February 10, 200323 yr I just recently tried to fly the Kennedy 9 Departure procedure via runway 31L and the Breezy Climb. It calls for a left turn direct CRI east of CRI-039 and then outbound on CRI-223. I was just wondering how a real 767 pilot would handle this and maybe I could get some tips on how to do it. Do I forget about the autopilot and the FMC and just fly it completely by hand?I set my Nav 1 to CRI, and I used my RMI to indicate which way to turn to go directly to the VOR. After takeoff, I immediately turn left, which already contradicts the FD bars. Not a big deal. After reaching CRI, what do I do? There is no VOR/LOC function, just LOC.I have to autopilot off. Turning it on prevents me from manually turning. It either wants to hold the current heading or turn back to the runway heading if I leave the AP on. However, I have to watch my altitude not to blow past the 5000 restriction on this DP.How does one handle takeoffs in this bird? I use N1 mode under TO thrust to takeoff using flaps 5. I try to follow the FD bars (i usually shoot right over them for some reason), and maintain v2+15. I usually blow right by that also. Do i switch to climb thrust after retracting the gear? Lots of questions, would appreciate some help. It gets very chaotic to follow everything that's going on after takeoff.
February 10, 200323 yr As far as real world flying goes, when flying a climb out of JFK (or LGA for that matter), the procedure is pre-programmed into the FMC. You simply select the climb you need in the FMC and the lateral flightpath that the plane should fly from the departure end of the runway to the path of the climb is displayed on the ND. As for doing this in the FS world, depending on the climb I'm flying I usually go to the FMC's LEGS page and insert CRI (or OGY depending on the climb) and then a VOR/radial/distance wpt. So after takeoff the airplane will turn left towards CRI or OGY, then continue turning left to join the radial inputted by me. Let's say I need to fly the Breezy Point Climb, as you described in your post. Simply input CRI on the LEGS page, then CRI233/20, or whatever DME you want. Now the plane will fly the climb as published (assuming you've got LNAV engaged). CheersRyan Hoffman
February 10, 200323 yr Thanks for the info. Are you certain that a real-life FMC would have the Kennedy 9 departure programmed in? I didn't think DP's of this variety would be included in the computer. If this is really so, why is it missing from the PIC?As for the other question, perhaps someone could help me with a real-life takeoff and climb procedure and how to follow the right airspeeds and flap retraction in concert with or without the autopilot. Thanks.
February 10, 200323 yr It has to be programmed in or downloaded off a site into the SID folder of PIC... I believe though that having every single SID and STAR for the world in the folder at any given time can crash FS when opening the SIDs on the FMC inside FS. Obviously this is not the case in the real world as the computer that runs the FMC in the real aircraft, runs only the FMC, wheras your computer is running the entire aircraft, the scenery outside, windows behind it, internet connections etc etc etc... February 10, 200323 yr Having all your SIDS/STARS is one directory slows down your computer. Use a utility as SID/STAR copier to manage your files. Do a search in this forum and you'll find a link.Kind regards,Stephan Haas
February 10, 200323 yr Thanks Ryan for that explanation. I have been trying to tackle many of these departure procedures and for that matter STAR procedures at various airports. You have helped me cleard a few things up.Thanks Andrew Andrew
February 10, 200323 yr Yes, thanks VERY much for your detailed explanation. I flew the departure using the FMC method you described on the bottom. But I suspect these types of procedures are usually flown manually. Perhaps without the autopilot even? I would be very curious to hear what your dad says about it. Please get back to us on that! Also ask him how he usually transitions from takeoff roll to LNAV/VNAV (when the different AP modes are usually selected and how he maintains an initial climb attitude and speed). Thanks.
February 11, 200323 yr Go to the ARTCC New York Vatsim web site. They have a d/l on there that you cannot get from the Navdata site that has the Kennedy 9 departure with all the different climbs that you can put into the sids folder for the PIC. Works like a charm. However, hand flying this departure is fun as hell!! Eric
