Problems simulating fog

Featured Replies

First of all, let me say that overall I love this product, especially the weather planning feature.I was trying to use a custom METAR to simulate fog with 1/2 mi visibility. On the ground everything looked great, but then I used the slew mode to raise the aircraft above the fog layer. As soon as I got above the layer, I could see all the way to the ground as if the fog was only a slight haze. (My FSUIPC settings are as described in the manual, but it doesn't seem as if the reduced visibility option is working.) Do you have any idea why I can see the ground throught the fog and how to correct it? Thanks.Bill Huntsman

Hi Bill,Two things to check.. first, make sure you have the statement FG in the METAR string. Also, make the temperature/dewpoint spread equal..i.e. 10/10. This will then definitely trigger the fog detection and you should see a low simulated fog cloud layer as you climb above it. Hi Damian,Following your suggestion I used the following custom METARKEWR 180051Z 00000KT 3/4SM -FG 10/10 A3041(I also installed only default clouds for this test.) Over the next few minutes the visibility decreased and things looked great on the ground. However, when I start climbing the whiteout affect persists even above 6000 ft, where I gave up. I checked the MS advanced weather to see what was loaded. It showed no cloud layer and one visibility layer of 3/4 mi extending from the surface to 100,000 ft.Is there something wrong with the METAR string? I'd like to creat a low fog layer with clear skies above it at a reasonable altitude. Any ideas? Thanks.Bill Huntsman

Hi Bill, I see you are not using the graduated visibility option.. this should be enabled. Check the documentation for suggested FSUIPC settings for best results...Also, I am at a loss as to why no lower cloud layer is being created.. is anyone else able to duplicate this problem? I will run some more tests in the mean time..-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

Hi Damian.I do have the graduated visibility option checked. My FSUIPC visibility tab settings look just like those on p5 of the manual except that I use 6000 (instead of 9000) for the clear maximum visibility. This also sets the window at the lower right to 6000 instead of 9000. I have a slow computer and decreasing the maximum visibility helps a little with framerates.Bill

Hi Bill,Ok I tried this airport and it appears there IS a problem with the fog display here. I believe it has something to do with the altitude difference between the NOAA data and FS data. I am investigating more and will advise soon.. Thanks! Also try speeding up your visibility transitions, perhaps 10% every 1 second which might yield better results with graduated visibility.-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

Hi Damian,So just by dumb luck I chose to test the fog generation at an airport where there is an anomaly. Man, if must be frustrating to debug something like this! Thanks for the response and your continued efforts. A great program with great support.Bill

Hi,first of all: Damian you made a very great job with ActiveSky!I tried out the above Weather at EDDH - same Problem. In addition to that i have a Problem with other weather situations. Like in the screenshots, the actual weather here in EDDH has very low visibility and light snow. As you can see, there is no snow and above 9000ft i am able to see the ground. I think, this is not correct?!Another Problem is, that i am flying now about 2 days behind a couple of aircrafts (from Cessna up to B747) but i did not recognize any wake turbulence. I checked my settings twice and they are exact the same as in the manual. Does anybody else have problems with the wake turbulece?Grettings from Germany,Torben

Here is some additional information in case it helps in finding the source of the problem. Yesterday I reinstalled both this program and FSUIPC in case something was wrong with the installation. I set everything as in the manual and used only default clouds. I took off from ORD where it was overcast. The clouds looked great from below and while I was in them, but the moment I got above the overcast layer I could suddenly see all the way to the ground. I have reproduced this in several other locations as well. Hope this helps.Bill Huntsman

Bill do you use RC3 or ADVDISP?There was a similar problem like this associated with ADVDISP and the new one solved it.. -Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

Hi Damian,I use both. I'll download the latest Advdisplay and see if that changes anything. I'll let you know if it works, though it may be tomorrow before I can test it.Bill

Damian - My curiosity was too great so I got the latest Advdisplay and installed it. (I overwrote the previous version before checking which one it was.) I then went to KMSP which reported overcast at 1,500 ft. Things worked great and when I climbed above the overcast all I could see was the overcast layer below, not the ground. I haven't tested anywhere else, but it certainly worked this time. Thanks!Do you think this is related to the fog problem also or is that a different issue? Bill

 • Commercial Member

Bill,It's a different issue related to the altitude of the FS airport vs altitude of the latest NOAA METAR station elevation, or perhaps flying from an airport at an elevation higher than the closest METAR reporting station (cause variations in elevation processing). If you notice this at certain airports let me know which ones and I can address individually... thanks! I will also work on a more forgiving approach to this..-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

Just to let you know: I encounter similar visibilty effects as Bill and Torben mentioned. I fly a lot from/to Holland and Germany and see this situation very often (a lot of fog last few days!) Could the ground altitude also be a problem here? Some airfields even are below sea level. I'm using the NL2000 scenery for The Netherlands (as many other do). This scenery uses realistic runway/airfield altitudes.Regards,Hakkie
