June 16, 200322 yr And somehow, I found the Ti4400 to have more solid textures, faster frame rates, and crisper text than the 9800 Pro - while costing only 1/2 as much.Especially, with the 9800 Pro, I noticed that the onscreen text (the ATC popup window) and SHIFT-Z red letter info at the top left corner were faint and there were many jagged edges around letters. The same display Ti4400 was extremely sharp and solid. Moreover, the 9800 Pro seemed to make my screen jump on all applications the whole imagine would "shiver."Any thoughts?
June 16, 200322 yr Sounds like you got some serious problems. 99.9999999999% of the ppl would say the 9800 looks better than a Ti4x00, myself included.Sounds like the 9800 didn't like your hardware is my guess.
June 16, 200322 yr Sounds like you didn't set up the 9800 correctly. The fuzzy text is caused by anisotropic filtering, and I got that with my GF4, but I do no get it on my 9700 even with 16x aniso enabled. IRC the GF4 only went up to 4x.The default settings on ATI's cat drivers are way to conservative for the Radeon 9700+. Go ahead and crank in the 6x FSAA and 16x aniso, it can handle it.>And somehow, I found the Ti4400 to have more solid textures,>faster frame rates, and crisper text than the 9800 Pro - while>costing only 1/2 as much.>>Especially, with the 9800 Pro, I noticed that the onscreen>text (the ATC popup window) and SHIFT-Z red letter info at the>top left corner were faint and there were many jagged edges>around letters. June 16, 200322 yr >The fuzzy text is caused by anisotropic filteringI get this with my 9700, and I also don't notice much difference compared to the old GF2 when it comes to blurry textures - I still get a "fair" (I'd rather call it "unfair" :-() amount of them.Martin767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing
June 16, 200322 yr Martin; if you're seeing blurred textures, switch to 16xAF Performance Anisio and I bet they'll disappear. Let me know?
June 16, 200322 yr Switched to Performance and having my fingers crossed. (Lots to do right now so I might not get a chance to check it out in a few days.)Martin767 fetishistIt's a lot like life and that's what's appealing
June 17, 200322 yr I switched from the 4600 to the 9800Pro two days ago and there is no comparison. The 9800 Pro eats the Ti4600. June 17, 200322 yr >I switched from the 4600 to the 9800Pro two days ago and>there is no comparison. The 9800 Pro eats the Ti4600. Better not let your computer around mine, I wouldn't want my Ti4600 eaten ;-)
June 17, 200322 yr My 9700 Pro also eats the Ti4600. And, it's priced pretty darn good right now. I've read that ATI is phasing out the 9700 Pro cards for Profit reasons. Oh well, guess we'll have the R420 cards later this year. I just may have to upgrade when they come out. More good money that'll be not in my pocket anymore.
June 17, 200322 yr I just got a 9700 Pro and its amazing, all sliders to the right with 8X AF. I have 3 gig 1028 ram or so, P4. I get around 29 FPS. I can get up to 50 with default scenery and a/c. I love the quality of the picture too much better. Everything is just percise. At first I gradually increased the settings and saw no difference in FPS but a lot in quality I was amazed. Go and get a new ATI card and you won't be sorry. Make sure you have the correct drivers, and unistalled all the Nvidia [email protected]
June 18, 200322 yr I upgraded from a Geforce 4 Ti 4600 to an ATI 9800 Pro and it's a little slower than the Ti4600 when both don't use FSAA and AF in FS2002. However my 9800 Pro at 6x FSAA 16x AF doubled the frame rate over my Ti 4600 at 4x FSAA 8x AF when sitting at Meigs Field with customized AI traffic @ 100%. Some areas like LAX with the AI traffic I get much less than double the frame rate over my Ti 4600, maybe like 20% faster, maybe because it's more CPU limited in large airports with AI traffic. The only thing that I'm concerned with my 9800 Pro in FS2002 is that the edges of textures on the aircraft seem to still be jagged even with 6x FSAA even though the edges of the aircraft look smooth. On the Ti 4600 the edges of textures looked smooth with 4x FSAA. Does the ATI 9800 Pro antialise the whole object or just the edges of objects?
June 20, 200322 yr No, it antialiases the object and textures, provided the driver is correctly installed (try the Catalyst 3.4 driver).I used to have the same problem, and the plane in the picture was particularly bad, but now the only jagged edges you see are due to jpeg compression.Cheers,Gosta.http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg http://forums.avsim.com/user_files/17944.jpg
June 21, 200322 yr Here's a screenshot using 6x FSAA @ 1024x768. Notice the jaggies on the textures of the tail. What's up with that?
June 23, 200322 yr Hi there,I don't know, really :). It could be two things, either your driver isn't installed correctly, or it's an actual texture problem with the aircraft. Open the texture in imagetool and have a look at it - some of them are very small, so they'll get magnified in the sim, which can lead to jaggies. In this case, there's nothing you can do about it, except ask the designer to change the texture sizes for the aircraft.Cheers,Gosta.http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg
