Could open source be a possible future for 767PIC?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,I got this idea earlier today and I would like to share it with you too. I realised that if we could make Wilco publish 767PIC's gauges in open source the future freeware developements for this fantastic product could make it even more realistic that it already is. Open source would give us endless list of possibilities to customize 767PIC even furher. What about making a 757 version of it's FMC? What about including missing overhead elements and adding more features to the already best FMC for MSFS?I'm sure that there are talented enough programmers and enough knowledge in the PIC community to add new features and options and to continue the development of the product. This would only require that Wilco would publish the sources for the product. I'm sure that it might sound pretty odd for you at first but think about the possibilities it would open for us.Open sources would also give us the possibility to make 767PIC compatible with FS2004 when the time comes for that. Weather radar, TCAS, terrain diplay on ND and for example to lacks that BBall explained in his 767PIC review are all things that we could develope if we would only get the sources from Wilco. I myself have been dreaming of a metric altitude support found from Finnair's 757s. :-)So what do you think about this idea? Even the VFR landing view developments have showed us how the community can develope PIC even futher. Also some large software producers such as ID which turned Quake to open source have let the users continue the development. And since Wilco has stopped making more copies of PIC and they wouldn't even have to publish bitmaps, planes and other stuff included in the package with the sources what do they have to loose? Could we perharps form a somekind of request for Wilco about this? And finally, happy holidays for every one!MikaelHelsinki, Finland

http://mikael.svly.net/mikael.gif

fisd.fsnordic.net]
[/TABLE

Well, it sounds good, but then some very sleazy people would distribute the gauges around the web, and soon it wouldn't be worth to even buy PIC anymore, you could just download it for free.Just my two cents

hasn't that allready happened?i recall some messages on this forum in the past about these piracy issues...

Mikael, I really hate the expression; but, you

I think this is a great idea however the main problem I see is that this would give away the "secrets" in the PIC autopilot code etc, I doubt the team wants to just give out the method they used to create what is STILL the best FS autopilot in history....Ryan

>>PIC will sadly fade away.<

I'll add my two pence here also and say that I will NOT use FS2004 if they have VC cockpit only! The newest combat FS sucks BIG TIME and if FS2004 goes that way of developing the can keep it.Best Wishes,Randy J. [email protected]" A little learning is a dangerous thing"

randy, let's first wait and see how our Scarebus pulls through ;)Cheers

One Option is to release the source code to a team of people. And they could develop new features for PIC; kind of what F4UT is doing for Falcon 4. This would not make PIC freeware, but still we could get new features and the PIC team can focus on their next projects.
