "final state controller". It will never setup itself an "anticipation" course.Try the following : use HDG SEL and drive your aircraft at some angle to the LOC (say 20-50 degrees ). Press/Arm VOR/LOC or APP...The system is good enough to perform capture even at 90 degrees to the approach course and at almost any speed without even overshooting or overshooting just once. This is the mark of a well designed system by the way just as its real world counterpart.Best,Vangelis Vaos===================================== Precision Manuals Development Group www.precisionmanuals.com=====================================PS. September 10, 200421 yr Vangelis,Many thanks for your response.I normally intercept a localizer by approaching it at an angle of between 30 and 35 degrees. I do not expect LOC and APP to automatically activate as you suggest.Earlier I completed a localizer interception at London Heathrow Rwy 09L and the attached screenshots show the result. I purposely did not select APP only LOC and I approached at an angle of about 45 degrees. The end result is that after the aircraft has intercepted, turned and established on the localizer, it is off to the left of the runway centreline. This is the problem.I have to say that the performance of the aircraft when capturing the localizer and glidslope is exemplary and everything appears to be fine. It's just that once established it tracks way to the left of the runway. It's probably worth noting that none of the other aircraft in my FS fleet exhibit this phenomenon. Thanks again for your advice and patience.Andrew Wall
