ActiveSkywxRE and FSFlightMax and radar returns...

Recommended Posts

:-zhelp I've posted in other forums as well. Just looking for maximum exposure. I'm looking for people who have successfully integrated these software and are able to get radar returns.I have followed, to the best of my ability, the suggestions made by others using these 2 pieces of software. I have seen Tarmac's post at the FlightMax site. As of yet I cannot get redar returns when using ActiveSkywxRE. I believe there is going to be a new version of FlightMax next week that fully integtates the 2. However, until then, I would like to have the radar working. I get liberal returns when using just FS default rain, but as soon as I load wxRE, I lose returns. I have not moved my aircraft. And I have tried refreshing the weather in wxRE. I've tried different start sequences of the programs. I've tried many things. I think I may be missing a link between the programs somehow. Some people said to have FSFlightMax .ini point to the wxRE folder. I don't know how to do that either. Thanks in advance, Adam

Rather than manually trying to get the two working together, I suggest you wait a day or two for the release of the FSFlightMax update to reslove this. That's what I'm doing.RegardsRussell Jourdain (NZL007/ZK-RHJ)

Russell, You're probably right! No sense pulling out hair when I only have to wait a few days anyway. Thanks, Adam

OK. Willing to give it one more try!. Ed, I deleted previous FSMeteo entries in the .ini as per Tarmac's suggestion. Can you tell me what they were so I can put them back and then put this under them?:FSMeteoDirectory=C:Active SkyI usually do a back-up but it was late last night and I was falling asleep! Thanks, Adam

Even better, if you could post your .ini. Don't worry about the hotkey stuff, just the stuff before that. I'll need to know where in the sequence the FSMeteo stuff goes. Thanks again, Adam

Personally I don't mess with the FSFlightMax .ini file. I use the FSFlightMax Configuration Editor and specify the ActiveSky directory where you're supposed to put the FSMeteo path.

Thanks Ed. And thanks Brian. I haven't seen this configuration editor yet. Must have overlooked it in my reading.Adam

Hi Adam,The current FSFlightMax compatibility is a little confusing and is partly to due with the fact that the FSFlightMax update with full "ActiveSky Support" is not yet available. But I can assure you that if you follow the readme.txt included with wxRE that it does work (for most people anyways). If there is some kind of other problem I'd be happy to help you out.. check out the readme, give it a go then let me know if you are still missing echos! Also please check your radar tilt settings, make sure you can see the returns in FS2002 only before trying with wxRE to make sure your Flightmax is actually working for radar. Also make sure you refresh in wxRE after changing airports. You can check that the export is happening correctly (for the right area too) by looking at the wx-export.met file that is created after a refresh. Hi also make sure you are enabling the feature via FSFlightMax settings menu (see readme.txt) and make sure you do not have a "OFFLINE FILE SET" selected (so that it updates in ONLINE/live mode instead of OFFLINE). Hi Damain, I'm getting my money's worth, eh! ;) I want to run wxRE in offline mode due to the fact that I have a dial-up connection that frankly sucks. I live in Northern Manitoba and the connection is such that using online mode is not, at the present time, a viable option. It is very common to lose your connection or have lengthy periods of inactivity.A fellow named ED is helping me now. I'll keep plugging away at it. It's good learning for me anyway. If all else fails, I'll just wait 'til the new version of FMax is released.I'm really enjoying ActivSkywxRE. It really has made quite a difference though I have only scratched the surface of it. Thanks.Adam

Adam, sorry I did mean you had to run in ONLINE mode but there is existing FSFlightmax functionality for ONLINE or OFFLINE mode in the other product... we are using the ONLINE functionality here in this case regardless of the mode we use in wxRE.-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

Hi, I'm making headway! I now have the activesky metar files showing up in FMax under the "manage FSMeteo" window. However, when I choose the correct file and press enter nothing shows up on radar. If I go back to the manage FSMeteo window, it has reverted to "use none". None of the three options in the menu will take...yet!I'll get this!!!Thanks, Adam

Adam,You want "USE NONE" selected there. Make sure the [other add on] option is also "enabled". It's right next to the menu item to get into this screen you just posted. If you post me your FSFlightmax.ini file I can verify this is set correctly. Adam your settings should actually be combined there, not one section at the top and one at the bottom. Not sure if that will do any harm but just to be safe...Hope it is working for you now! Please move this topic over to the ActiveSky forum for further discussion of this... Damain, I changed the Fmax.ini as suggested. I haven't put the FSMeteo lines together yet.It doesn't want to comply even with the new settings. It will allow me to keep a check mark next to FSMeteo in the FMAX menu, but it will not hold a check mark next to "manage FSMeteo". I'm guessing that means that function is inoperable at this time. I'm sure this will all be resolved when the new version of FMax is released next week.Is there a way to carry this over to the Active sky site? I don't know how to do this link thingy...unless you mean you just want me to make a new post outlining what's happened here. Thanks, "Do you ever sleep"? ;) I seem to recall this somewhere.Your help is greatly appreciated and I think you ought start ignoring my posts as you are likely extremely busy.

Hi Adam,The Manage item doesn't need to be checked. All should be working now that you have the Enabled check...Now just go somewhere rainy and refresh in wxRE, it should start showing within 5 minutes on FSFlightMax (give it time to load in the new file). Thanks! BTW Just start a new thread in ActiveSky Forum and we can continue it there.. thanks!-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

Abent: I got it to work on my setup. You don't have to use the FSFM manage feature. I also don't have the path identified in the .ini file. Mine says 0. What I do have is the FSFM option checked in Active Sky, and the path in Active Sky noted for the location of the offline files. Hope this helps. Kaydub

Abent: Right after I wrote this, I found out my weather returns were not accurate. I was flying in a shadow of clear weather, (about 20 nautical miles), and my radar showed large returns. I found that you do have to use the configuration editor and specify Flightmax to get it to work. Sorry if I led you astray. Keith

Hi Keith,No problem, I can easily be led astray ;) but I wasn't in this case. Some success has been actualized. With the help of Damian, Ed Van Knapp, and a few others I managed to get radar returns. The paths in both programs have to be C:Program FilesActiveSky wxRE as explained by Damian, Ed and John among others. It still wasn't quite working until Ed suggested that I go to world/weather in FS while the sim is running, naturally. The weather from ActiveSky is loaded and displayed on the FS weather screen. Then press "OK" and when you return to the sim, you will have radar returns. However, I discovered while flying tonight that as I climbed well out of the rain, the wx Radar was still showing returns. They eventually disappeared from the screen. I decided to descend back into the cloud/percip to see if I would get the returns. I did but I was flying in heavy rain for a couple minutes before the returns returned :( . It seems that it takes a while for the data to be loaded into FlightMax. I expected to see returns well before I hit percipitation. Anyway, I'm certainly not complaining, as it is good to have returns at all.Maybe this will be addressed in the upcoming release of FlightMax 1.4Hope this helps. And sorry for being so long-winded.Adam
