Did You Know? Air Canada was the first International carrier and first airline in Canada to take delivery of the B767 Air Canada

Did you know that a couple fools at YUL didn't know how to convert metric to/from imperial units, so they loaded up ACA's first 762 to enter service with less than 1/2 the fuel it needed for the flight to Edmonton and it ended up gliding into Gimli? Yeah, I know everyone knows that but its still a helluva story, aint it?Ryan

..and glider 767, fin 604, was back in service less than 2 weeks later...and is still in service today.Great post Ed.Rob.

Good pilot skills!

As luck would have it, the Captain was also an expert glider pilot in his spare time...the RAT and pilot skills saved the day.

For anyone interested, you can find a full account of the incident in Stanley Stewart's excellent book, EMERGENCY: Crisis On The Flightdeck, published by Airlife.Frank

... In this case, I'd rather fly an airline whose name I cannot pronounce, that one that uses the name of its country and it's almost bankrupt and about to disappear all together. Also, Rob, you keep pointing out that fin 604 was back in service 2 weeks later, but fail to mention how much luck; besides the skill of the (glider) pilot and co-pilot familiar with Gimli, it took to bring the 767 down safely. Because of that luck and the hand of God, you should be grateful and be more understanding to others disgrace. I am still upset because of your insensitive comment on the TACA accident. I have Canadian friends, and they always seem to be sensitive and knowledgable about the rest-of-the-world. Although, I forget that they are not French-Canadian.Enrique

I apologise Enrique, I did not mean to offend anyone. I can see how my comments may have been inferred as insensitive.Sometimes my sense of humour gets me in to trouble.A virtual olive branch is extended to you and the folks at TACA.Rob.

Rob,Apology accepted. I know that we can get carried away with our comments sometimes, and the fact that you have kindly apologized to anybody that may have been offended by your statement on the TACA accident video link, shows the good quality of your character. And you are right. I read the story a while back on Reader's Digest, and was truly amazed by the airmanship of Air Canada 767 crew. The safety record of the airline speaks for itself. I sincerely wish that ACA overcomes all its financial woes pretty soon. It would be a great historical tragedy if we let such a great airline go under.Let's hope for the best.Enrique.

Group hug, group hug, group hug.It takes a big man to apologize, and a bigger man to accept the apology. Nice.Course, it takes a monster of a man to clean and jerk a 767.;)DS CVA3339 / UKD149System: Attlon 900 McW Hamster/Gerbilized Quantum Accessible 55Gig Iodized-Encrusted Four-poster with Mega-brill Farzenhuuven http://vatsim.pilotmedia.fi/statusindicato...tor=OD1&a=a.jpg

we don't use 'monster of a man' type of cleaning, we preferr nice female cleaning crews here on the continent ;) :-p

Enrique,You wrote:I am still upset because of your insensitive comment on the TACA accident.Upset about what? I don't see any comments Rob made about TACA as being insensitive. Or did I miss something. As far as running their airliner out of fuel, well anything can happen in aviation and it does. These guys were so lucky it's unbelievable, what a story!I still don't think Rob owes anyone an apoloigy.............ED

Would it be a fair assesment to say that except for the Lauda thrust reverser incident, there has never been a mechanically-caused fatal crash of either the 757 or 767? (Obviously 9/11, the AAL 757 in Cali, the blocked static port 757 crashes, and the hijacked 767 in Africa weren't the plane's fault...)Ryan
