December 6, 200223 yr Randy,From my perspective, I really couldn't care less if the Landing View didn't look like the PIC main panel. Why should it ?? The PIC main panel is a great overview panel, and although it's a compromise to get it all in, it works for SOME phases of flight better than for others. However, is it suitable for visual approaches, and/or even instrument approaches ? Yes and no. The visibility from the "cockpit" in the traditional PIC-panel view is very limited, and although you can get a good look at the rwy, once configured right, it isn't exactly the best possible view, and it is FAR away from being close to reality, as we all have seen from Capt. Jake's and BBall's excellent pictures to demonstrate this. This said, I'm 100% FOR the types of landing views that you and Phil put together before this "PIC-style" view, which will never get installed on my PIC767. The view outside from Phil's and your previous view is OUTSTANDING, and now that Capt. BBall confirmed the gauges he was using were the ASI, ALT, and ADI, I really don't see a need for us simmers to see it ALL during landing. The views done by yourself and Phil have these gauges in their place (yours has a couple more, which I don't mind, it's great to have them both), and are really enjoyable to fly with.My opinion would be: continue developing the previous-type of views with Phil to get the landing-lights right. There ain't that much to develop in them though, other than the lights... But, as there will always be the ones, who prefer the unrealistic SIM-view, I guess you should serve them as well. We all like to benefit from someone else's talent :).Best regards,Tero PPL(A)
December 6, 200223 yr Author Well said Tero. I guess I am one who would fall under "prefer the unrealistic SIM-view". The fact is that we cannot EVER have a real panel prespective for a 767 aircraft. We all know this so we deal with what we have. We might come close to a landing panel but this would mean no gauges at all and we can't have that can we? As to Phil's panel, if you look at it you can picture yourself almost standing up and looking downward. Theres no other way to take a picture like that without LOOKING DOWNWARD whereas a real landing "view" would be looking STRAIGHT OUT. This is not to pick on Phil's panel {its great} but this has more to do with personal choise. As it stands right now there is just no way to have these vfr panels with lights and weather effects . Let me explain. The only way it works is to have the panels on a "foward_view". Now, this sounds simple enough right? So we add our panel to a forward view and start up the game and find out that theres something wrong here. Whats that? Its this, When the good'ol PIC team made this wonderful panel they made TWO active panels on the main view. Theres the UPPER PANEL and the MAIN PANEL. Now whats this has to do with our problem? Well for one the UPPER {the post and upper switches} has the OUTSIDE WORLD VIEW within its own window. If you hit SHIFT 1 in game you will remove this upper panel and see what I am talking about. Without it you have a view of the outside world that you CANNOT CHANGE. Some might say hey, what about Lee's panel? Dosen't it have all this lights and stuff? Well yes it does BUT as you can see you have no way to view down at all without hitting shift this and that etc, you cannot just change over with settings already for you except maybe for {zoom}. I can put my panel on a forward window just like Lee's and you can have all that but its to much to deal with when you are trying to land. Plus if you set the view down when landing, switching back will reset your view to this default view. Sorry all I need to vent . So as it stands mine will have to remain on a other than forward view for the ease of use. Thanks for your time, Randy Randy J Smith
December 6, 200223 yr Randy,Hi again! My time is not that valuable that I couldn't have a discussion about PICs landing views (evil grin).Regarding the perspective in Phil's landing view.If you take the IRL pilot's perspective and back off a few centimeters, you'll get Phil's view.My initial reaction was just like yours: it's looking downward from up high. However, it is not so, the limited FS outside view creates an illusion. If you compare Phil's landing view with a photo BBall took a while ago on the ground, you'll see the horizon exactly in the correct position with respect to the window, glareshield, posts and the ground. The only difference is that the real photograph (ie. the real "Mk1. eyeball view" :)) is able to capture a wider area ABOVE the horizon line, whereas the FS has its obvious limitations (due to the screen not being a human eye). In a nutshell this means that the P.Geddes landing view is as right as it will ever be in a 2D simulation. Even Capt. BBall said that it is "as real as it gets". And if the feeling of actually being in the cockpit can be created to this extent, I will use it, regardless of if it has landing lights or not, if it resembles the original PIC view or not.Your old-style landing view with the VSI and the stuff is ALSO very very good. I use the two together all the time. Especially visual approaches I tend to fly with Phil's view, and instrument approaches with yours. These views and the PW sounds are probably the best PIC-user addons there have ever been, and I truly am grateful for creating and sharing them. The landing-lights issue is a tricky one, and as it seems, there is no solution for it. But it's okay, just gotta live with it :).best regards,Tero PPL(A)
December 6, 200223 yr Thanks for the comments... we are all in it for you guys! By the way, I'll be coming out with a small update for my sounds very shortly. I was aiming to perfect the sound levels, and also edited the reverse sounds. Be on the lookout! Here's that pic teropa was talking about...http://cs-people.bu.edu/pgeddes/viewright.jpgIt's all about choices, and you get plenty in this community!Sincerely,Phil Geddes
December 7, 200223 yr Author >Hi Randy, >>Could you please send me your panel... >Would like to check it out and hope that I'll be tending >less to over-rotate as I have been doing due to the >perspective in Phil's panel. Hey Jaaky, You can now download this file on the Avsim File Library under FS 2002 Panels. Look for the "fix" version dated 12/7Best Wishes, Randy Randy J Smith
