April 19, 200422 yr Greetings!Coupla days ago I bought and downloaded ActiveSky for FS2004. Being a notorious dimwit when it comes to computers, I took great care to meticulously follow all installation instructions to the very letter, resulting in a beautifully installed AS. So far, so good. Had a cup of coffee, sat relaxingly down in my home-made little cockpit, and fired up FS9 *without* ActiveSky, because I hadn't figured out all the settings and intricacies yet: I just wanted to make a little flight with my favorite Lancaster bomber before returning to ActiveSky's manual and settings. Sadly the sim went sloooow. I turned on the framerate thingummajiggalaboo, and saw 14 to 16 fps where before installing ActiveSky I had around 30. Closed the sim, started up again, tried various locations and aircraft, same result: framerate sort of halved compared with BIAS ("Before Installing Active Sky").So I uninstalled ActiveSky, and fired my sim up again. Smooth as a baby's cheeks, framerates around 30. So what I'm confronted with, is a newly acquired but right now UNinstalled ActiveSky that at the very moment it is installed, manages to cut my framerates in half *even when it is not switched on*! That can't be right, can it? It's not fair (grin)!Would anybody have anything sensible to say on the matter? Be, stay, live and matter well!Jaap Verduijn.
April 19, 200422 yr Jaap,Sorry you are having trouble. Some things to look at:Are you using Active Radar? Are the cloud conditions the same in each of your tests?Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004proudsupporter.jpg
April 19, 200422 yr Hi Jim!I haven't used/tested ActiveSky yet, nor pottered about with the settings. After I found out that it halved my framerates just by being installed WITHOUT being started up or pottered with, I immediately uninstalled it. Life's complicated enough as it is, without worrying my old head about these things. Now I must admit that I seem to have some sort of "digital evil eye" (grin)! I only have to LOOK at any computer and it starts producing smoke, downloads get corrupted if I wink at the screen only once during the process, fully automated installers NEVER produce the promised screens as long as I keep looking at them, and Windows only recognizes new hardware when I trick it into believing that it sees something different than I do. So I'm not too surprised. Most additions I bought via download got themselves uninstalled after days or weeks at the most, on account of doing either the oddest things or nothing at all (VoiceBuddy being a recent representative of the latter category, and ActiveSky of the former), and the majority of the additions I obtained on CD-ROM's finished up being uninstalled on my own computer, and given to neighboring flightsimmers in order to have better luck on their machines. Which invariably turns out to be the case. But I must say that ActiveSky surprises even ME (grin)! The simple INSTALLING of a program being sufficient to cut my framerates in half even when that program is not started up and/or used, is a new addition to my rich collection of odd experiences. Anyway, right now ActiveSky is in an uninstalled stage, some sort of digital limbo between heaven and hell. I don't think I'm going to install it again before I have at least SOME idea of what it initially did to my rig or, as a distinct possibility, what it did in order to activate my binary evil eye (wide and wicked grin)!I'll just have to sit on my hands though, because it's very tempting to install it again, and watch the most incredible events unfold!Be well!Jaap Verduijn.
April 19, 200422 yr I always remove the ActiveRadar.dll from the Modules directory as it drains FPS even when it isn't being used, and I have no interest in it anyway.Don't give up on AS. I don't fly without it.
April 21, 200422 yr Greetings Edwin!I'm still hesitating to re-install ActiveSky. I don't think I will re-install/use the program before I have at least SOME idea of what its installation initially did to my computer. I have a hearty dislike of software that, by the solitary fact of its installation (i.e. WITHOUT even being started, used or activated), buggers up other applications to the extend of halving their framerates. I think I can live without ActiveSky, and without the 30 euros I paid for it. Be well!Jaap Verduijn.
