July 15, 200322 yr I spent all afternoon doing scenery for Tern Island. The pic data I have does not recognise Tern Island, so the information is Long/Lat.ROUTE: PHKO AMERY2.TYPHO V20 HNL V15 CANON 23N66 //// SNACK //// 29SOK 3MIL20 UJIXO OKEZO PMDY/0258NOTAM: TERN ISLAND ADDON SCENERY --- ILS 24 id IBRW 111.50 OBS 240 GS 3DEG RWY24 3000' MAJOR CAUTION 900' RADIO TOWERS ON S/W CORNER OF ISLAND. SCENERY AND FLIGHT PLANS AVAILABLE FROM http://www.czeg.org/flightplans.htmYOU NEED THE SCENERY TO LAND ON THE ISLAND. IF YOU DO NOT GET THE SCENERY, THE ISLAND WILL DESTROY YOUR LANDING GEAR AND YOU WILL BE STRANDED, UN-ABLE TO TAKEOFF, THEN THE LOCAL NATIVES WILL COME AND SIZE YOU UP FOR A SNACK. MMMMMMMMMMM SNACK!See you in Kona friday night.(have to go load up on suds now)
July 15, 200322 yr ahhh, why friday???? ;) i leave for France(flying camp) that day....well, can't have it all i guess. You guys have a nice one. But i'll be tryin that approach sooner or later ;)Cheers
July 16, 200322 yr And while some are flying around the virtual south pacific, I will be trying to keep awake on night shift.
July 16, 200322 yr I did some testing and found out that Tern Island will be good only for a touch-n-go. The 767 will not turn on the runway with out going off. If you attempt to go on the land surrounding the runway, the coral gets you and the gear breaks off. T&G's are the word for the flight. Sorry you can't make it Mark.
July 16, 200322 yr T&G for sure as I don't see where you could park more than 2 767s on that piece of rock :)Will try to be there :)Smalco
July 16, 200322 yr Hi Bill,3 hours is a little long for me, but I may catch you up towards the end of the flight, have to see how the night goes.Rob.
July 16, 200322 yr Hi BillAccount for domain czeg.org has been suspendedThat's where the link took me FYI :-)Someone forget to pay the bill or did Shuttleworth have something to do with this?Rob.
July 16, 200322 yr Flying a 767 into Tern Island!!! This is the site of the old U. S. Coast Guard Loran navigation transmittng Station infamously known as "French Frigate Shoals". It (and Midway Atoll) are in the north Pacific by the way. Tern Island is essentially a small atoll which was modified by dredging and fill by the Navy during World War II, which now resembles a sand aircraft carrier deck. We (the USCG) used to fly Hercs into Tern to resupply the station and now we would only go in for urgent search and rescue, the runway has pretty much gone to coral and sand, and if I remember right wasn't particularly long to start with. At least we took the 700' loran tower down when we left, you won't have that to worry about! All that is left on Tern Island now is a few USF&WS bird watchers, lots of birds (major bird strike threat in the spring) and the largest concentration in Hawaii of the endangered Hawaiian monk seal.Midway of course has the old Navy runways, which are long and wide. When the Navy pulled out a few years back, the Fish and Wildlife service took over operation of the airport. That is not a "core competency" of theirs and it has been problematic. Which worries Boeing since it is an ETOPS alternate for their twin wide bodies and I believe they subsidize it.Hey I'd try the flight with you if I wasn't going to be out of town, and will certainly download the scenery. Good luck with the approach into Tern, I'd use max autobrake! And don't try and get off too heavy!regards from Honolulu....
July 16, 200322 yr Great feedback Chris, this is very interesting stuff and it sounds like you could be a wealth of information for this part of the world.Bill,Since it appears that we will be stretching "as real as it gets" quite a bit even doing a touch and go there, why dont we stretch it a bit further and do a full stop then slew off the runway and hold in slew mode till takeoff time? We could wait till time to move into position before activating RTE2, starting engines, and cycling the F/D.
July 16, 200322 yr Now that is a great idea Mike! Slew off the active until your turn to T/O. I like it.Great history Chris, The scenery still has the towers and they have been ahem, modified a bit LOLThe website is up again. It was an internal error.
July 17, 200322 yr Have a great flight guys, I'll be out of town or I'd make it with you. See you in the virtual skies sometime down the road...aloha,

July 17, 200322 yr I have updated the scenery file so we can park and watch the incoming 67's land and depart. The Corona is at the little hut on the infield. :0)Get the new scenery at the 767pic website. same file name, just overwrite.http://www.czeg.org/terntarmack.jpg
July 17, 200322 yr What time (Z) are you planning on starting this trek? It's probably in the flight plan, but I'm too lazy to dig it out.Lee Hetherington (KBED)
July 17, 200322 yr OHHH Ya, right! How long did you say that runway was? Going to be interesting trying to get airborne with enough fuel to get back to Hawaii and still be able to bank right enough to miss the hazard you stuck there. Should make for some excitement alright.Mike
