Landing the 767PIC

Featured Replies

Allright.. What the HECK am I doing wrong ?Every time, and I mean EVERY time I come in for landing with the 767PIC, the undercarriage breaks down.. I'll repeat myself.. it happens E V E R Y time I come in for landing.. Doesn't matter where, when or whatever..The undercarriage breaks down like they were made of cardboard boxes..Like this flight I just had.. The smooothest spproach/"landing" I've seen in my time as an active simmer.. Had a final approach speed of just over 165kts, flaps set to 25, spoilers armed and the approach was so smooth.. I touched down, and the second after, the wheels on my right side broke down.. I have absolutely NO problems WHAT so ever landing other planes.. Be it the DF737, the standard B744, dc9's, B777's WHATEVER...This is really starting to annoy me.. What am I doing wrong..I appreciate all replies..Thanks in advance,Morten Bruun, Norway

On the top of my head, I assume your weight is a little too high?Try the following:Perform an autoland with a grossweight of around 290.000 lbs, using the FMS calculated Vref speeds and a flap setting of 30

>Had a final approach speed of just over 165kts, This speed sounds too much. Your weight also may be a problem (in case you really need this speed). You "typical" approach speed should be 135-145. Make sure you dig deeper into this forum and find some common speed/flap deployment schedule for a 767.Michael J.

Thanks for the replies guys..I don't think I'm too heavy, when I'm stuck with nearly 8000lbs of fuel when on approach.. And, about the speed.. The approach speed on the 737 is between 135-138.. and, that bird is quite a few lbs lighter.. I disengage the A/P when app. 2nm from the rwy threshold, and when I'm some 200ft from the rwy, I go idle on the engines, just to glide in.. rising the nose slightly so have the bird easily and smoothly touch down.. Doesn't matter.. The cardboard boxes break down...Offcourse, when I was supposed to get the snap the pic on the replay.. The gear went back in (sometimes happens to m$f$).. But I'll do a pic next time..-Morten-

It could be something in your realism settings also .Try diasable the crash realism and reset the flight sitiuation box. Also your speed is high, I usually have a vref between 130 and 135kts at the init ref page for flaps 30. Your flaps should be at 30 Per 767 ops manual. I know the fmc shows a vref for flaps 25 but it is usually not landed at flaps 25, try flaps 30 and watch your weight. The 737 is a different story its normal landing is flaps 30 although it has flaps 40 , flaps 40 is only used at short runways.

Quite a few RED FLAGS in your reply !>I don't think I'm too heavy, when I'm stuck with nearly >8000lbs of fuel when on approach.. Do you really know what your total weight is ?????>>And, about the speed.. The approach speed on the 737 is >between 135-138.. and, that bird is quite a few lbs Ooops ... wrong assumption. Forget about your 737 experience. Find out what speeds the 767 needs. If you fly with the Pegasus style PFD you will see what the speed are.>and when I'm some 200ft from the rwy, I go idle on the >engines, just to glide in.. Ooops ... way to high to go idle on the engines (I assume 200ft is the radio altitude ?). Remember that every jet aircraft must be flown all the way to the runway. Morten, it does sound too me like you did not complete your homework about how to fly this bird. I don't care abou other products and how you manage to land them. I must have done close to 200+ landings in the PIC - maybe broke the gear during my first 5 attempts.Michael J.

As you're coming in on your descent, open up the FMC, and:Press INIT REFPress APPROACHPress the FLAPS 30 setting on the left to place it in the scratchpadPress LSK4L to enter it into the computer.Add 5 knots to the speed shown as VREFTHAT is the speed you want to enter into the MCP.

Of course, he can get the VREF from the FMC. Good point.Michael J.

Just a small follow up..."And, about the speed.. The approach speed on the 737 is between 135-138.. and, that bird is quite a few lbs lighter.. "The approach speed is not proportional to aircraft type nor weight. An A340 has typical approach speeds of 140 kts, and that plane is a tiny bit heavier than your typical B737...On the other hand, the MD-11, a heavy but not the heaviest, has very high approach speeds. It really depends on the aerodynamics. So don't think that because your 767 is bigger, the approach speeds must be higher...

> Anything below 300 fpm is acceptable, Opps! I always aim for 200fpm but sometimes I hit 500fpm and I assume that's acceptable as a hard landing? :)

"A good landing is the one you can walk away from, and if they can use the aircraft again, then it's a great landing!"I read this somewhere...George Dorkofikis

Try to get that nose up a little more. say 2 to 4 pitch up as the voice calls out 'Ten' and hold it there with vertical speed at -30 or so. Good to see you got it down in one piece though :)