April 21, 200422 yr OK JaapI suggested you book into this forum and seek help from Jim or Damian.I think you should install the program, give the support team some feedback comparing a new installation without it running and with it running and allow them to see the various config files that Active Sky creates and uses. They will ask for various things as they hone in on what could be the source of your problem. If you can get over the initial hump you may be pleasently surprised. The bloke (or woman) who coined the saying 'nothing ventured nothing gained' didn't do so just because he liked the sound of it!Damian (and Jim) is rightly proud of his achievements with Active Sky and I can tell you from experience that he (they) go to great lengths to solve the mysteries software frequently conjures up.A little investment of your time, I'm sure, will reap benefits.RegardsAndy b Andy Brockbank
April 22, 200422 yr Greetings Andy and friendly advisors! Before plunging again into the exciting depths of digital intricacies, I'd simply like to have my initial issue addressed. (I've always wanted to use this pompous sentence: having an issue addressed, especially an initial one - grin!)What does the very INSTALLATION of ActiveSky do to a (my) computer in order to cut the framerates of FS9 in half? I mean: it got installed and then just SAT there on my hard disc, WITHOUT yet being used, activated, fired up, kicked into action, or turned on. It just laid there like a log, but its simple brooding presence scared FS9 into loosing some 50 percent of its speed. I was asked the question if I used ActiveRadar. No, I didn't: I didn't use ActiveSky or any of its sub-thingummies at all. It was installed, not used. So: why does an installed but at the moment not used copy of ActiveSky cut my FS framerates in half? What else might an installed but not (yet) used copy of ActiveSky sneakily do, like to other applications on my computer? What did I do wrong in order to produce such unexpected results? What strange and foreign Digital Deity have I angered, in order to be punished by him with an ActiveSky version that just sits there broodingly and slows down my rig? Oh, the intricacies of digital realms and depths (grin)!Be well!Jaap Verduijn.
April 22, 200422 yr Hi,Please give us your system details.JimActiveSky Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004proudsupporter.jpg
April 22, 200422 yr Moderator Greetings Jaap - BTW, I like your writing style. You Sir, complain with a flair! I am NOT involved with AS supporet in any way other than a very satisfied user but in reading your post(s) several things come to mind. You indicate that you seem to have the "evil eye" of software. I would hen put to you that the constants in your comments are two - you and your system. From posts on other forums I know you are not a total computer newbie so I must conclude that something in your system is amiss and doesn't show except in specific situations. Now, that long sentence didn't help you a bit but it felt good to me .Regarding your current problem - ANY application that puts a .dll file in the MODULES folder of FS9 will affect FS9 whether you run the software or not. All files with the extension of .dll that are located in the MODULES folder will be AUTOMATICALLY loaded by FS9 at startup. Whether you activate it or not is irrelevant, it is loaded and active in memory. That said, it would indicate that there is something else loaded in your memory that is conflicting, possibly sometrhing not even related to FS9.I don't know the inner workings of AS but if you have patience, I'm sure Jim and Damian will resolve your issue. However, I will go out on a limb and state that you will probably find that it is something OTHER than AS that is causing your problem.Hang in there, the end result is worth it AND if your problem gets resolved, the side effect may be that your "evil eye" get's tamed.VicVisit the Virtual Pilot's Centerwww.flightadventures.comhttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004proudsupporter.jpg RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
April 22, 200422 yr I don't know what version of FSUIPC you have installed with AS but for a quick try if you do not have anything else depending on it in the modules folder rename FSUIPC.dll to FSUIPC.dlh and the same with the active radar. If FS9 then speeds up for you, rename FSUIPC back and try FS9 again. Some early FSUIPCs had fps issues in the 3.x version so get the latest one, 3.21. Check out the users and advanced guides looking for some .ini editing that controls the frequency of reporting some of the parameters reported back to the apps using it including AS.Once this is solved, if FSUIPC is causing problems on its own, you should be able to advance. As posted elsewhere in this thread, remember modules are loaded and in the case of FSUIPC at least activated whether or not used by an app.
April 24, 200422 yr Alright guys, thanks! I'm kinda busy right now, but early May I'll have some free time and follow up your various advice. Thanks again for coming to my aid!Be well!Jaap Verduijn.
