ASV Setup keeps executing when attempting to start ASV

Featured Replies

You are not the only person experiencing this. I am getting exactly the same symptoms. Except I was trying to open Privacy Guardian. I have been fighting this issue for some time but this is the first time ASV has tried to install as a result of my opening another program. I also reinstalled Windows XP last week to make sure there is no windows issue. I have unistalled and reinstalled ASV several times. I thought it was just me. I posted a request for help today.Hopefully we can figure this out.Best regards,Bill Worth

Steve,I just found the spyware program I am using deleted a file named"SPYW_VTBOUNCER.C". I found when that file is missing I get the symptoms you describe. I can run the repair function of ASV and the file appears in the spyware scan again. Hope this helps for you.Best,Bill Worth

HI Steve, I saw few of this before. Your problem is, the installation is checking for the MSI files? You need to install Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility package now like jim give you the links.http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...Ben-us%3B290301-Install the software.-Select ASV and Uninstall ASV only.-Then reinstall ASV.ThanksChris WillisHiFi Simulation Software Team Developerhttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_dev_team.jpg http://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_proud_supporter.jpg

Within a day or so after I install (or reinstall) ASV, I start getting the ASV Setup installer instead of ASV when attempting to run the executable. It tells me it is "gathering information", as though it is going to re-install or de-install itself. If I let it go, it ends up telling me it can't find a certain file, and tells me to instert the "Install Disk" where the file is located (???)The Setup program is also interfering with other software I have installed on my machine as well. Sometimes when I execute completely unrelated applications (such as SpywareBlaster), I instead get the ASV Setup window doing the same thing... "Gathering Information" - No SpywareBlaster.I have tried uninstalling the latest version of the MSInstaller, then reinstalling it and nothing helps. What's the deal? Am I the only person experiencing this?I've just recently done a completely clean install of Win XP Pro, have zero spyware or malware present on any of my hard drives and no viruses or trojans present. Thanks,Steve KasianSoyo KT400 Dragon Ultra Platinum EditionAMD XP-2600+ @ 2.08GHz512MB DDR RAM @ 333MHznVidia Ge-Force FX5600 Ultra 128MBHDDs:Maxtor 250GB 7200 8MB CacheMaxtor 250GB 7200 16MB CacheMaxtor 60GB 7200 8MB CacheMaxtor 40GB 7200 8MB Cache

Steve,If the suggested Mircosoft program doesn't help, consider this.I spent some time searching the forums and have discovered others have had similar issues. The problem goes back to AS2004. I don't think the problem is with Active Sky. It seems there are certain spyware programs that incorrectly identify a necessary file as spyware. It is listed as "Virtual Bouncer" or "VTBouncer" or "SPYW_VTBOUNCER.C" or some like variant. I know Trend Micro Spyware Scan is one of the programs that does this. I am confident the spyware label is incorrect because I ran two different spyware scans (AdAwareSE and Cosmi) in addition to the Trend scan. Neither of the other programs found a "VTBouncer" file. Only Trend did. If I delete the file through the Trend program, I have the problems you describe. When I run the repair function of ASV, the file appears in the Trend spyware scan again and, as long as I don't delete it, ASV works as it should. So, at least for now, the fix for me is to not use the Trend spyware scan. I suspect you might have a similar spyware scan issue where a necessary file is being incorrectly identified as spyware. If any ASV staff reads this, I would appreciate your comments.Hope this helps,Bill Worth

Bill,One thing to be carefull, they always give you notice "spy detected" may not be harmful and can make others program broken etc, not all things detected means that's are spyware, you can even delete a complete program which are not related to a spyware.Maybe Your program consider as spyware but, I never had these type before, I don't know why..I run spybot and microsoft spyware, never got these spyware type.http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=enhttp://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.htmlThanksChris WillisHiFi Simulation Software Team Developerhttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_dev_team.jpg http://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_proud_supporter.jpg

Thanks for all the help and input!! Sorry to have disappeared for so long... I went on vacation and just got back in.Chris Willis: Thank you for the info on the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. It worked; it enabled me to reinstall ASV properly. But the problem cropped up again within a couple days.I DO use Trend Micro PCCillin Antivirus, and it IS finding the "Bouncer" thingie on the spyware scan, which neither AdAware nor Spywareblaster find. And even though I delete it every time, it DOES continue to pop up on the scan later on, and I would venture to bet it is at the core of this problem, as Bill Worth so helpfully stated (great investigative work there!).So I am going to attempt another reinstall, stop using the Trend Micro PCCillin Spyware Scanner and see what happens. I will be surprised if this doesn't remedy the problem. I will follow up with a post in a week or two and let you know what I find. Thanks again for all the intelligent and helpful input here from all who took the time to respond. MUCHO APPRECIATADO!Happy simming, all...SK

Hi Steve,Yes, Trend Micro PCCillin Antivirus, find spyware which are not spyware and asv and some others will not works anymore, don't delete these spyware files.Just reinstall asv. I have just tested Trend Micro with their online spyware removal and the same thing happend to me, they detect false spyware which no others spyware software found and broke some software. To be safe with spyware wihtout broken software, I use these:I run spybot and microsoft spyware, never got these spyware type.http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=enhttp://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.htmlThanksChris WillisHiFi Simulation Software Team Developerhttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_dev_team.jpg http://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_proud_supporter.jpg

  • 2 weeks later...

Yep... That was the problem. I've not had any more occurances of this issue since I stopped using the Trend Micro Spyware Scanner weeks ago. Thanks again...Steve

This MUST have been what caused my copy of ASV to be corrupted then because I did run several spyware scans a few hours before starting this program, and it had the same "Configuring ...." message which never did anything. Problem is, is that I somehow cannot get the ASv update file to work now. Was supposed to be getting this fixed via one of the Hifi/ASV guys but havent heard anything. To that support person, please send me an email to e_tomlin@hotmailthanks,Eric
