December 2, 200520 yr Hi!Sorry, I abuse a little of this space to ask your opinion on this (After all you're DXT experts :) ): can I convert all FS9 scenery textures to DXT3? Maybe it could improve performance... "Society has become so fake that the truth actually bothers people".
December 2, 200520 yr Commercial Member Hi, Scenery are already compressed in DXT1, nothing can be much change. ThanksChris WillisHiFi Simulation Software Team Developerhttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_dev_team.jpg http://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_proud_supporter.jpg Kind RegardsChris Willis
December 3, 200520 yr I was curious about this as well, particularly when I narrowed down a video stutter problem to some airport DXT3 textures. So I did a bit of digging on the 'net to see what I could find.As I understand it, the DXT format provides for some lossy compression of bitmap graphics, like jpg does, but it can also handle Alpha channels which provide transparency.DXT1 uses 1 bit for Alpha channel information. However, DXT3 uses 4 bits. If I understand correctly, this means that DXT1 transparency is either on, or off. DXT3 transparency can be graduated (like a building window, you can see through it, but you can also see that it's there.)Because of this, DXT3 files are actually quite a bit larger than DXT1 files. So, if you do not need graduated transparency, you're better off with DXT1 files. For my video stutter problem, I took the DXT3 files that were causing it, converted them to DXT1, and the stutter was gone.Since ground textures do not need graduated transparency (or any transparency for that matter) I would guess that it would be best to leave them as DXT1....jim
December 5, 200520 yr DXT1 with alpha is required for photo tile textures to show water (set by the alpha), at least if you want float planes to be able to use the water.scott s..
