Updraft (thermal?) encountered just before touchdown

Featured Replies

Hi,I have ASV enhanced and I had not experienced this "updraft" at all until Friday, during a real-weather flight using ASV5 forecasts when landing at Darwin airport in Australia. I noticed that it was actually a "windy" day but during the final approach, winds were not that noticeable at all.Just before touchdown, suddenly the plane lifted. I KNOW for sure it was NOT my lowering of the flaps to their final 30 position (using PMDG 744) as I had already lowered them before and adjusted my descent rate. So the plane did not just float but the rate of climb went to about 200-400 fpm.Has HiFi software seen any issues with sudden updrafts still occurring as I did not see any recent posts on this topic (not since June anyways).NOTE: I DON'T know the exact version of FSUIPC I'm using but it is NOT the latest but 1-2 versions before it (i.e. probably around 3.42 or something). If you need it, I'll let you know what it is.Regards,John Agbaba

I've had the same thing happen to me in the real world. Especially in the summer when temps reach the 100s and flying over a parking lot on final. So either, job well done simulating "pavement thermals", or there's a slight glitch. :-hah----------------------------------------------------------------John MorganReal World: KGEG, UND Aerospace Spokane Satillite, Private ASEL 141.2 hrs, 314 landings, 46 inst. apprs.Virtual: MSFS 2004"There is a feeling about an airport that no other piece of ground can have. Hi,In VAS we don't identify a parking lot but we do look at temps and other conditions along with random influences. It could have been a VAS event if it was > 100AGL... very possible. It also could have been a wind gust or wind transition with increasing headwind. I doubt it was a wake event, as there would have been a severe rolling motion as well...

The parking lot thermals was just a joke, I can't see anyone taking the time to program such a feature in.At the time I made the comment, I was just fishing around to see how stable the program appeared. So I found my self buying it. So far from the hour flight I did, I have to say, "Top notch!". I just wish your archive went as far back as March of 2004 so I could relive my 250nm solo X-C in MSFS. Next time I do a X-C, I'll have to run the archive and give you feedback on how well ASV matches the real-world conditions I encountered on the flight. ;) :-hah----------------------------------------------------------------John MorganReal World: KGEG, UND Aerospace Spokane Satillite, Private ASEL 141.2 hrs, 314 landings, 46 inst. apprs.Virtual: MSFS 2004"There is a feeling about an airport that no other piece of ground can have. Hi John,Actually we did try do get identification of terrain type (i.e. asphalt, concrete) into the VAS simulation, but the only real-time terrain data available is when the aircraft is on the ground, so that didn't work...Also, we do have archives for March 2004, albeit in the somewhat limited 4 cycles per day format (00, 06, 12, 18Z). Archives go all the way back to 12/04/2003 :)Welcome to ActiveSky!!!Best,

4 Cycles a day? Hi Jim,Well, did another landing in Tahiti yesterday but with very calm winds and no such updraft produced. Darwin had winds of at least 10 miles with gusts so I am guessing this was a realistic simulation of a sudden updraft which happened just before touchdown. But, this leads to another question: I have suppression ceiling set to have no changes near the ground (I believe it is 10,000 ft) but do updrafts of this type still get simulated even if there is a wind speed limit of 10 miles (set by user) and a suppression ceiling?John

Hi John,Yes the update suppression only prevents the wx update process from triggering.. all other effects such as VAS, wake, vis graduation, etc., are still "in effect"... :)Best,

Try turning the wake effects off.I had the same problem with sudden (deadly) downdraugts at 100 feet and occasionally a similar updraught.Since dissabling wake effects (pity) I have not had one.It does not necessarily need an aircraft close in front to cause it. On a couple of occasions a BAe146 landed 9 miles ahead, and I got sent into the ground in my heavy VC10 :-)What VAS are you running. I have found anything above 50% intensity can cause prolonged up/downdraughts. You trim furiously against them, and then they dissapear, and once again you go hurtling towards the ground. On another note, I encountered the mother of all thunderstorms over Nice (LFMN) the other evening. ASV takes my breath away at times!

Hi Jim,I can see from my flights this week in areas with very little wind (e.g. 4 NM at airport) that this problem is not an issue unless there are other conditions present like moderate winds (e.g. 15 NM). I haven't turned off the downdrafts feature as I actually "forgot" about it but I'll try to remember next week when I resume my flights. Thanks again for everyone's input.John
